Re: Contessa Classic

I am vaguely interested in acquiring a used contessa petrol 1.8. I have two questions

1. Are the spares easily available? Also is Contessa adaptable to new spares?

2. Is the engine good for mod?

Contessa SS mod. Pretty Clean

The only one I have seen in the recent time that's not overdone, well only thing that looks bad to me and its a personal opinion, are the decals or the stickers. To me, it's a job well done

Re: Contessa Classic

Frankly one of the best mod jobs I have seen on a Contessa. Nice work.

Dayyum, that is one H-O-T looking Contessa. I would love to own a car like this and cruise around all day . Where did your friend-of-friend get the work done, and how much was the total $$$? Any engine mods?

New Spares

Finally found out a decent guy experienced on Contessa's to take my Conti for maintenance and repairs. The workshop is called JAS service and is run by Mr Jayan.I told him about the annoying sound coming from the front suspension. It turned out to be busted ball joints and had to replace them all- front upper and lower ball joints and also the power steering ball joint. The bad roads here @ trivandrum made quick work of them it seems. Also some worn out belts would be replaced too.
The new ball joints bought from Coimbatore.

Here @Trivandrum once you give the order the shops arrange the spares in two/three days time. But some conti specific parts like the suspension bushes/joints and all are getting a lil harder to find in Kerala and if available are priced very high.Good thing is that spares are readily available in Coimbatore and decently priced too.The ball joints above were manufactured at Hyderabad, so i guess it should be available up North too.Still the life and reliability of these non OEM spares are a big '?'.

Re: Contessa Classic

Dear all,
I don't know how to drive a four wheeler. In fact, i never cared about learning driving one due to the sheer fact that no modern vehicle excites me much. Fortunately i will have to get accustomed to the steering wheel and pedals soon enough.

By God's grace I bought my first car (also my favorite car), a 1999 Contessa Classic 1.8 GL precisely 3 days ago. Apart from the regular features, it is equipped with a power steering and power windows. I'm estatic and can hardly contain myself!!

It had been parked for more than a year and needs a lot of retouches here and there.
I'm loading a pic before I took the car for a wash & will be uploading more as i keep restoring it.

Meanwhile I have a question: Why do we paint out the number plates of our vehicles while uploading the pic? (I find it annoyingly time consuming.)

Re: Contessa Classic

Your first car is a Conti! Wow!! you must be brave. And no, you do not need to paint out the plates on your own car.

Wow!!!!! It looks classic! It's in great shape and looks perfect, except for the Daewoo wheel covers, that flag or whatever that thing is, and the missing HM badge. Boy, am I jealous of you! Anyway, tell us about the past of the car, km run, and how much it cost you. And please post some more pics, including interior pics.

Re: Contessa Classic

Cyrus43, Badboyscad & Arkin, I appreciate your patronizing words
Past:
Oct 1999 - Nov 2009: This car was being used by the secretary of the Punjab Govt. (VIP Red Light, siren, stickers etc). Being a corporate vehicle she has had the good fortune to be timely serviced and fitted with original spares when needed. She has been mostly driven inside Chandigarh for ferrying the officer from his quarters to his office. The metallic flag pole on the right hand side of the bonnet used to bear the insignia of the Govt. office this car was associated with.

In Dec. 2009 it was auctioned off at a paltry sum of Rs. 35000 to the guy whom I purchased her from. He spent another Rs. 10,000-12,000 getting a VIP number plate & installing the mp3 player etc. He had aimed at modifying her to look like a Mustang but alleged his family consumes much of his time & money. Also, he claims that the vehicle has been driven less than 1.7 lakh kms. (Since the Isuzu petrol engine is a sturdy one it's not a major concern for me. Moreover the legendary roar of the engine confirms it is in wonderful condition!)
Present:
7 months ago, when I finally built up my financial capacity to buy a car, I started looking frantically for a Contessa. After many adventures, dejections & excitements I found her parked by the roadside, all covered up in dust and bird droppings.
I spoke to the owner, he demanded Rs. 45,000 and we closed the deal at Rs. 42,000. I estimate I'll be spending spend another 50,000 on restoration & paint-job. (Many would suggest I could have bargained a little harder & got the vehicle in under Rs. 40,000 blah blah blah – Honestly speaking, any Contessa lover would have paid 50,000 or 60,000 for the absolute joy of owning one!)

Pics:
1. This is the pavement i found her on.
2. Took her for a bath
3. Awesome 1st day. My friend drove around for me and we finally brought it home.
4. Broken connecting pipe. I wanted to get the complete exhaust system changed but can't find it in Chandigarh. So for the time being getting it welded.

PS: @Arkin: I'll be dumping the Daewoo wheel cup soon

Re: Contessa Classic

Welcome to the Club, Friend.
Contessa Ownership brings Rare Respect. (my personal experience as my conti got portico parking in a posh star hotel while my bro-in-law's skoda laura was nicely valet parked). So enjoy being a proud contessa owner.
Learn Driving Soon, and you would surely savour the drive rather than being chaffuered around. Any help, any time, just mail miyer in this forum, a genuine conti restoration walking encyclopedia, also friends like badboysscad, kittigadu, sanjeev, abysnthguzzler, mukund, ushkar - all would make you restore your car to its original glory.
Cheers, Happy Motoring, Best Regards.
