Just because it says 'Synthetic technology' on the label, doesn't make the Castrol Magnatec inferior.
I don't use it anymore. But, I'll vouch for the 10W40 oil any-day.

Hey guys, I am planning to change to synthetic oil for my i10. In fact I had plans to do during my 2nd service when my car had done close to 10k but the service advisor advised against it. However I am more inclined to change it now and my car has done 14k. Could some one suggest good synthetic oil for Hyundai i10 Kappa?

I do not know how oils are compared and what tests are done, before calling one inferior/superior. What I meant is that when castrol prints 'synthetic technology' on the can, many people actually are mislead into thinking it is indeed synthetic oil.

I am not saying oil is good or bad, I am just saying its misleading. Thats all.
You vouch for the 10w40 and I have been using it for a long time (still using it for my corsa).
I have always used castrol oils in the UK for almost 10years (most recently Edge for my 20v Turbo coupe and Magnatec for my Veccy 2.2).

The first time, I saw a can of magnatec at a Halfords store, I honestly thought it was fully synthetic because it said 'synthetic technology' . It had no mention anywhere else about the oil being semi-synth or mineral etc, so I presumed it was Synthetic oil !

Not all of us are clever and smart sir, some of us do succumb to the misleading packaging and adverts !

I am not using it because of the adverts, just that I feel the car feels a bit smoother with this and I am weary of experimenting with other brands.

IMHO, whether it is labelled semi synthetic or mineral, Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 API SM is the best oil you can get at that price point. It is one of my favourites. But there's a caveat. Fakes exist so ensure you buy only from an authorised dealer.

hey guys i was using chevron dello gold for my optra magnum but chevron has closed shop in india so was looking for a replacement for chevron

OWS 15w40 is CI 4 rated for your information. ACEA E3

I have just completed the second service for my Alto today at MSM(more about that in the ownership thread soon). Even though it was not mandatory, I got the engine oil and filter changed. I took Helix HX5 with me, and told them to supply the oil filter. My doubt is as follows:

When the mechanic removed the old oil filter, some kind of protrusion about the size of index finger also came off from the base of the engine. I suppose this is the oil intake / mounting on which the oil filter is mounted. I saw the mechanic screwing this part back on to the engine base with his fingers but I don't remember seeing him tightening it with a wrench. Then he mounted the new oil filter and tightened it as far as possible with his fingers. And I clearly remember him tightening it with a wrench after this. Then the new oil was filled and the service was completed.

While waiting at the lounge for the delivery it occurred to me that I could not remember if he had tightened the part back to the engine with a wrench after tightening with his fingers. I went back inside and spoke to the mechanic and he said he had of course fully tightened it with a wrench. When I mentioned this later to the SA, he said the mechanic would have automatically done it by habit. And even if he did not, finally tightening the filter with a wrench will automatically tighten this part as well. He further said it will be an issue only if any leakage occurs from the filter, in which case it will have to be removed and re-mounted once again, and otherwise we can forget about it.

Gurus please tell me if he is correct, or should I really take the car in for making sure, just in case? I am planning a long highway drive on Sunday, hence the worry!

Gansan, if you doubt the job was done properly then by all means take it back.The SC needs to ensure you are satisfied and all your queries answered.

well,i tried reading this thread but slept:D 155 pages of pure theory.
i have a swift vxi 07 model.i wish to change to synthetic oil at my 4th service,i.e around 15,000kms. can someone please suggest me which oil should i go in for?

I raised this point before taking delivery, but the SA gave the reply I have quoted in my previous post. Is it normal for this piece to come off and then be screwed back? I have not seen this happen during the previous oil changes, hence the doubt.

That's the oil pick up at the oil filter location.
That's also where the oil filter is screwed onto.
So, if its loose, your filter wouldn't be tightly secured too and there's a high chance of oil leaking through the rubber O-ring/gasket on the filter.

By logic, you need to watch out for any leaks near the filter.
And do keep an eye on the oil pressure light on the instrument panel.

For peace of mind:
Take it to a MASS tomorrow.
Let the engine cool for 20-30 minutes.
Have them remove the oil filter, inspect, tighten and replace the oil filter. You wouldn't lose over 100 ml of engine oil in the process.

As Nitrous points out below, the inch or so long cylindrical protrusion is the Oil filter mounting thread.

Take the car back to your MASS and have the SC remove the filter and install it again. The tech needs to clean the filter gasket and smear it with clean oil before mounting it. The filter MUST be torqued properly generally 1/2 to 2/3rds of a turn from the finger tight position.

Once the job is done start the engine and preferably take the car for a short spin after which you can examine the filter mount area for any leaks. Keep a watch where you park the car for any drops of oil. You will lose a little oil in the process of removing and installing the filter, but use the extra HX5 engine oil you have left over to top it off. Do not overfill.

Believe it or not but I always check the filter and other areas in the engine bay for e.g. the brake oil reservoir cap, coolant reservoir cap once my car is back from the SC. These techs are always in a hurry to complete the job and sometimes they miss out on checking small things before giving it back to the customer.

PS - No, it is NOT normal for that filter mounting to come off when removing the filter.

Thanks guys! So there is no possibility of unfiltred oil circulating in the engine? The SA also told me to observe for leaks around the filter and if there is any, to bring the car back on Saturday (today being a holiday). I have checked under the car after parking it overnight, and there is no leakage. So I guess I will have to prevail upon him to re-install anyway.

If it is not normal for it to come off, how does it happen? Could it be sort of broken in any way? But then if it was, it can't be threaded back so easily! I am confused.

As for topping up with remaining oil, I have enough left for the next oil change and then some! Is it OK to use it after six months, if I keep the can tightly closed? The DOM is Sep'09.
