Re: Comprehensive guide to LED Headlight upgrades

I see everywhere that LEDs are recommended against in case of halogen projectors,is it actually the case?

The projectors in my car use HB3 bulbs and a shutter system for high/low beam and I was planning to change the bulbs to the 4300k 50W Osrams. I would like to know whether that would be a good idea.

Yes it works well and I have the same setup in my Jeep Compass which came with HB3 halogen projectors. The Osram 50w 4300 bulbs work well in it.
However they are still no match for 3 inch fog light projectors like GTR, Aes or IPH. I also have IPH M617 trio colour fog lights and they outshine the headlights by far

Tata Tigor - Low Beam bulb (Projector) changed from Halogen to LED

Finally, I have changed the low beam bulb (Projector) to LED. The brand name is Drive Maxx, and it comes with 120W Ultra white, 6000K. The company gives 24 month replacement warranty.

I know this is another Chinese make but the shop guy assuring 2 year replacement warranty hence agreed this brand.

When I drove back from the shop after new bulb installation, the low beam looked very bright and the visibility seemed much much better than the previous one (halogen bulb).

Will have to check and take some pictures while driving on the road in the night time and see how the difference is.

Dear Behemoth
May I ask you for some help. I am looking to upgrade the headlamps of my son's Polo 2014 second generation TDI. I believe it's an H4 set up. You sounded very enthusiastic about the Osram 50W 4200 bulbs although you seem to be a little less than enthusiastic later on. I think it's largely due to a superior set up already available in your car. Now, do you think these bulbs will have a marked improvement in Polo? I am really impressed by some of the technically sound points you have come up with. So I need some mammoth of advice from the behemoth. Thanks in advance.

Re: Comprehensive guide to LED Headlight upgrades

Thank you for the prompt reply. Actually, that's the last thing I want to do: ripping open the headlamp unit and converting it to projectors. I did it on my 2014 Verna and lived to regret it. Not that the light was bad, if anything, you could see Madurai to Chennai in a straight line. However, the Morimoto projectors would often move around in the unit and wreak havoc. So I would like to have your thoughts on changing over to an upgrade of bulbs 90/100 with a relay.

Sure, happy to help.
Firstly H4 Leds in reflector headlamps is generally not a good idea as it ends up causing a lot of glare to oncoming cars.
If you really want a good upgrade which is at least 3x in light and also a well focused beam, I would recommend retrofitting the headlights with LED projectors which will have a very nice beam pattern. You have good options from AES or Osram even available. But the catch is that you need to find a good installer who can open and install the projectors and then reseal the headlamps. That will give you the best light output as compared to any headlight bulbs in the headlamps.

I would say that things have changed a lot since 2014 and you should not base your decision on past experience here. You have very good led projectors available now which give a perfect beam. Last time you had an installer who did a shoddy job - This time try to find one who can do a much better install.
On the 90/100w rally bulbs, I do not recommend it as these headlights now have plastic housings and plastic lenses and they cannot withstand the extra heat well and ir can be fire hazard.

Instead of 90/100 bulbs you could go for 50w Osram LED bulbs as they also work fine in reflectors (though would be some glare). The low beam is much better but high beam tends to be a bit scattered and wider than required.

Re: Comprehensive guide to LED Headlight upgrades

Many thanks to you for your advice. I have just placed the order on Planet for the bulbs. Got them for 5800. I will, for the time being, fit them and see how things play out. In the future I think I will go in for the whole projector setup as you suggested. I will come back to you for further inputs then. I badly needed that push to make this purchase and you delivered it with minimum fuss. Thank you Behemoth.

Re: Comprehensive guide to LED Headlight upgrades

Headlight upgrade in my XUV7OO MX.

Recently I brought OSRAM 50W/4200K H7 LED bulbs from Boodmo at Rs 5268(including shipping). The package was delivered in 5 days. The stock halogens in my car were pretty good but I found them lacking whenever I used to drive on roads without dividers and under the glare from oncoming traffic. So, I considered upgrading the low beam setup in my car. My requirement was for a LED in the 4200-4800K range. Based on the discussion on this thread I went ahead and ordered the OSRAM LED.

Initially, I was sceptical about the performance of LEDs in reflector setup that my car has. But after using the LED for few days, I am quite happy with my decision.

1. Output with stock setup
Comprehensive guide to LED Headlight upgrades-pxl_20231205_1400202292.jpg

2. Output after LED upgrade
Comprehensive guide to LED Headlight upgrades-pxl_20231205_1454411012.jpg

In my opinion, brightness has increased by around 50%. LEDs have been fixed at 6-12 O'clock.

OSRAM has mentioned that the bulb is for off road use only. Therefore, I'm unsure whether using these bulbs is legal. I will continue to use halogens in the high beam and decide on upgrading them later.

Cheers!

The position of the Leds should be 3-9 O'clock. That will give you the best beam pattern and spread. Initially I had also put mine in at 6-12 but later on changed it to 3-9. That is the correct position for the Osram Led 50w bulbs.

Re: Comprehensive guide to LED Headlight upgrades

Does anyone have the data sheet for the new gen osram 4200k 50w led? This bulb doesn’t seem to exist on osram’s website. I also asked a few sellers, but most of them didn’t have it or ignored me.

Dear Behemoth
My Polo has double-barrel headlights, one for low beam and the other for high-beam. Where should I fit these bulbs into? And could you explain 3-9 o' clock position. I remember that diagram of yours and I thought I should fix the led's in absolute vertical position. Am I right? Could you clarify. Many thanks in advance.

When you switch to high beam, does the low beam get turned off? excuse the naive question please.

Use the leds in the low beam as they will give you good light for normal use. For High beam you can stay with existing halogen bulbs.
For the 3-9 position the led blade (base on which chips are mounted) is vertical and the led chips point to either side (so light is emitted sideways on both sides). This gives a good beam pattern and spread and is the optimum position for the Osram led bulbs.

What I meant was that the stalk of the led is vertical with the diodes facing 3-9 O'clock. Hope this is the right way.

I have a twin barrel setup in my car. Switching on the high beam does not turn off the low beam. I can use low beam or low beam + high beam together.
