Advice on buying a Used Volvo V90 Cross Country

Hi all,

I found a certified Volvo V90 CC at a local dealer at around 40 lacs asking price. It has done 25k KMs and is in a pretty good shape.

I love this car but not sure what is the reliability record and would it make sense to buy it now? The alternatives are BMW 6 series GT or the new to be launched Camry.

Thanks in advance.

Volvo's are like cockroaches. They will survive a very long time. 25k is a very low mileage.

Techwise the BMW may be better since Volvo is sort of dated by now. But this very dated-ness means it is robust and will work. For the most part.
If the in-car tech is important, it is the BMW.

I don't have opinions on the just launched Camry.

Hey thanks! I now have a year old BMW 6 GT petrol with 5k kms available for 55lac. Camry won’t be in the showroom until Jan so that’s a tough one.

BTW I see your location as Helsinki! We should do a team-bhp meet up when I’m there next time! Most probably summer next year.

You are right to be worried about the reliability record. Volvos of yore used to be the most reliable things on the road. But, under the new Geely ownership, they have taken a plunge into the freezing arctic waters with longevity.

Luckily, the reliability is only poor on the electrical front and the powertrain should be relatively trouble free. The V90 Cross-country is a definite future classic as Volvo is moving away from the estate bodystyle entirely. It's the last of its kind and worth a good look.

Also remember, the engine is diesel, so any regulatory limits will have to be dealt with as they come.

One last thing to note, Volvo's touchscreen has been a common point of failure across all models. Do check yours thoroughly if you buy one, because the aircon controls are embedded in it. I'd happily direct you to one over the 6GT or Camry anyday. Happy motoring!

Thanks. Time to check thoroughly then. I’ll get the professional PDI done. The main thing to check would be kms. 25k is not much and the service history should verify and hope can be trusted.

The heart is still saying BMW though. This will be a tough one!

Its one of the cars that I enjoyed testing. I drove this in extreme monsoon conditions on a ghat road. Unflappable! Go for it!

If the heart is saying Beemer, go with that! The Beemer is equally good. It has a peppier petrol engine, solid mechanicals and AWD just like the V90. It won't be quite the same as an estate car though and you might blend into the crowd a bit more with it. A left field choice, but have you looked for a Mercedes E class estate? They sold them at the same time as the Volvo, but the Merc came with air suspension and damping control.

Yes, only the 640i GT had the AWD option. The entry level 630i is RWD. I just test drove the Volvo and made a final offer. Fingers crossed, if it goes through then I am not considering the BMW anymore.

Volvo V90 Cross Country was my dream car and I was looking for a used example few years back. Eventually I backed out because of diesel (with uncertain future) and the cars available were already 5-6 years old.

Which year is this? I saw a Oct 2017 model here in Mumbai for 32 lacs negotiable. I too love the car and it is a sure a modern classic. Plus 480 Nm of torque, its a hot wagon even by today's standards.

06/2020. What do you think would be a fair price for it?

Given its a BS-4 vehicle, it may be registered in June 2020, it has to be manufactured before March 2020. I would say anywhere between 35-38L even though Carwale indicator says 40L. Also because the last batch would have sold in heavy discount of anywhere 8-10L. So please back calculate using depreciation percentage. Another way could be looking at IDV on various insurance portals.

Re: Advice on buying a Used Volvo V90 Cross Country

When people talk about Volvo reliability, do note that they are talking about the pre-Chinese takeover era. Cars from 2015 onwards with the 2.0 diesel/petrol 4cyl engines are a bit hit or miss on the reliability aspect.
