Mounting a 100cc motorcycle to my SUV - Opinions?

Hi all,

I have a Pajero SFX. And by chance I came in possession of a CT100B as well. This event kindled a thought in my head, why not mount the motorcycle on the back of the SUV to use as a point of transport during extended roadtrips, especially to the mountains. I know how ridiculous the idea sounds

However, there are certain considerations:
  • The Pajero is about 240mm slimmer than the length of the CT100B, so the bike will extend about 120mm from each side.
  • Is it legal to carry a motorcycle like this?
  • I am planning on shifting the spare wheel on a roof rack, and use the mounting point to hook the motorcycle somehow.
  • I reckon the spare wheel weighs around 30-40kg while the bike weighs roughly 110Kg. I will probably need to fabricate a custom rear bumper to support the bike.
  • Rear visibility?
  • How would I mount the bike onto the door hook?
Hoping to get a few tips on how to do this, but comments and critiques welcome as well. This is not a "need" for me, Im just thinking out loud about the possibilities.

PS: Roadtrips are obviously sometime away once we're free from this virus..

You could use a tow hitch motorcycle carrier. Tow hitches are designed to take the weight. Something like this.

A very interesting idea.
Can I ask a basic question - what do you mean by extended roadtrips? I think if you clarify, then fellow members might have some addtional suggestions.

One of the solutions as mentioned by GutsyGibbon is hitch carrier.
Another option is Motorbike Cradles (usually seen on towing flatbeds). But these are more suited to pick up trucks so not sure how this can possibly work on a Pajero.

I am no expert, but what you are trying to do is bordering on illegal territory (if not handled properly). Let me explain - In recent times, the judiciary and state governments have been hawkish when it comes to vehicle modifications. The suggestion in your OP of hooking the bike to tail gate will definitely change dynamics of the car vis-a-vis stock vehicle tested and approved by the manufacturer. This in all probability will require your car to be re-certified from RTO for road-worthiness.
Do consider this before you start any mods/customisations. I haven't seen this done in India yet so curious what comes out of your venture. Good luck!

I'd suggest the same as what GutsyGibbon has suggested. A hitch carrier would be the best and safe bet. I've had the chance of using one on a Fortuner. My younger sister's Hero Honda Pleasure was loaded on the carrier and was driven for about 500 km with no issues.

By any chance could you trade the CT100B for a TVS XL100?

Asking cause by doing that you could shave about 30 kg's, plus the difference in dimensions would also be favorable, the only downside being 60% reduction in tank capacity, though something that can be managed, I hope.

This was my initial choice. However, I do not see it being sold in India, so might have to go with a custom setup.

Might be a longshot, but as we're shifting to a remote working eco-system, I have a feeling I might be working remotely full time even post the pandemic. Such a situation might finally allow me to spend months on end in the mountains. So by extended roadtrips I mean hopping between mountain towns for weeks on end. Working during the week and traveling on the weekends. This motorcycle can work as tool to explore the small towns and surrounding trails more efficiently and economically.

I am almost certain, modifications are illegal, but what if I am able to hook the bike to the tail gate. Ofcourse, its not entirely possible without some modifications to the rear bumper, but I feel if done right it can be discreet enough to not count as a modification. Again, as you said, its not done enough in India so I am just gonna wait and see if someone else weighs in who can maybe weigh in with some concrete info regarding legality.

Thats good to know! Can you please share the details of the rack? Was it a DIY/Custom fab solution or did you procure it from a retailer?

Thats not possible. As this whole house of cards rests upon the fact that I need to retain this particular motorcycle. A TVS XL on the other hand could simply be dismantled and loaded horizontally on the roof rack

Ridiculous indeed . If it was an adventure motorcycle or one for any special purpose, I would understand. Mountain bikes too. But a CT100B? Why even bother. You can rent these kind of commuter motorcycles (and better ones) in almost any place in India. Why ruin your drive & over-prepare for no real benefits?

Too much of an exercise without any significant gains. My advice would be to ditch the CT100 completely and buy an electric bicycle.
An electric MTB can literally give you go-anywhere capability.

Re: Mounting a 100cc motorcycle to my SUV - Opinions?

Too many complications involved. In my last trip to Goa for rider mania, saw a a few Isuzu D Max, Tata Xenon etc carrying Royal Enfields behind. Saw another Isuzu with a BMW GS 1200. So if you are really keen on the idea, I would suggest go for something like the D max and carry whatever motorcycle you want.

I think for the bike in question he's best off getting something locally. For people to be driving their REs and GSs to "Rider" Mania in their Isuzu's sounds like the ultimate irony! I can understand if they're trucking it from far corners of the country but if they're driving in their D MAx's without riding their bikes then its the ultimate in pointlessness.

Hi, the bikes I am talking about are highly modified REs with extreme off road biased tyres and such for events like dirt track racing etc and thus may not be entirely road legal or comfortable to be ridden on highways at speeds.

There were also non road legal Himalayans for the dirt track slide school that were showcased in RM. So they were also transported on Trucks/ pickups.

The GS was not part of the event or I never saw it there, so not sure why was it being carried. My best guess with a German brand being carried on the back of another vehicle is mostly breakdown.

Re: Mounting a 100cc motorcycle to my SUV - Opinions?

If I were you, I would ditch CT100 & pickup a Honda Navi. I can use such bike, wherever I need it for short trips or if the SUV gets stuck, to summon help.

Interestingly, just yday I was browsing Insta & had downloaded these images. Check them out for ideas:

Re: Mounting a 100cc motorcycle to my SUV - Opinions?

Must admit, have dreamed of something like this too. The boring inter-state distances are best covered in a car. But to really explore a small town or hill station once you get there, nothing beats a bike!

Hopefully the bike rental business will pick up all over the country (though with this pandemic, who knows when that will be!) and that would be an ideal solution.

Re: Mounting a 100cc motorcycle to my SUV - Opinions?

Unless you are transporting an impractical (to ride on highways) bike to some remote location, such as maybe a motocross bike to the dirt trails or something similar, this formula has too many complications with no real benefits Like GTO said, renting a bike at your destination town works out much cheaper and convenient. Not to forget, all the mounting/unmounting hassles and the additional costs of making such an installation possible in the first place.

I know this isn't a vehicle as such, but if you must carry a second vehicle inside your car to explore local towns, would you like to consider a foldable bicycle or an electric bicycle (if you don't want to pedal) instead? You won't need any of those installations to support additional weight and you can still be agile and flexible at your trip destination. There are some nice electric bicycles available today which can double up as MTBs, and the batteries can be separated and charged as needed.

Re: Mounting a 100cc motorcycle to my SUV - Opinions?

How good/widespread is the bike rental business in smaller towns? I know Mysore has a couple of options. Almost everywhere in Goa, you can rent a bike. Ladakh also has several options. What about the other places, any info? In particular, cross-posting a query I had on another thread:

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route...ml#post4766670 (Delhi-Agra-Gwalior-Jhansi-Orchha-Khajuraho : Route Queries)

Not looking for anything fancy, any commuter bike will do. Thanks in advance for any replies!

EDIT: Just saw this: https://www.rentrip.in/ seems to have a pretty good coverage. Anyone used them?
