According to the owner's manual on the website, "VW 505 01" is the engine oil spec for a "1.5 l./81 kW TDI CR" variant of the Rapid. I guess all oils meeting or exceeding this spec should be fine.

Yup just google for whichever is your preferred brand of oil that complies with this VW spec. Shell Helix 5W30 seems to be ok. That's a diesel spec right so get any oil that's specifically formulated for diesel engines.

VW 505.01 compliant FS is what you should be looking at and the oils in India are
1. Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W40(Available only in Skoda/VW service centers, the one's in the market are not the 'Professional'grade)
2. Motul 8100 Xclean 5W40

I would suggest you get the oil changed from the authorized SVC after verifying the oild/grade they use.

Very sound advice. Just see that the viscosity index (higher) is the same or more than the specified value. The oil starts at the lowest value and then as the engine warms up the viscosity does not exceed the higher figure.

No, its available here. I saw it the last time I got oil for my car. I'm going to get some again soon so I'll check and get back.

What car is it? What is the odometer reading? Your driving style? Highway or city driving? weather conditions?

If 5w-30 is the required oil then in one word, no. The safest way is to follow the manual.

You can buy it on 99rpm still. Slightly more expensive than local though.

Check the owners' manual. Normally it will list two or three grades for different driving conditions or seasons. If it shows both, generally there will be no problem.

The manual for my 2009 Alto shows the preferred oil as 20W40, but also shows 5w30 or even 20w50 for different conditions. The standard oil for the latest K series Maruti engines is either 5w30 or 0w40 (synthetic). Maruti nowadays uses either of these two oils for all cars including the older ones, with no apparent ill effects. They don't stock 20W40 any more.

Maruti also suggests 0w-20 and 5w-30 for its cars. But using these oils will do more damage under severe and long city driving conditions or for cars with high mileage. Damage includes, small leaks, engine wear and tear, more sludge, less protection under stress and affects to general performance and may increase in case the oil is burnt leading to less pressure which is already low with a thinner oil. Positives of a thinner oil are usually a good cold start lubrication in winter and more Fuel Economy when it suits the car.

Again, thinner oils are measured to perform better in engines with very tight clearances in new cars. Old cars do not have these. I am personally using a 0w-20 in my Honda Jazz but would not use it in my Lancer which sees a thicker 5w-30 (HTHS of 3.5 or more)

A thick 5w-30/10w-30 (10w-30 can be thinner than 5w-30 in some brands) or a regular 5w-40/10w-40 are good regular options.

These are the usual recommendations in manuals which go up to 50 grade for nations like India.

Have to get the 4-Year/40,000 km service for my 2012 A-Star in Bangalore. Last time, the service center filled 0W20 engine oil, even though the service manual says 5W30 grade.

When I asked them, they said that Maruti now recommends 0W20 for the K10 engine, (which the A-Star) has. However, I have checked with the user manuals and it is only the new K10 engines (2014 onwards), where both 0W20 and 5W30 are recommended. I called up a couple of service centers and they say that 0W20 is recommended even for a 2012 K10 engine.

Now, the car has covered only 6,000 km in 4 years, and most driving is city driving in Bangalore. Should I buy a 5W30 from the market/amazon and tell the service center to fill that oil, or simply go with the MGO 0W20 recommendation.

Also, which service centers in North Bangalore (Yelahanaka, Yeshwantpur, RMV layout etc) would you recommend. Bimal on the Airport Road (Near Yelahanka) is the closest to me, but I am still pissed off the last time since they did some 'exhaust cleaning' and other unnecessary tasks and charged me extra. How much would a 4 year/40,000km service cost approximately?

You can go for a 0w-20 MGO. They also have 5w-30 MGO. 0W-20 will help winter start ups leading to less wear. The thinner grade will also benefit Fuel Efficiency. Your engine may become more noisy.

Make sure you change the oil after 5000-7000kms (servo MGO) and 10000-12000kms (shell mgo - rumoured to be hx8).
