Detachable Steering Wheel

Hi Guys,

I came across an Accent in my office complex which had detachable steering wheel installed. Now that was something real neat.

Anyone have any idea on where I can get this in Gurgaon / Delhi and how much it would cost. Also, would it void my warranty.

Thanks

Hi,

What you saw was probably a car with a detachable or quick release hub. Its available in Mumbai and should be available in most metros as well. Inquire at a good accessory shop and ask for quick release hub.

Is this for security from theft or just for the wow factor. Are you going to carry the steering wheel home and into office.

I would love to see a thief's face when he finds the steering wheel missing.

People are getting inspired by Mr. Bean!

I'm really curious what you would do with the steering wheel once you take it out? I can't imagine someone going shopping in a Mall with a steering wheel under his arm!

Though it is a neat security measure, but it could be pretty embarrassing to carry the steering wheel everywhere you go. It would be silly to hide it in the car itself. One more thing what if the prospective thief comes the second time round with his own steering wheel of the same make? Then what? Boy, am I optimistic or what?!

One thought would always linger at the back of my mind : What if it comes off over a high-speed run

Question : Is this just for anti-theft protection? If so, do each of these hubs have a unique key-like layout? If not, expect thieves to carry around a steering themselves when hunting for prey

Thanks guys. Believe me, even I was thinking of a thief who somehow with greatest difficulty broke into the car and then to get a shock of his life when he sees a knob sticking out.

I also thought of what GTO was referring to on what would happen if it suddenly came off while driving.

Well I dont think I would be putting it on, but was curious to know the price.

Would be nice to have a removable brake clutch and accelerator pedal too.
Im sure the thieves would be in for a shock.

I can figure the person walking around a mall with the remote lock hanging in one pocket and the steering wheel from the back pocket

a. Does it impact my warranty?
b. How expensive is it?
c. Does it crush better than the regular steering? I don't want to die in a mild crash because its a rock solid steering
d. How sturdy are these? I see it as a lovely idea for long drives!

If I am not wrong, Formula cars have a detachable steering wheel.

But whats the point in buying one and using it on a day2day basis.
