re: DIY Car Horn - Different sounds for different situations

Nice idea, albeit probably not legal :(

Actually, I regularly want a "horn" that says, SORRY!

re: DIY Car Horn - Different sounds for different situations

Nice idea ! I have been thinking of a simpler mod to have a horn directed diagonally outwards from the front left corner of my car, to "shout" at those bikes who want to squeeze in between me & the car in front.

Wow, this is amazing! And since it allows you to upload the custom wave files as horn sound, may be I can add some nice magic words like sorry and please, some good tunes and some choicest of words to suit some occasions!

Super DIY but I wont actually do this until I find ways to do this without any cutting and splicing of wires/ dash plastic.

Believe it or not, this already exists in a production car!

Chevy has equipped their electric Volt with a "Pedestrian" horn, for cases where the silent EV goes unnoticed by pedestrians in congested areas, and the "main" horn is too loud/rude:

OK, I admit it. My mind turns to the naughtier sounds one could use. Of course, it would not befit this forum to be specific (and we all have imaginations!) but one of them would accompany that cloud of smoke that results from heavy acceleration in a mostly-city-driven diesel --- and which I tend to use to annoy tailgaters.

Re: DIY Car Horn - Different sounds for different situations

When I was a child, my grandfather's Ambassador had a little flip switch retrofitted to the right side of the dashboard.

It switched between what he called the "city horn" (decent) and "highway horn" (loud).

Now that I think about it, maybe I took it for granted and assumed it was a much more common modification than it actually was!

Ambassador type horn is best in India. I wonder if it would be possible to fit one behind also for the idiots who incessantly honk for no reason just because they feel uncomfortable if they don't.

Re: DIY Car Horn - Different sounds for different situations

Some times with people getting on your nerves by honking behind you, this is the type of horn that you need

Re: DIY Car Horn - Different sounds for different situations

The Hyundai horn is a little bit 'meek', as a toot!!

I bought, on eBay, a set of Fiamm VW original fitment twin tone horns (sourced from a breaker in Lithuania!).

The horns are fitted directly under the 'slam panel' and emit directly out the grille - above the rad/a/c condenser.

I have retained the factory Hyundai horn, creating a loud/blaring 3 tone effect... Very raucous

I have picked up the power from the socket of the Horn Relay and have an inline 10A blade fuse.

I have made a Tube 'short' so you can all hear the horns in Action

Is it just me or are there only 2 distinct tones? The toot of the stock horn and then a louder, more blaring horn?

My mind would immediately think of a large vehicle if I heard this horn on the road.

By this, I assume you have taken power from the wire that leads via the fuse panel to the horn relay. Please do ensure that the fuse for the horn inside the fuse panel is rated higher than the current required for both horns together+safety margin(20%). ie.) I would expect it to be 20A (since you have used a 10 A fuse for the new horns and I expect the stock one to atleast use 5A, leaving us with a safety margin of 5A.)

If it is not 20A, do not change it before confirming the wires will be able to handle 20A.

If not, I would suggest adding a new relay from the battery and using a wire to connect the 2 switching pins of the relays together.

Why do this?

Over time, use of higher current than intended through wires that are designed for lower currents might lead to heating and melting of the wires and chances of a short.

A fuse should stop a catastrophic accident, but replacing the harness might become a costly affair.

Since horns aren't a constant source of power draw (unlike headlights), this should take a long, long time to happen, but I believe in erring on the side of caution.

Cheers.

P.S. - I am not a professional, so if the idea is dumb, I'm all ears to listen.

Thankyou for taking time to comment.... I cannot believe there are over 300 views of my YouTube !!

Agreed on 'power/heat in loom' but, again, you say short bursts...

It IS fairly outrageous, on that Blast!!

Kindest regards
