Mercedes S-Class

Price: Rs. 1.33 - 1.37 crores (pan-India)

What you'll like:

• The best luxury sedan on sale in India. Period
• Cabin is incredibly opulent & comfy. It's quite the royal experience!
• Superb new inline-6 diesel is paired to a smooth 9-speed gearbox
• Air suspension offers a plush ride & excellent road manners
• Loaded to the gills with technology, equipment & gizmos
• 5-star safety rating & radar-based systems. Among the safest cars ever built

What you won't:

• No memory or cooled seats at the front. Seriously, Mercedes?
• Cost of ownership is only for the 'money-no-object' personalities
• Useable boot space is poor (no wheel well for the spare tyre)
• Owners report electronic niggles. Also, concerns over the air suspension's long-term reliability
• Not as much fun to drive as the BMW 7-Series
• Sadly, Magic Body Control is still not offered on the Indian S-Class

Thread moved from the Assembly Line to the What Car? Section.

Oh man, this thing launched a bit too soon I fear. The new Audi A8 D5 is out next month, expect deliveries August/september and first impressions/TD's next month also. I feel the S-class at the moment would trump every other car. But once the A8 D5 launched, the people who would choose the S-class could be persuaded to go for the Audi. Some new features on it make it the best car in the game. That Audi AI, is it called, lets the car read things up front and minimize your effort to drive. I highly doubt we'll get the fully loaded car, but a fool always hopes.

Other than that, I would personally vote for the 7 series as its still the best drive out of the five cars here. Much much more involving to drive. Whereas even after a decade, the XJ L still looks stunning. The only car one would buy out of pure desire.

7 for the drive, XJ for the looks and S-class/A8 for the toss up. I'd rather be chauffeured around in the S-class/A8 to get to my 7 where i can drive till my heart fills.

S-Class anyday.
Comfort would be the only thing that I would be looking for if shopping for this bunch of sedans and none of them does that better than the Benz. So I'd just walk over to the dealer and book one without question.
Having driven the XJL and 7 series, the former felt better to drive so it would be something I'd would consider if it wasnt too old. I feel only mercedes has got the point of what this segment is about. Dont know how the A8 will turn out to be. No point in sacrificing comfort for handling or dynamics. Anybody rich enough to buy one of these would have enough cash to buy a Mini Cooper too. Just saying.

For me, it's no contest. The S-Class which I consider to be the absolute best luxury sedan in the world. Even though the 7-Series is more fun to drive, I'd still pick the S-Class for its grandeur.

Let's wait for the new A8 too, although the Audi has always trailed the Mercedes & BMW IMHO. The XJ is too old to even be considered today, while the Lexus is ugly & overpriced.

Voted for the S-Class. Sheer Class. Get it? :)

It's the opulence that counts when you're buying luxury and no one does it better than the granddaddy S. No one ever has. Till date.

Although I'm a die hard BMW fan, there is no doubt in this segment I would pick the S-Class over the other three options anyday because of the decade old established name in india, and partially having a childhood dream to own one. Plus, the new engine (350d) in the S Class takes the refinement and performance to the next level over the pre facelift and the interiors exude class like no other. Lovely car.

The only right answer : Toyota Century :D

If only it were available outside of Japan

Voted for BMW 7 Series. Your choice of a car also reflects your personality. And there is a little doubt in my mind what I am like when it comes to choice between S class and & 7 series.

S class sure remains the epitome of the luxury though.

I voted for Lexus LS not because I like it but because I am bored of the model philosophy of the Germans. Take example of S Class, you pay 3 times the money of a C class and both look almost the same. Yes the S is longer, wider but a for many it would go unnoticed. Heck I myself had tough time differentiating three, only recently did I decode that C comes with single DRL strip, E with 2 and S with 3. Same applies to BMW and Audi, all appear like stretched version of their smaller siblings. The XJ looks classy but is too old. The Lexus is too garish and outright expensive but among the sea of Germans, it spews a breathe of fresh air. The current Merc SUV line is something I like, The GLA/C/E/S all look so different and differences are clearly evident. Probably had Merc made the E and C look more different, I would have ended up voting the S!

I voted for the Lexus. Exclusivity, refinement and the fact that its Japanese seals it for me. I have never been a fan of the Europeans. The styling is rather eccentric too and somehow, Lexus/Toyota seems to strike a chord for me.(Maybe I'm just like them:D-Boring, simple, and straight forward and no one understands why you bought a Liva/Lexus over the Swift/S Class but you)

Voted for the BMW 7 Series. We have consensus that this car is the best one to drive, and who we are? We are car enthusiasts who would prefer the pilot's seat over the luxuries of the back seat any day.

Voted for the A8, for it's understated elegance and technology laden classy interiors (not to mention the later Transporter movies' influence :D )

I will never be able to afford any of these cars or for that matter most likely will never get to ride in one either. That said something about big cats excites me so my vote goes for the Jag
