HID Beam Cut-Off Pattern

Hi Guys!

Could someone please post a photo showing the beam pattern when the HID kit is installed within a stock reflector unit? I mean beam pattern on a wall or something. I have HIDs on my lancer, but the headlamp is not the clear lens variety. Hence I cannot use that to decide on whether its a good idea to get HID lamps for my new Verna.

On the Lancer I've gotten the lamp assembly aimed low so that I get an intensely bright low beam without blinding oncoming traffic. I've had it for over a year and have never heard a complaint from anyone. But I'm not sure how it will work with clear lens lamps.

If somebody could click the beam cut off on a wall, I'd be much obliged!

Also, how do HIDs perform when installed in Fog Lamps?

Thanks in advance!

Tassem.

@Mods: I could not find a specific thread where I could post this. Hence the new post. Please realign or merge as you feel necessary. Thanks!

I have posted the pics in the "Lighting Thread". As for the fogs, HID's wont perform well in fogs unless it's running 3000k HIDs.
Fogs are meant for short range spread and not for the long range spread. Also, the fogs are subject to water seepage so installing HIDs wont be a great idea. HIDs may get damaged soon.

If you are willing to spend some cash, you can try installing T70 Volvo headlights. Fits swift perfectly. My friend got this on his swift running 80/90w Philips. Here's a pic (the blue swift). It's around 7k for the set.

Re: HID Beam Cut-Off Pattern

Hi Naveen,

Thank you for the quick reply, but the Volvo lights wont fit my car as its the new Verna. Do you know anyone who has HID in the stock reflector? Any idea how the beam pattern would be?

OT: I bought my car in cochin

Re: HID Beam Cut-Off Pattern

@Naveen.Raju: Slightly off-topic. I have HID's installed in my fog lamps and have been using them in the monsoons. I They are fitted in the factory provided fog lamp assembly (Hyundai i20). Do you recommend me using them or should i get them off and run regular bulbs?

Re: HID Beam Cut-Off Pattern

@Niki: These are H27 HIDs right? Which brand did you go for and could you please post a beam pattern on wall pic?

To answer your question:

1- If you have 6000K HID in your fog lamps, they will be useless to you in fog.
2- To have useful penetration in fog, you need to get 3000K Yellow HID.
3- The stock 27W lamps that come in Hyundais are more "Driving Lights" than Fog Lamps.

So, the HID retrofit being intensely brighter than the stock lamps, it will be better in slightly foggy/dark conditions. I'm sure you'll agree to this. But in real hardcore fog, both will be useless to you but the edge will still be with the HID since its brighter. But a 3000K HID kit will blow both of these out the water!

Another thing to keep in mind is that if the HID has dramatic light scatter, it will actually light up the fog in front of you and not whats beyond. So (theoretically) you may be blinding yourself in a cloud of light. I experienced this first hand with my Handheld light.

Ideally these lamps focus a beam that looks like a horizontal bar of light. I'm guessing the idea is to light the road as close to the ground as possible since fog doesnt settle so low. So after installing your HID if the beam is still a horizontal bar of light and does not look heavily diffracted, you're good to go. This is why I wanted a beam pattern pic from you. The 3000k edge will still be true though.

Akshay, thanks a ton for the images! I owe you one mate! The last pic is what I'm most interested in. It seems the cut off is acceptably sharp. Do you remember whether its in High or Low?

They are a set of images(read pair) for the same location.
Low beam first then high beam.

Re: HID Beam Cut-Off Pattern

Hey thanks again for clarifying. I'm beginning to feel that HIDs perform marginally better in clear lens lamps than they do in Old gen head lamps with the fresnel lens.

Oh you brought the car to Cochin or bought from here? Are you talking about the fogs or headlights? Well, I have many friends running HID's in both. The pics I attached in the other thread is my friends car (Swift). Install them properly and most of the scattering issues can be solved. There is a place in Blore where you can get the headlight beams aligned. Not sure whether they do this on ordinary reflector headlights but it's worth a shot. Many bhpians have tried this and are happy about the result.

Well, it depends on one's individual satisfaction. Which color temp are you running? Since it's the fog, I would recommend 3000k HID's. They penetrate the fogs well (I know fogs are nowadays not used during foggy condition ). Since our roads conditions are not all that great, fogs are prone to damages. Also fogs are not 100% sealed. They are prone to water seepage thus damaging the HID's. Wouldnt have mattered if these were normal halogens but if these are HID's it will definitely hurt a lot, especially your wallet.!

As of now since you already have them, keep using them. When this goes "kaput", go for normal halogens. Maybe, ones with a slightly higher wattage (80/90w)

Cheers!

I bought the car in cochin and drove it back to blore. I got the car delivered in under two weeks with the mallu connection Not to mention the huge tax savings!

I was talking about the headlamps. As for aligning, I do them myself. I know its highly technical and we need the aiming chart etc but all you need is a philips screw driver and common sense. I realised this long back when I once took my car to a professional for aiming it. Where I saw that the so called "Aiming Device" is nothing but a contraption with a couple of lens that focus your beam pattern on to a chart with a line that tells you where the beam will go. Find a decent road or level ground and you can do this yourself in real life situations with better precision. This applies only in India where over 50% of the other traffic have improperly aimed lights.

I always aim them a little lower than necessary so that even when you're on an incline, the glare is comparatively less. Lots of practice doing this on the lancer. Tried it on the Verna as well cause for some reason, my LHS HL was aimed ridiculously lower than my RHS. Made it look like those cabs where, they do this intentionally.

The Verna has 6 beam level settings internally. I align the beam to my normal high when its on 4. So if I need to lower it further, I still have 3 stops. The 5 and 6 will aim the beam higher if ever needed.

Re: HID Beam Cut-Off Pattern

I had to learn the hard way or be blinded I'm sure it'll be easier for you to aim your lamps yourself since most aftermarket lamps are designed that way with easy access to the aiming gears.

Re: HID Beam Cut-Off Pattern

Thanks a ton for the pics Anshuman. The beam pattern is sharp enough to be reassuring. Are you sure they're 6000K lamps? Looks more like 4300K to me.
