Re: Engine swap/Performance mods in Lancer

Some update after a long time

Big brake upgrade -

Parts needed -
  • 1994-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX (Turbo AWD) Dual Piston Calipers with brackets
  • 2000-2002 Mini Cooper S Brake rotors (94-99 Galant works but it is 114.3 x 4 PCD whereas this is 100 x 4)
  • Brake pads
  • 1994-1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 Brake Master Cylinder (Not necessary but highly recommended)

By using the above mentioned parts, you can have a very effective but cheap big brake upgrade which is bolt on. No modifications are required whatsoever.

I'll let the pics do the talking,

Installation took a couple of hours so you can imagine how easy it is.
As for the performance, well it is pretty evident. Right now I am bedding in the pads and also haven't got an opportunity to test them well but whatever little I drove last night was sufficient to hint at what they are capable of.

Infact a Civic almost rear ended me thanks to my generous braking which I have got used to since the earlier brakes were struggling to slow down the car, forget braking

Willl update after a thorough drive.

Since I carried the parts from US, it saved me a lot of shipping but for the curious ones, I ended up paying ~ 35k for Rotors+2 x Pad Sets+Calipers+Master Cylinder.

More later...

Hey amey,

awsome brake upgrade but also make sure you change your brake hoses you will recognizable difference in pedal feel and brake hoses are cheap.

Did the same in my Palio 1.6 now with a 1.8 heart in the stock brakes were not effective for the starters have just changed the brake hose with new Original Fiat ones and braking is very very effective now. Much better than before but could be little better which would be taken cared by new upgraded pads and rotors.

I was searching for steel braided hoses but unfortunately couldn't get hold of them.
As of now the hoses are fine and do not have blockages which would restrict the easy flow of brake fluid.

Since the system is freshly bled and has new brake fluid, everything is working just fine.

As and when I come across steel braided hoses, will get them replaced.

Working well for now.

Update : H&R Sport Springs installed day before yesterday,

Dear Amey,

sorry just realized the upgrade is just in the front, haven't you thought about rear disk conversion? (no doubt this configuration is the best option, but is definitely not the cheapest.

wouldn't it be easy and friendly on the pocket if you use a ANHC/Verna rear calipers and disks slotted and cross drilled like your fronts.

the parts would be more readily available and would have worked out below 10k for the whole setup.)

wondering about this since this is on my cards.

interested to know about the costs of the lowering springs, and do the bottom out on full load?

regards

pramod

Sorry for the late reply Pramod, I login pretty rarely these days. I am considering the Rear conversion. Wanted to do 1 thing at a time. The braking is fantastic now but I am sure the rear conversion too will help so might do it in the near future.
The conversion isn't as easy as just using calipers from another car and plonking it in, there has to be a bracket, the calipers should match the caliper and so on. I personally stick to bolt on kind of mods when it comes to suspension and braking, call me paranoid but I just don't feel comfortable doing a mod job in these 2 areas which involves body/chassis modification to adjust new mods.

The springs cost me 320$ and I carried them with me from the US. I seldom have passengers in the car most of the times, max a co passenger in the front but thats about it. I did a quick spirited drive with 3 of us in the car and atleast then it did not bottom out. When I driving alone or with front passenger, it never bottoms out.

Re: Engine swap/Performance mods in Lancer

Amey, why didn't you got cedia gearbox F5M42 ? Gear ratios are a bit closer for first four gears compared to F5M41. Can that be fitted in lancer easily?

Re: Engine swap/Performance mods in Lancer

My lancer diesel has vibrations through body and steering wheel, while in idle, but if i raise the pedal, the vibrations got reduced and normal. I had changed the mounts (indian make) , but still i had vibrations. the drivetrain and engine top mount looks center and okay, but the bottom mounts which is in stabiliser bar looks not centered, i had attached pictures, please let me know, what is wrong with it.

Dont underestimate that engine, it has a cast iron block and the weak link is pistons and connecting rods, which can be changed to forged ones and you can also do head conversion from SOHC to DOHC and just the head change can give you ~20whp (Theoritically) And then if needed you can turbocharge it, the block can handle high boost.

Not really if you search hard, you get Evo4/Evo 5 half cuts at decent prices. Already got a quote from a Malaysian scrap dealer who has both of these in stock.

4G92 MIVEC is a straight 4 not straight 6. Mine being a diesel lancer has CK8A chassis and I dont think it will be a bolt on like in the Petrol Lancer 1.5 one which has CK2A chassis code.Nothing is impossible but it isnt as easy you think it is either.costs can vary, you cant put a fixed price tag on it, importing part itself might cause cost variation.
Also AFAIK, this engine isnt made/sold anymore. It stopped in 2001 IIRC hence finding this engine wont be easy and lets assume you do find one, the condition of the engine is a big question mark. From whatever little I know, the 4G92 head is delicate so if that is damaged then whole project can go for a toss, its the head that is most important for the 4G92 IMHO.

The 4D68 SOHC diesel unit in my car was also offered as a turbocharged variant known as the 4D68T but I am not interested in doing that, already have enough Turbo Diesel cars.hehe

It can be done, I know someone who has done it and can arrange one for you if you want. If you are really keen, let me know, will let you know all the details.

The outlander has a 2.4L MIVEC which I think is the 4G69 MIVEC. Not sure about that but its too much of a trouble and too many modifications to fit that engine, so ruled out that option.

Nitrous Anna,
I am aware of that but finding one is a bit difficult I guess,no ? Finding 4G63T is easier in comparison and has far more potential than the 4G93T,dont you think ?

Aware of the FWD and AWD thing anna.looking into that already.

4G63T wont be a bolt on,atleast I dont think so,4G92 will be though. If you plan to put the 4G63T then I guess you need to fabricate new mounts.
It already has forged con rod from factory

Since I don't use this car anymore as I have a Swift for my daily use, I was contemplating doing an engine swap in it and do some performance mods.As it will be sparingly used, I was basically thinking of making it into a project car.
The basic idea is to have a fun car, I am neither craving for numbers nor am I going to take her to drags and all,not interested in all that.
This will be an occasional night drive/weekend drive car,not used daily.

I tried searching a lot on Google regarding the above mentioned engine and chassis but found nothing.
From whatever info I have been able to gather till now, it seems that the CK8A chassis took only the 4D68 engine so the possibility of a bolt on engine swap seems difficult. Therefore I guess I will need to fabricate new mounts to accommodate a different engine.

So assuming that I would have to make new mounts, I could go for,

1) 4G93 (1.8 INVEX)
2) 4G94 (Cedia)
3) 4G63T
4) 4G92 MIVEC ( Next to impossible to find ?)

While taking some underbody snaps for future reference, I found out that the Diesel Lancer in India came with F5M41 transmission if that helps.

Can upload pics if required.

Any kind of help is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Amey

Turbo diesel engine swap into a Lancer Diesel

Hi All
I have a lancer diesel with the 4D68 diesel engine and wanted to get a Turbo diesel version of it 4D68T that was sold in certain countries. Ive read that there are some folks that have swapped in the 4d68T.

Just wondering what the laws of the land are regarding engine swaps and if it can be registered on the R/C, insurance complications etc.
