Re: Audi Q7 Vs BMW X5 Vs Mercedes GLE | Which Luxury SUV?

Hi,
I'm planning to buy a BMW x5 and have booked 30d Msport. But now I'm in dilemma whether to change it to 40i.

My main reasons for going with 30d are:
1. GTO's 530d thread and his appreciation for the engine. GTO says that german cars are better with diesels.
2. I'm quite fuel efficiency conscious person. And my idea is even if I drive a diesel spiritedly, I'll get healthy fuel economy figures. But if its a petrol, in the long run I might not enjoy it that much. My usage will be around 12-15k kms/yr.
3. Resale value. I live in south India and diesels are preferred here.
4. Also I feel 30d engine is a better choice for x5 type of car.

While my apprehensions with the 30d engine are:
1. I'm a car guy and I enjoy driving a lot.
2. The car will be self- driven. So heard that 40i is more fun to drive. No 40i test drive vehicle available at showroom.
3. Refinement. Diesel TD vehicle at showroom had slight vibrations when idle indicating that engine was on. That may not be the case with petrol.
4. Possibility of extension of delhi's 10-yr rule to other cities. Then resale value would plummet.

Experienced bhpians please share your views.

I am also based in Kerala. I have been negotiating with Audi Kochi but I have not been successful obtaining a discount above 2L (OTR) for the Technology with Matrix LED variant of the Q7. What was the amount of discount you were able to obtain?

Undecided on a Luxury Diesel SUV – Your Suggestions Please!

Dear BHPians,

I’m in the market for a luxury diesel SUV, primarily for long highway drives as I plan to explore India’s diverse landscapes.
Comfort, performance, and long-term reliability are key, as I’ll be covering thousands of kilometers.
Additionally, my parents, who are in their late 50s, will be accompanying me on some of these trips, so backseat comfort is equally important.

I’ve taken a few extensive test drives (~40 km each) with my mom, and here are our experiences with each vehicle:

BMW X5 xDrive30d M Sport Diesel
Performance: Adequate, though it didn’t deliver the adrenaline rush I was expecting when pressing the accelerator.
Handling: Despite its size, the car was easy to handle, and the steering felt light, especially in Comfort Mode.
Comfort: My mom was particularly impressed with the backseat comfort, and the overall ride quality was excellent.

MB GLE 450 4MATIC Petrol
Performance: The car is a monster, took off like a bullet with just a gentle tap on the accelerator.
Handling: This car had the best handling among all the ones I drove—very agile and easy to maneuver.
Comfort: According to my mom, the backseat comfort was on par with the X5, but I found the ride quality to be even more plush.

Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE 2.0 Petrol
Performance: The slowest among the cars I drove, which is expected given its smaller engine size.
Handling: It was easy to handle, offering the best visibility thanks to its elevated ride height.
Comfort: My mom really appreciated the comfort and visibility in the Defender. While the ride quality surpassed that of the X5, it fell short compared to the GLE.

Note: The dealership only had petrol test drive vehicles available for the GLE and Defender.

Pricing as of October'24
BMW X5 xDrive30d M Sport Diesel
On-Road Bangalore : 1.27 CR
Discount : 9.75 Lakh on Ex-Showroom

MB GLE 450d 4MATIC Diesel
On-Road Bangalore : 1.42 CR
Discount : Nil

Defender 110 X 3.0 Diesel
On-Road Bangalore : 1.73 CR
Discount : ~3 Lakh on On-Road Price

I look forward to your help and suggestions, TBHP Family, as I navigate my decision based on your experiences and expertise. If any members have driven the diesel variants of these vehicles, I’d love to know which one feels the most powerful. Additionally, current owners can share valuable insights regarding reliability and their overall ownership experience.

Are there any other cars I should consider based on my requirements?

Thanks in Advance
Sohail

I think the GLE ticks all the boxes but would it be worth Rs 21 lakhs more?

Even I’m leaning towards the GLE, as it is the most powerful of the three and offers superior comfort. I also really enjoyed the showroom experience and interaction with the SA at Mercedes-Benz. It felt like MB is more focused on enhancing the customer experience rather than pushing for a sale.

The only downside is the price difference compared to the X5. The GLE 450d doesn’t have any discounts, apart from a ₹1 lakh corporate benefit, and the SA mentioned there won’t be any additional discounts anytime soon.

Are you not open to petrols at all? At this budget I am assuming running costs is not a primary consideration.

Hi Sateesh, I want to experience owning and driving a diesel car while I still can. With the current government policies, I’m uncertain how long diesel vehicles will continue to be available for sale in India.

Re: Audi Q7 Vs BMW X5 Vs Mercedes GLE | Which Luxury SUV?

I didnt want to start a new thread on this but need some quick advice. I am torn between a Dec 2021 Jeep compass petrol S(O) variant and a Dec 2017 Audi Q3 diesel technology pack, both on spinny.

I had set my eyes on buying a compass and i only visited spinny to look for automatic (mandatory and primary reason to buy) compass and nearly zeroed down on this 21 compass but then test drove the Q3 standing next to it and my mind = blown. Just so you know, i am upgrading from a diesel ecosport.

Compass :
+ Looks brand new.
+top most variant. Has all the bells and whistles i would ever need.
+Only 18k.driven.
- Its petrol. Avg fuel efficiency shown on the car was 5.7 Km/l!!!
- Steering was rather tight and hard to maneuver.

Q3:
+ its 2017 car but was such a breeze to drive. Drove this right after i drove the compass and the difference was palpable.
+ Reasonably feature loaded.
+ Seems really well maintained. Couldnt spot even a scratch on the entire car. Definitely did not drive like 2017 car. It was butter smooth.
- When i braked even mildly there was this hard creaking noise (suspension?)
- No touch screen system. No android auto, none of the conveniences that are so common today.
- 48k driven.
-Unknown maintenance cost. For someone like me coming from a really cheap to maintain car like ecosport, this is particularly worrying.

My heart is actually set on the q3 but quite concerned about the reliability and upkeep on this car. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Get the Q3, set aside a lakh for annual maintenance. It will probably be lower. You'll enjoy it more than the compass since it looks like your heart is already set on the audi.
