Re: Heads Up Display 'Navdy' for ANY car!

Copy pasting two emails I had sent to my friend when he showed me this video some time back:

Quote:
Since when do commercial pilots use a HUD??

To be honest, what the video shows and how good it actually is (both visually and in terms of voice recognition / gestures) are probably going to be quite different in reality!

A- for marketing video
C for product

That's my guess.

From what i can see, the optics of this HUD are nothing special. (Open to correction).

Real HUDs have optics that make the projected image actually seem like its hanging out almost at the front end of the hood. This lets you focus further down the road - which is also safer.
Example:

I don't think you'd ever get ^this^ kind of a visual effect with Navdy.

Navdy is more like a 'see-through smartphone'.

Note how their demo images conveniently exclude the extremely bulky dash-top device!!

Its not a replica, better buy a dedicated smartphone for this purpose alone and you will get a better interface.

Navdy is not a new concept, its a polished version of another product, SmartHUD. What I understand is that both uses the same technology internally, a pico projector, a collimator, projection lens. In Navdy, the projected image is reflected by using a mirror surface to a transparent front reflective transparent glass may coated with polariser to enhance the viewability. It cant project like the HUDs in BMW or something similar which requires an infinite projection using laser projectors (the best for day light visibility) which is very expensive.

A similar DIY project can be done using a pico projector or an LED light source / a smartphone lcd in the path / a fresnel lens and a projection lens with less F (the most difficult part) and a specific transparent sticker on the windshield.

Another option is to do a mod to the normal smartphone HUD, replace the backlight with a brighter light similar to a projection system and use fresnel to distribute it evenly. I have a plan to do this, but not with a smartphone screen, but with an android board and a 4.3" lcd (almost similar to the concept of a DIY projector), dont know when will I get time to start, even my Andrio project is still in progress state only.

This one does not look like a projector in the real sense. If you closely look, the text printed on the screen is inverted and I dont see any lens for projecting an image. I guess its just the reflection of the display that shows up on the windshield glass. Which I think is good enough for night driving but am not sure about its visibility in daylight.

Exploride - An Indian HUD Unit

Hello.

Read an article on rediff about an Indian startup company crowdsourcing to make a HUD unit as an aftermarket accessory.
www.exploride.com
http://www.rediff.com/business/repor...h/20151009.htm

A very interesting product, sounds very good.

Their youtube ad:

An Indian startup, wish them all the best.

Mentioned it in another thread, and moving the discussion here.

Dunno. I just read about it today, and the link you posted is news to me. The Exploride unit seems to have an edge with the dashcam feature.

Cheers.

If you read the comments section of their website there are a lot of disgruntled customers out there. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/e...car/#/comments

The product is in making for the last couple of years. The manufacturers seem to be postponing the release dates multiple times. So, I think I will wait till the product is out in retail market and then check it out.

Have been following this product for a while now and they have postponed the release date 2 or 3 times so far. Like you said, lots of disgruntled backers who are now asking for refunds. The people who are still hopeful aren't happy with not getting updates from the company on the progress. I mean, I understand innovations such as these, that require a lot of hardware development are bound to run into various speed bumps which are difficult to foresee and so things get delayed but the least they can do is keep their backers up to date on the progress. Send out a weekly update on where things stand, share some pictures to show your progress etc. Instead, all I am reading is that the last update was more than a month back, or the fact that they are deleting posts that criticise them etc.

I was keen on backing them but given all these problems, I would rather wait for the product to be launched, even if I have to pay more for it then.

Any chance you can have him send you some pics? Am really keen on getting one of these devices but want to be sure they are everything they claim to be. If not, I would at least like to know what to expect so that I am not too disappointed later.

Thanks for sharing your HUDWAY Glass review. Even I was contemplating on this sometime back but didnt buy. Regarding the day light performance this is what HUDWAY has to say:

How does it work in daylight?
Looks like the audience doesn't like short answers OK guys, here is an abstract of a person who tested HUDWAY Glass prototype (#nofilter #nophotoshop #nocorrections):

«Daytime driving. Performance depends upon time of day and brightness of the sunshine. Let me explain. In general, you can see the image clearly in HUDWAY Glass. Not unexpectedly, the level of detail that you can see at night is not present during daylight hours. Large image objects (arrows, lane markings and such) have good resolution but smaller image objects (text and numbers) may be a bit harder to discern. For example, in Awesome HUD there is a compass that is displayed on top that fades out a bit. This issue can be corrected somewhat by adjusting the angle of the glass but it is still present to some extent.
Whenever you drive directly into the sun, the performance degrades significantly to the extent that the smaller image objects disappear.
However, the large image objects remain visible. This is to be expected but cannot really be helped unless you can adjust the brightness of the display on your device so that it reflects better onto HUDWAY Glass».

And, this clearly explains why HUDWAY app deliberately avoids small elements (like texts or icons), and shows only the most important info — shows it large. Also, the visual info is supported (or duplicated) with voice assistant.

So India is by default pretty sunny throughout the year which might degarde the glass's quality. However, it should perform perfectly during evening/night . Looking forward to your night drive testing.
