1) The tachometer itself, as you'd mentioned you'd need a bracket too.

2) Engine electrical components, the Zxi does not have a separate ECU, hence if the tach plugs into the ECU, you shouldn't have an issue.

3) Wiring harnesses, no special mention of wiring for the tach, however the instrument panel wiring harness is different across variants.

4) Electrical controls, again no special mention of the tach.

5) The dashboard, the Zxi appears to have a different instrument panel compared to the other variants.

Unfortunately, I do not have the A-Star's service manual with me - yet

Usually the wiring diagram is sold separately & even has its own part number (which is usually mentioned in the service manual). The service manual will have detailed information regarding the ECU pin-outs & also information on diagnosing tach issues.
Muchos gracias! Thanks i need this. I'm still waiting for this parts book to come. This gives an idea of sorts.

I asked if the workshop manual is available on order but the MGP store says that it is not. Is it true? I think i read in the Alto thread that it was available. What is the procedure in going about ordering it?

Can't guess for sure if the difference in Console is due to one having an additional connector for a tacho. Maybe its due to the presence of additional *working* warning lamps?

Thanks to you i guess i found out the harness i need *if* one doesn't exist already in the VXi for tacho - Harness assy instrument panel, ZXI. So if i replace the stock harness with this one, then i guess it should have a connector for tacho. I hope.

Retro tacho if chosen well offers more function over the stock one, for eg it will have a shift lamp which you can set to flash at a particular RPM. Its helpful to a driver looking for maximum performance as well as maximum efficiency depending upon what RPM it is set. The OEM tacho looks OEM and stock (and often cheap) apart from it no advantages.

Thanks, not intending to hijack the thread but a few more queries - eg. there's no tacho on Toyota Liva D as stock, now how would one fit an after-market tacho on this one, easy/difficult, how right/purposeful or just a gimmick?

How does one choose the red zone, considering there's no company fitted tacho for reference?

There's a general tachometer thread running here. Here's it:
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/modifi...meters-32.html
You may get better response there.

You need to figure out how to wire in the Tacho. There are Diesel tachometers available with its associated pickup that gets the signal from the Diesel pump. Im not sure if this would work in a CRDI engine, maybe it will. The redline is after the RPM where the engine makes it maximum power. If the redline is not mentioned in the manual you can assume that redline might be after couple of hundreds of RPM after the peak power. If peak power is produced at 6200RPM then redline might be at 6500RPM. One way to find out is to install the tacho and revv to the max in second or third gear and find out at which point the engine starts to cutout, that is your redline.

You're welcome The Parts-Catalog, along with the MGP price list spreadsheet (available here on Team-Bhp) are all one needs for mods & experimentation on Marutis. The spreadsheet in particular is really awesome !

In the MGP spreadsheet there is an entry for the A-Star's service manual, the part number is 99500M68K00-74E, the entry says Volumes 1 & 2, cost is Rs. 653 (not sure if this is the price for each volume or for both in total though). To get the manuals, you could try quoting the part number to your MGP store - usually Maruti does not make a fuss when it comes to Parts-Catalogs & Service-Manuals. One thing though, the last time I went to get MGP parts (I get them from the MGP distributor for TN) I was told that Parts-Catalogs are in short supply since Maruti is moving from printed material to CDs.

I was tied up with other commitments so didn't get time to look into this. The plan is still active and when something happens i'll update here.

Guys might be off topic. But can you install a tachometer for a carb zen. If so where can I procure one and how to setup the shift indicator if I get one with the same.

Reviving an old thread here. Looking to add a Tacho to my girlfriend's A-star. Sankar, were you able to fix it?

Your A-Star is a reference point for all that I am planning to do. thanks!

Here's the link to the thread for Tachometer installation. Do go through and you can do the DIY too.
