Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

I have been using the DDPai Mini and Mini Pro for over four years without encountering any problems. When selecting a dash cam, it's wise to steer clear of bulky models that struggle to regulate their internal temperature, as well as those that are fully loaded (high spec, feature loaded to brim); these are more prone to malfunctions.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

Yi Dashcam : Had purchased from Aliexpress in 2016 and used it in my Figo till 2020. Moved it to the Corolla in 2020 and used it till 2023 when I had a violence related incident where the dashcam footage was used to provide evidence to the police. Nothing happened with the case other than me losing my SD card.
At this point I decided that the second car also needed a dash cam, and moved the Yi to the second car(Nano) and purchased a 70mai 810 for the Corolla. The Yi dashcam is still running without any issues.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

1) Transcend Drive Pro 200 - Oct 2014 to Sept 2021. Was an excellent companion. Towards the end of its life, it kept dying even when plugged in.

2) DDPAI Mola N3 - Oct 2021 to Feb 2024 ( Gave it away along with my Etios Liva during sale). It was ok. My main concern was, sketchy connectivity with the app. Lack of screen was a downside for me.

3) RedTiger F7N Dual Channel - Feb 2024. Brought it after I brought the new Honda City. So far it's performing very well.

Yes. Without its own battery backup, the camera shuts off and on next ignition, the date gets reset automatically.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

DDPAI Mini Dashcam

Usage: Currently in use across three different cars
Purchase Dates: September 2020, April 2021, and June 2023.
Purchased From: Amazon.
Price: Approximately ₹3600 for the dashcam.
Accessories: CPL filter.
Status: All units are functioning well.
Lifespan: Over 4 years and still going strong.

Observations:
1. The overall fit, finish, and build quality of the unit purchased in June 2023 is below expectations compared to earlier models.
2. The CPL filters tend to loosen and fall off frequently, requiring adhesive to keep them in place.
3. The software often becomes buggy after major iOS updates, though issues are resolved once DDPAI releases an update.
4. Customer support from Nexdigitron has been good so far.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

Have been using 70mai A500S Pro plus+ dual dashcam for past 3 years. Also added CPL filter to the front which has reduced glare from the dashboard significantly. Working flawlessly so far.. Touchwood.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

I have the Blueskysea B1W from Aliexpress bought in 2018. The camera still works, however, I am unable to connect to the camera from the app after moving to iPhone 15. Not really sure if there is an updated app or I need to reset something in the camera. I am just allowing it to keep recording as I can pop the memory card and read it on my laptop if need be.

Anyone with Blueskysea B1W faced similar issue?

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

I use a Yi Smart Dashcam for the last 8 years. This has been on multiple cars and have been serving me well since 2016/17.

Its a simple dash cam that can produce decent footage quality and easy transfer via its app, making it a good value for money option.

The adhesive mount has required constant change though. I'm still surprised for its life inspite of their Chinese origin. I got it from US for a very nominal price back then.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

1. Transcend Drive Pro 100- served well for 9y in Safari DiCor. When I sold the car, I sold the dashcam through classified. It was working well until the time I sold off.

2. BMW OEM accessory- working fine since Jan 2020. App is cumbersome to use though.

3. Rovecam R2-4k with inbuilt GPS and battery backup. It was state of the art then, purchased from amazon US in 2017. I used it in Brio and Jimny. Its internal battery has become weak recently. Now the camera shuts down randomly. The customer service (though USA based) is top notch. I remember they gave me a firmware in two days, to accommodate IST (GMT + 5.30) which was not there in their original version (as it was built for US market). I realized this after coming to India. . Planning to use it for home monitoring with stable USB wall adapter.

4. Purchased a basic Pioneer 1.5k HD dashcam for Jimny from Amazon, last week, to replace the Rovecam. App is good but doesn't have many options to customize unlike my previous dashcams. Noticed, even at the lowest G-sensor, it sometimes starts emergency recording due to Jimny's body movement over potholes and speed breakers. Hope it lasts well. Fingers crossed.

Cheers,
-BJ

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

I didn't do the poll because its been less than a year since I started using dashcams.
I got a Transcend Drivepro 10 for the front back in July '24 and everything was fine for a couple of months. Then the fun started.
The camera would stop working randomly and overheat. There was no pattern to this. Sometimes it would give up in a few minutes and there were occasions when it worked without any hiccups for hours. Once it went off I would have to unplug it, reset the thing and let it cool off before it was useable again.
Naturally I contacted their service centre in Bangalore but was told that they handle all transcend products except dashcams.
Unwilling to give up I mailed Transcend directly and explained the problem in detail. I received a long rambling reply which seemed to have been drafted by a drunk legal assistant. I'm pasting an excerpt below:

Transcend will need to check the product to make sure it is genuine, and it Will take Work time (9-10 months) to send it back to headquarter for confirming. Once the the process is finished our distributor will contact with you.

So basically even if they decide that your product meets their high standards and deem it fit to check it under warranty, you need to give them the better part of a year after which they may just ask you to take a walk.
Naturally I wanted to toss it in the bin but out of the blue it started to work again and has not given me any problems in the last few months.
I bought a Pioneer VREC-H120SC to replace the Transcend but am using it as a rear camera for the moment. This one does not have the option of flipping the image but as far as I'm concerned its not really a problem because I'm not using it as a reversing cam.
The picture quality on the Pioneer is better then the Transcend which came as a bit of a surprise to me.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

From the opening post it is not clear as to what is the issue OP faced with the dashcam.. In most cases the SDcard used for the dashcam is not properly selected (note a dashcam is write intensive use case!).

I have been using 3 different dashcams all of them working for more than 5+ years.. You need to make sure that you select high endurance memories to store data.. even then you cannot expect >7 yr lifecycle (at best).

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

I have been using 70 mai pro plus A500S and A400(both dual channel) from 18 months now. I use Samsung SD card as advised by 70 mai and it runs flawlessly. I have done multiple 10-12 hour drives with dashcam ON all the time. Also, many of my contacts have purchased the same model and I have heard no complaints. The video quality is excellent in daylight and good light conditions and pretty decent in low light.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

Dashcam: THINKWARE Q800PRO Dual Channel

Bought on: Dec-2019, from the US (blackboxmycar website)

Price: ~23K INR

Status: 5+ years, and it is working absolutely fine without even a single issue.
- Records perfectly.
- No operating temperature issues in India.
- Thinkware cloud app has minor issues during connection, but when it is connected with the dashcam, it just works perfectly.
- I added a new SD card 2 years back when I moved the dashcam from my old to new car.
- No other changes done ever.

Saved me thrice:
Once when a wrong side crossing biker came in front and got a minor hit somewhere in rural Karnataka. Lot of local folks gathered and asked me if I was at fault. I only pointed them in the dashcam direction and the biker himself apologised and spoke to the folks that it was his mistake. We all went our own ways.

In another instance, we were stopped during the Cauvery water issue riots by the group of folks with political agenda, because my car bore a different state regn no. They recorded us, we recorded them, and the police personnel also warned them that recording is going on. We were let go after minor vandalism to the car.

In another minor incident someone hit me from the back as the person was busy on their phone while driving. Being a corporate guy, he apologised and we went our ways as there was a minor dent to the bumper. I was equipped with the evidence if the matter escalated.

Do invest in a good dual channel dashcam, stay safe and pray that you never have to use its footage ever.

Re: What is the lifespan of a dashcam?

Bought in 2012, it was a dash cam and action cam, essentially a duplicate of a GoPro (Shapewise too). It never failed, but I recently discarded it after 12 years out of concern for battery leakage as well as lack of new features.
