Range Rover vs Mercedes GLS vs G Class vs Lincoln Navigator

Hi Guys, so my Range Rover got totaled a few days back after being rear ended by a pick up truck and now have to replace the vehicle. Confused between my choices but here they are -

a. Diesel Engine ( Best Thing Ever ) Insane mileage compared to competitors
b. Pretty much Sitting on a Throne
c. Ultra Luxurious

f. Prestigious
g. 16000 Miles Service Interval
h. The way it looks

Cons -
a. body roll
b. Seats 5
c. Adaptive Cruise Control is a gimmick, does work in stop and go traffic
d. Infotainment system has a learning curve ( Facelift models)

2. Mercedes GLS550
Pros
a. Mercedes Infotainment System
b. Interiors are nicer
c. Seats 7
d. Comfortable Ride
e. Autonomous Driving

Cons
a. Gasoline engine is thirsty
b. 10,000 miles service interval
c. Depreciation is going to be higher

3. Lincoln Navigator
Pros
a. Spacious
b. Autonomous Driving
c. Comfort
d. Cost of Maintenance
e. Seats 7 Adults

Cons
a. Doesn't come with Air Suspension

G Class -

You have not mentioned the place where you intend to use & no budget, since you have shortlisted a Lincoln, I take as USA.

1. Range Rover Td6
As you own the RR, you will know better than anyone else about the reliability. If you can live with it, I will happily pick this.

Mercedes GLS550
This will be my Second choice. It's new for 2020/ 21.

c. Depreciation is going to be higher
Compared with what? Range Rover - I don't think so.

G Class -
Interesting option, the new one in current form will by pick from the entire lot but this will be expensive to buy and run over everything else you have mentioned. But the experience is totally different and it gets some very nice & premium interiors and looks so different (for good).

a. Engine is thirsty for that much driving
With cylinder de-activation, you can get as high as 8kmpl.

b. Uncomfortable compared to other cars
Absolutely not, you won't miss the Air Suspension and the AMG 63 in particular has a very limited body roll.

No way, have you driven one, the newer from 2019 onward? If not, than do drive and write here. If you are referring to the old one, ignore everything I have mentioned above and completely skip this car.

d. No Soft Close Doors
Soft doors on the G-Wagon - that will be blasphemy, haven't you seen this commercial

Going by the number of pros written and the lack of 'reliability concerns' , guess you were pretty much satisfied with the Range Rover and is actually looking at it as a replacement.
Add how the competition doesn't offer much in diesels.

My choice would be the Navigator first, and then the GLS, purely looking at the daily driving cycle.

Re: Range Rover vs Mercedes GLS vs G Class vs Lincoln Navigator

In a twist of events ended up buying a BMW 7 Series due to no cars being available because of the lockdowns in Europe and a 745e was the only car available that was the most practical for my daily for now and had all the options necessary for me ( real seat package, upgraded surround sound system, autobahn package etc.) . I guess the SUV would have to wait till everything gets back to normal. Range Rover's have increased in prices by 20-30% for the used cars and new cars are in a backlog this pushing deliveries to mid to late next year. The G wagon was too much for a daily especially in regards to fuel costs and comfort. Navigator not having Air Suspension was a deal breaker since the ride is not as smooth as would have been with an air suspension. GLS is an amazing vehicle but lack of stock with the options I want and custom order taking it to mid next year again ended up being a deal breaker.

I don't think its fair to compare the GLS550 with the G63AMG. I think an ideal choice for you given the requirements is the GLS63AMG. While the G63 is great, it won't be as comfortable as the GLS for your highway runs.

@Turbanator- You seem to know a lot about the G63AMG, I wonder how

Hi Everyone! While the OP has already bought a vehicle but others in the same boat can try the new LR Defender - it's a whole new beast all together. I test drove one yesterday and came out highly impressed. Not only it's luxurious (although not in the same league as may be an X7 or GLS) but miles ahead than its previous avatar. And no reason to worry about off-roading prowess - it's a beast there as well!

Though I agree with you that the new Defender is fantastic, but buying a Defender after the Range Rover will be a big downgrade. I don't think anyone will like the Defender after being used to the Range Rover Vogue or Autobiography.
