There's always that guy at the party who takes the joke too far, and at this year's Geneva Motor Show that role falls on the shoulders of the German tuners at Carlsson with its CS50 Versailles. It has created a customized Mercedes-Benz S-Class covered in thousands of dollars of gold leaf. Carlsson claims that the CS50 is inspired by the famed Palace of Versailles in France, but it is being marketed to extremely wealthy buyers in China. The company claims that it has already found 10 buyers of a planned 25-car production run for these golden amusements (as far as we know, none of them are Mike Myers wearing hot pants). The exterior alone takes over 200 man-hours for each car to fit the new body kit and cover it with 1,000 sheets of gold leaf, which is then sealed in clear coat to keep it in place. The wheels are polished to a mirror finish in reference to the Versailles' Hall of Mirrors. Of course, the gold continues inside with an additional 100 man-hours to cover 278 parts, including many buttons, knobs, air vents and speaker grilles, with more gold leaf. Carlsson claims the interior alone has 12,000 euros ($16,480) in gold. It also refits the interior with matching champagne-colored Nappa leather. |
