One of these perhaps? Or a different design which crosses across the steering wheel?
Serves as a visual and a functional deterrent

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

Hi guys, I see so many comments but one simple thing has been forgotten.

I use a humble Pin type gear lock, its an extra layer of protection, and without it
unlocked the car cannot be moved even if they manage break open doors, start the
car and whatever they do.

It just costs around 1500 Rs. and takes a couple of seconds to lock and unlock,
works like a charm.

In fact I have had car thefts thrice, but all they could manage is stealing the
spare wheel once and second time perfume.

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

A very crude and visible thing that one car lover taught me in Ireland was to use a thick metal chain and use it between the steering and the seat. Put a leather wrap around the steel chain and use a padlock. He had a soft top BMW Z4 and a 3 series. He used them on both. He gifted the same for my TT.

His logic was that when the miscreants look at it from the window they stay away as they want a quick job and usually won’t carry such cumbersome tools to cut steel.

If they are determined nothing will deter them but this keeps them away for the most part.

The leather / faux leather wrap prevents scratches and can be of a matching colour.

Take home message do something that is visible to the naked eye as the point is to deter them. Nothing is fool proof if they are determined and professional. They can break into the most secure cars in seconds if they want to.

To be honest I only used it especially when the car was parked at home out of respect for him as he was my landlord. I thought he was paranoid as I never used such things in India nor did anyone around me. This post coming from GTO means it is a menace here too.

This is a cheap and easily available hack and it works.

What are the best anti-theft options today for an open Jeep? I am seeing steering locks, gear locks, pedal locks, wheel clamps, GPS trackers, hidden immobilizers and what not!

Any expert advice? Thanks. If possible, do also share brand names & store links for easy ordering.
1. Put our national flag on the dashboard
2. Paste an Orange tiger/Govt of India/Police/Army on the vehicle

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

After the theft attempt on my car, reported here - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/stree...ml#post5377178 (Failed attempt to steal my Swift AMT from a basement parking in Delhi)

I have installed a Bluetooth-based anti-theft device by Trak N Tell. The product details are in the below link:

https://www.trakntell.com/product/en...r-intellilock/

It is an engine immobilisation system that would only let the car to crank but not start unless the car is immobilised by the mobile app. It could be discretely installed behind the glove compartment and adds an added layer of security, to take those couple of more precious moments away from thieves committing such an act.

However, there is a feeble 'tik-tik' sound from the device that could be a giveaway that something might be at play, preventing the car from starting. In terms of its operation, a loud beep is emanated from the device once the vehicle is immobilised, and on unimmobilisation, it gives out a double beep. It is so convenient to use that I immobilise the car whenever I leave it at a less-trusted parking spot.

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

A gear lock should be more than enough. No anti-theft device is 100% guaranteed. The point is to make it enough of a hassle that potential thieves move on for an easier target.

The gear lock is fairly easy to engage and remove. Great for when you're parking somewhere sketchy but just need a quick solution.

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

Come to think of it:

When thieves are cracking OEM anti theft devices, how can one really be trusting those that are easily available outside in shops? I'm sure they're certainly crackable by smart thieves!

Can you pls share some good products? Does it require welding or drilling a new car? I'm little apprehensive to drill or weld a new car.

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

I bought this particular steering lock, as it is having a number lock instead of a generic key lock that can be easily picked. The code is set from factory and even the owner can't change it, there is no provision, so it is much safer.

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

I own a crysta At a hot bread for thieves. Here is my take on securing the cars.
1. The most recommended Chor switch cannot be installed in new cars as it involves cutting of wires and can voids warranty.
2. The gear shift lock as far as my knowledge goes can’t be installed in cars with automatic gear box. Experts can throw more light on this
3. The pedal lock is easy to remove if your floor padding and mat is thick. It’s too difficult to lock and unlock in limited space.
4. Steering to brake or clutch lock is another reliable option. Avoid cheap Chinese lock as it’s very easy to open them and in case it number locks, very easy to guess the numbers
5. AirTags and tracker devices are another easy and reliable option but provides passive security.
6. Removing the induction fuse seems to be the easiest and safest option.

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

I’ve got a steering wheel lock for my HyCross. I know it’s not the most secure and shouldn’t take long to pick by a knowledgable thief. But my perspective is that the deterrent should be visual. Thieves don’t have a lot of time and would move on to the next car if they see a visual deterrent in a car they plan to steal. And this would also make them think that is there another deterrent once they enter the car?

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

One just has to route the chain through the bar for sliding the seat at one end and loop it through the steering wheel at the other . No welding needed. It is as simple as that. A medium size good quality padlock ( Godrej / Harrison) and some faux leather cover is all one needs plus of course a heavy chain.

The point is to deter them from breaking your glass or fiddling with your lock. Even a failed attempt costs us money and needless runs to the workshop .

The point is deterrence and prevention so that they walk away hence these visible things are better than electronics.

One benefit of not having an electrically adjustable seat. I like minimal electronics on my vehicles.

I am not sure about the size, but this one has superb reviews both on Amazon and on other sites. Sure, it's expensive, but it can meet your needs.*

Re: The 2023 Thread | Anti-Theft devices for cars

I think one needs to have a combination of devices. As many have suggested and even I have once read a thread on the internet written by an ex-car thief a hidden engine kill switch is the best way to prevent the car from being stolen.

Not sure which company can provide for the kill switch but if that is not available a combination of steering/gear lock and GPS (Onelap Go - A GPS Tracker for my Ford EcoSport) tracker will be a good combo. The attached fast tag can also act as a tracker from a reputed vendor like ICICI etc as this will help when a car passes a toll one tends to get an alert on his cell though at times it gets delayed. Old tricks like etching the car number on the windscreen should also be effective.

My Swift has two steering locks and one GPS tracker over and above the car's inbuilt security. Do put a "petrol" sticker on the fuel tank cap. This will make it less attractive to thieves as I am sure they will prefer a diesel Thar. Petrol makes it more expensive for a thief to drive the car out of Mumbai etc to other states where usual modus operandi is to steal one car and sell it another state. I believe diesel cars are more targeted then petrol ones. Your car being a petrol + AT will itself be the biggest deterrant for a thief.
