I do not know the reason for your wanting to buy a performance air filter. However, there are other options available apart from K&N.
In the performance segment there are brands like Ractive and Green. if you do a search on TBHP, you will come up with some interesting facts. You may find them cheaper that K&N too.

Apart from this performance segment, there are many japanese replacement filters that now are available in the standard auto spares stores. Look around at your local spare parts stores. Companies like Osaka that make replacement air filters for most japanese cars. They are not costly at all and claim to be better than the filters that the companies themselves provide.
I don't think they provide an appreciable boost in performance through.

If your motive is to increase your car's performance, there are many more RECENT threads that discuss performance air filters, apart from this old one you've dug up.
I suggest you use TBHP's advanced search function.

You will learn a lot from these threads.

Don't ask me, I know nothing about performance boosts (in cars) I know about other kinds though, but they cannot be discussed on a family oriented forum like ours.

Cheers
