Not that i dont love the sweet 1.6 ROCAM but just have had a tough time wit it so far mainly being maintenance costs with regular wear and tear(being faster than other cars in the segment and more expensive as well) and impossible FE, I didnt want to but eventually had to go in for CNG.
Did a lot of research to extract maximum performance out of CNG on the kit that i have and managed to atlest equalise performance with what pertrol can deliver but nothing more than that can be extracted.

I had people suggesting me going in for a sequential injection kit to get more performance but even that would not help me too much besides the costs involved of replacing my existing kit worth Rs.40000 and spending Rs.55000-Rs.70000 for a new sequential kit.

But the drawback for me becomes:-
1. Price of a new sequential kit as compared to other investments in performance mods in the same price band.
2. Non-avilability of CNG in places other than Delhi and suburbs. So i cant go out to even nearby places like Jaipur, Chandighar etc apart from other destinations that i would love to drive to as running the car on FE of 6-8kmpl on petrol with/without A/C is not really affordable.
3. Due to my running, which is anywhere between 1200-1500kms a month i have to frequently fill up CNG, almost every second day as a tankfull can last just 120-150odd kms on my car, which becomes a pain after sometime.

Now i thought instead of spending that kind of money i could very well source a decent turbo diesel engine to plonk it in the Ikon.
I would get FE as well as performance and really spend money on mods than
going in for a new fuel system.
I got this idea from a guy who I met long time back who had replaced the 1.6 ROCAM with a Toyota Diesel block and the engine was so silent that one could not make out the difference until carefully listened to. But unfortunately don’t have his contact details etc, all I remember is that he told me a price of 25-30K for that engine.

I was thinking of a similar project:-
1. Source a good powerful Turbo Diesel.
2. Cost of the endeavour should be within 50K.
3. Don’t want to go in for a new car due to lack of finance for the same and poor re-sale value of the Ikon.
4. Want to keep and mod the Ikon for it being a compact sedan, sharp handling and build quality. I don’t really like external mods like wide body-kits etc and Ikon is not really a mod friendly car in that sense. Also don’t fancy ICE, exhaust notes from a FFE and an engine sounding at high revs are music to my ears. So I am more inclined towards performance/functional mods.

Trouble is:-
1. Where can I find/source a Turbo Diesel?
2. From whom? (Would be great if its someone from Delhi itself)
3. Who can service it from time to time? (Again same as point 2)
4. Other Options.

Don’t want to run into techs in detail at the moment as it would take up a lot of time. All I can think of is that of an engine with a tranny and probably cost of an Inter-Cooler if required and related components.

Please give out your opinions.
Thanks Guys

i really dont think an endeavour engine will fit into the ikon. plus the gearbox probably wont take the torque and the suspension will have to be beefed up for the extra weight.

Who said he wants to put an endeavour engine in an ikon???

:Shockked: Maan!!! this is an out of world option you are thinking of especially looking at the amount of money you have spent on that car in the last one year.

I really dont get the idea of swapping a 1.6 Rocam with a turbo diesel engine and looking at the history of your car, dont think the engine itself has given you any trouble.

In any case, good luck to your "endeavour"!! :). And keep updating on your progress.

Dont know which engine would fit into the ikon, but i drove an indica with a toyota N1 series engine fitted,he picked up the engine for 6-7k rebuilt it that costed him 25-30k (not sure),i think the had also changed the turbo,The engine was lighter than the indica's stock engine and the car was fast, compared to stock indica. and was giving a mileage of around 16 in city.

You can try your hand at mayapuri, and may be find something worth your use

Wow.... Never heard something like this before. My dream is to do a similar thing but plonk in a 1.8 zetec into this. Since the current engine is the most horrible engine to mod.

Iam suprised to heard the mods you plan to do. This could be one very complicated affair for you. It would make more sense to sell the car than do a swap.

the engine that you are looking for is the Toyota 2C engine , it is so goddamn smooth and silent and gives a FE of 20 to 23 in ambassadors:eek:. cost would be around 35(parts) to 15( to install).

This is the engine used im talking about,i think its very modifiable engine for more power.

whoops. my bad. was a bit sleepy when typing that post. lol. and i misunderstood his post.

Two engine options:
1. Ford 1.8 Diesel - no change in engine mounts ,but needs a suspension change.
2. Toyota 1N-Turbo - engine mounts need to be changed, maybe suspension also.

It will be better if you just change the car rather than getting into all this and wasting 6-8months of tunning and finally getting bored and selling it in thousands, you still have time to think over it :)

i have seen may lancers and citys with nissan engine . it gives a good fe and pick up is also nice. even one of my cousin has an esteem with nissan engine it is cheaper than a bike . my friend has same engine in his opel and it is not that much noisy also

Best to sell the car and buy something else which suits your need better.

i second that... for that much of an exercise on an ikon, youd rather get a different car.

Why does everyone think that there is no point on modding an Ikon?? I too have an Ikon and planning many mods on it!
