This is part III of the series where I intend to dyno my car before and after each modification. Here's a Link to my stock dyno run, as well as the free flow exhaust run. To know all about how dynos work, read through this thread.

• Honda rates the Civic @ 130 BHP from factory. Taking into account drive-train losses, my stock Civic did 117 BHP on her first visit to KS Motorsport's dyno. After getting a free flow exhaust, the 2nd dyno visit saw the car churning out 121.5 BHP.

• I've never thought of big K&Ns giving you more than 1 - 2 BHP, if at all. That's probably true for most performance intakes out there. The 69 series K&N Typhoon kit I purchased from Methods.co.in is specifically designed for the Civic. K&N claims that it adds 5.71 BHP. Baah, I said. It took about a month to import it, and have delivered to my office.

One regular work day afternoon, the box arrived :)

And the first thing you see, upon opening the box, is a dyno run chart:

The K&N intake I got for my Vtec was just that; an air filter! On the other hand, there is a lot more stuff packed into this "For Honda Civic only" package:

The massive filter:

Exceptionally high quality rubber hose:

The same afternoon, we scooted to KS Motorsports. Always see some interesting cars at his place. Here is a souped up Lexus:

Stock air-filter and box removed:

K&N installed in its place. Took about 30 minutes to complete the install. The packaging came with detailed install instructions, but really (small) lousy pictures:

Safely buckled up. She's becoming a regular visitor to this bay:

A video of the run:
YouTube - DYNO: Civic with Automech AND K&N Typhoon Intake

And the result : 125.5 BHP. We had a total of three runs. When the Civic was cold, she churned out 124.1 BHP. The final run recorded the day's best @ 126.7. For the sake of averaging, I'll stick with the middle one:

What's it like?

• The typhoon uses the stock air feeder pipe to bring outside (colder) air to the intake. Also, the heat shield should be blocking some amount of engine heat. I'm told that, as the speedometer climbs, so will the airflow be better.

• Above 3,000, the K&N makes its presence felt; the sound is to die for. However, it’s also loud and wont go down well with everyone. My folks found it especially annoying in the 3,000 - 4,000 rpm range (when it's the loudest). Below & above that rpm range, the Typhoon isn't that intrusive (though audible at all times).

• The car definitely feels a tad sprightlier. And the free flow & typhoon intake have made her extremely revv-happy. I'm satisfied with the basic mods thus far. She's nearly as much of a maniac as the OHC Vtec when redlining...a car that's fun to work hard on the open road.

• The K&N hasn't made as much of a difference to the low end throttle response as the free flow did. The performance exhaust brought a giant improvement to how the car behaves in traffic. No real difference at low speeds with this bolt-on mod.

Other Points:

• To the uninitiated : Don't get misled or expect even a 1 BHP gain with a stock replacement filter. Good plumbing & positioning with a short-ram / cold-Air-intake can get you a handful of horses though.

• The easy mods are over. Now what? Remap? Piggy back? Forced induction :D

GTO,

The voyage has well and truly started. And for amateurs/greenhorns like me here, it is a case of 'sometimes the journey is more important than the destination'.

We're all ears, and eyes.

Regards, rev up but drive safe:D

Man I wish you had told me, I wouldve loved to be therelol:.

Looks like K&Ns claims are reasonably accurate, which is good. The sound cant really be heard properly in the video, but im very surprised you find it the loudest at the 3-4krpm range. I would have though it would scream after the vtec kicks in all the way to the redline.

And I think this is a Short Ram Intake and not a CAI.

Congrats.

Congrats.

Resonance inside the intake manifold.

Absolutely. The car's great and I'm really happy with her. Want to take baby steps with each modification, considering how long I retain my cars.

Next time for sure. This was a last minute thingie.

Prominent resonance (as Pranav posted) which starts exactly at 3K and ends exactly at 4K.

Actually, the noise cuts out by 60% beyond 4,000 rpms. Still audible, but not as loud.

Thanks, corrected.

GTO,
Any idea if there is a dyno set up in New Delhi that you could direct me to. I had a CAI kit which is manufactured specifically for the Swift installed in my zxi by Cosworth in Pune and I want to check if there is indeed a difference in the power output on that account. The car now is in delhi and hence the request.

+1
Wish there was a dyno here in Delhi / NCR, so that I could also check on the real time gains with the turbo setup. :D

@GTO
So what is the cost per BHP that you spent till date ? So what on the agenda next ?!

Cheers

Unfortunate that there isn't one, and none in the pipeline either.

Unique way to look at it! Like 3,000 - 4,000 per BHP.

Nice to see real facts!

I presume the K&N is next to the yellow tube/plumbing?

Looks like a good CAI will help better. Would like to see what a Green Cotton setup (Wind/Storm) can do.

It definitely wont be better. Since that is a universal filter, but this K&N Typhoon is made only for the Civic and designed for it. And if a proper CAI could have been designed for this engine, or if a CAI would have provided significant gains im sure K&N would have probably come up with one.

Just my thoughts.

How about a pic of the complete engine bay with the k&N.You mentioned the filter is huge in size but i can't seem to make out how huge it actually is?

GTO, congrats on k & N, I have been using it from last one year and I just love the sound when I rev it high high and higher, truly amazing. I am still thinking of the FFE but have always been confused whether it is a value for money modification(:

Are you hunting for Koni's FSD, as I am thinking to go for it. is it possible to have a ride in your car so that I can see the differnce after the FFE. I am in and around Andheri West, let me know.

Cheers

If things go right there may be a dyno in Delhi = sooner than later IMHO :)

Ok that sounds about right. I am spending 4000 x "x" = 3L (including suspension)
So I think the numbers match up :D

Cheers

@GTO: I expect my 57i Kit from K&N very soon.
A couple of questions:
1. Is this a cold air intake? Did you manage to install it the way it's mentioned in the user manual? With the cold air hose et all?
2. How much did the 69 series Typhoon filter cost, shipped to India.
3. PRAY, why is the engine bay of your car so dirty??? ;-)

Will do.

No such thing as VFM with modifications. And we're only on stage one here.

Why 57i? Go for the 69 man.

Quote:

Its middle-of-the-way; sucks in outside air via a feeder pipe, but is still placed inside the engine bay. This is more suited to our (monsoon) driving conditions than the filters placed behind the front bumper.

Yup, though I'm not 100% happy. The air-feeder pipe, for instance, can be pushed out with a finger. Plan to add some fixes.

MRP is 17K, easily available for 13 - 14K (depending on dealer)

Can't help it, man. Way too dusty driving conditions and haven't been to the garage a single time since delivery. Will have it cleaned soon :)
