Advice on buying Used Land Cruiser

Dear Friends & fellow bhpian's

A contact of mine plans to buy an used Land cruiser 4X4 4.2 Ltr V8 Petrol 2002 model very well maintained from a high profile owner in India.I assume all the papers and documentation of the vehicle is legal. The vehicle has done about 66,000 kilometers and is supposedly maintained very well. What price would be a good deal/fair deal for my contact to buy this vehicle, I have limited data so any inputs would be of great help to me and would give my contact a fair idea. Please pour in your inputs. Thank you.

Regards,
Dilip

The petrol was a 4.7 while it is the diesel that's a 4.2. Which one are you talking about? Well-maintained diesels of the same vintage would probably catch 23 - 25L in Mumbai. The petrol would, understandly, be much cheaper due to its horrible FE. Still, if you get a good deal, the petrol is as capable and the money saved takes care of the fuel bills! How much is the asking price?

Don't assume. If there are any unpaid duties / taxes on the car, your friend will be legally responsible for the same. And the amounts won't be small. I suggest getting the papers verified before picking her up.

Excellent. The LC will probably last him 3 - 4 lakh kms at the minimum, if maintenance schedules are adhered to. Still, it would be a good idea to pay a small service fee and get the car checked thoroughly by a professional.

Thanks GTO, I Assume in the sense my contact for sure knows the papers/vehicle is legal. I took his word for that. Would verify for sure.
Yes so a price of 25 lakhs should be a good deal.

No no! 25 is the tops you would pay for an immaculate condition 1 owner diesel. For a petrol, bargain it down substantially.

What about maintaining a Land Cruiser? I'm guessing they're pretty trouble free and with the number of them around I assume finding parts wont be such a big headache either. Would Toyota work on it or would you have to go to a private garage ? Would a Prado be a lot cheaper?

@Khank: I Think the vehicle in question here in Chennai has been maintained by Toyota itself.

I'm not in a position to advise on the price, but in my experience, series 100 Land Cruisers are perhaps the best 4x4's available. I had one, and it had the best combination of looks, comfort, performance and reliability. I would judge it as the best car I ever owned. Service is not an issue, and spares are easily available, both genuine and re-manufactured. I sold mine as I was looking for a Q7 and the LC200 series was launched.

Wont the petrol model be more expensive? AFAIK, it was only the Toyota Landcruiser Cygnus which was lauched in petrol (7.7 V8). The 4.2's (Diesel) were all normal Landcruisers.

Alternatively if its a 4.7 petrol then it could be a genuine Lexus LX470.

Spares-wise I dont think there should be a problem. With the number of LC you see here, availability wont be an issue if you have the right contacts.

I have a 2000 model landcruiser(100 series) GX 6 cylinder 4.5 ltr petol and its not a lexus. (G, GX, GXR are the trim variants)

The 8cylinder 4.7 ltr LCs can be recognised by the VX or VX-R badging.
These are the 100 series models that were available in the GCC(Gulf).
Lexus LX470 shares the same 4.7 V8 engine that came in the LC VX/VX-R.

Hi Guys,
Just bumping up this old thread as dint want to start a new one
  1. I was just wondering what should be a decent price range that one should budget for a FJ80 4.2 L TC Diesel.
  2. Also as some embassy owned vehicles are available, should there be some amount of premium for such a vehicle if we are sure that we are getting it from a very trusted source? If so then by how much?
  3. As these vehicles will be atleast 13yrs or more old, it is natural that the vehicle will have done atleast 200k + kms keeping in mind an average of 15k kms a year. Therefore should the buyer avoid such a vehicle or as they say that toyota engines are very reliable, so such a vehicle can be bought and kept comfortably for the long term.
  4. What is the life span of the engine of a FJ80 series cruiser? If the engine would have to be overhauled, how much should that cost
  5. Suspension Job: Life, Cost, etc
  6. Parts availability: Any problems on this front?
Cheers
Harjeev

Re: Advice on buying Used Land Cruiser

Need suggestions, is this worth at quoted price? what can all go wrong in this model year? apparently this has Air suspension and the current owner has got some leather work done on seats and dashboard which probably gets damaged in similar cars of this period due to Heat as per seller.

The only part I liked is:

entire service history with Toyota Dealership
Other than that, I don't see the point in buying an 11 year old SUV with nearly 90,000 kms on the odometer. Don't get me wrong - if it was my own, I would use it for another 10 years & 90,000 kms. But I'm not buying someone else's 90,000 km car. Price is also ridiculous.

If you want something rough & tough, why not get a used Fortuner? Could get a much newer one with lesser mileage for the same money. You already have other luxury cars, so not like you need a luxury SUV (the Prado is not a luxury SUV anyway).
