re: Tata Safari 2.2 - Life beyond 65k kms

Sir, you drive all the way from Pune to Siliguri and dont even post a small description of your trip. Not fair, please do so asap.

By the way, any new issues with the truck?

well it was sudden plan

I am back home with truck now done shades over 35K

Nothing major issue with it, except that its shaken a bit over poor raipur-keonjhar stretch so some bushes etc.

Regarding service light which occurred during trip.. Nothing major but code P2299 Does it ring any bell to anyone ?

That is more than earth's radius sir .

Any particular reason for avoiding Nagpur->Jabalpur ->ALD ->GT Road ? I think that would have been shorter?

re: Tata Safari 2.2 - Life beyond 65k kms

Surprised there is no snow at all in Nathu la!

Looks like the problem you reported earlier with the clutch has resulted in the slave cylinder failure during your trip to Sikkhim?

Did you find any difference in FE when different fuels were used - say, Shell vs. IOC vs HPCL vs BPCL. And did you use high-performance diesel?

Ya, snow melted @ nathula

Not sure how to corelate the earlier clutch issue to broken slave plastic stuff cylinder. Any elaboration would definetly help.

It was bpcl, sambalpur which gave the best performance
Worst was reliance bunk prior to wardha.lots of engine noise. No ididnt even try the premium hsd at all, so no experience i can report.

I think clutch issue may have resulted in low FE this time

Time to get it reinspected i guess

Rahul

Life post the trip @ 355xxx

I am happy to report that post the ardous NH6 and a trip to Nathula @14200 feets, the only stuff which needed replacement was the rear linkage bushes. (We hauled luggage of approx 100kg plus)

I could have avoided the bushes replacement, but then there is no chance you can really baby any car on disastorous Nagpur-keojhar route on NH6. Those who have been on this stretch for sure know what I mean. Similarly, some of the routes from siuri towards kishanganj holds the same story.

Out of rear suspension, 8 bushes the main 4 were showing play as per workshop. Since the kit of bushes come with 8 bushes and costs the same whether you replace 2 or 4 or all of em and the same labour price applied, I decided to get all the bushes changed along with a healthy wash and clean, general inspection for approx 4k INR. Not bad i should say.

Clutch adjustment was done along with laptop to correct when its engaged/disengaged.
Alignment was done to correct left drifting of the vehicle.(as expected after return from this trip).
Rest all the oils are in order and none needed top-ups. All nuts and bolts are in order and didnt need any tightening perse.

The sad part is that the 2 of darn OEM BStones are wearing out, and in 15k approx would be rendered out of service.

Before the trip I had a tire sidewall slashed/stripped approx 3 cms (flyby stones i guess since i returned from earlier dec09 trip, the tread is still very good and i bought a tube for it so when one of the oem tires does go out i use this one with tube) so i replaced it with the same BS tubeless with 3 yr wrtny,as I didnt want to take a chance with that on this trip anyhow. I am glad I did so.

Now while at service station, I saw that one more tire wall had a flyby encounter with a chipoff on where BS is written. Darn.

I guess sooner or later based on tanveers and others feedback, i would go for tires which rough and tough.

Continentals anyone ? How is your feedback on them now Tanveer ?

One thing i must say here that the engine has become very rev happy and its a delight now for sure.

Here's wishing my safari many more thousand KMs of troublefree motoring to come before it see the ....
(Workshop.. fingers crossed)

PS: I got the JDPower sticker on my safari (as its under that program now)

Highways and City life @ 37K

I was thinking today about writing this up as to approx how much issues my safari has seen in last 18 months overall driving in cities and on highways.

The rough calculations say that the steed has seen approx 50% of Pune City driving and rest 50% on Indian SH & NH Highways. I mean overall drivability of the vehicle.
  1. Driving Issues faced on Highway's - Only 1 that is the broken clutch slave cylinder repaired FOC under warranty.
  2. Driving Issues faced in city - Only 1 when clutch started acting up & had to be replaced
  3. Other Issue's - I have lost the count for to say. I guess apathy from the dealer in solving them eg. wheel alignment other stuff.. always on a reactive side.
  4. Imp: Brakes : Changed prior to Nathula trip, i have still the older ones they have life of approx 10k. Never dissapointed till date. Have learnt to steer under heavy braking situations as well. ABS ?? not sure on the gravel atleast or tarmac and rain wet roads yes..
  5. Birthmark Issue's - Jerks in 3rd gear @ 45kmph. Pathetic BS tires from factory. Replacement is under consideration now. By 45K I would want to replace all 4.
  6. Cost of ownership - Initially it was a little higher on the side. (AFAIK, i dont have excel time to track it. I wish I had from the spare side and initial frequent oil changes I insisted.) and I guess it still on the higherside, but if I dont travel to TASS for petty issues, then it may even out eventually. The other aspect is the rising Diesel Fuel cost. My benchmark to calculate is around 1.5 lacs minimum.
    1. Someday will ask TASS to print out the total service history and the costs
    2. Hella's cost is known.
    3. Diesel would be calculated on avg out price.
  7. FE - Initially used to worry about it but then it was always steady never below 11 so to say. On highways always above 14. But now I dont bother coz the benchmark is set. When in city the halfway mark on FG gives 300+ kms on highways its 400+. Anything less now is a worrisome thing.
  8. What else - a demand for few accessories
    1. VKOOL for Front Windshield
    2. Seat covers
  9. Hoping to find some extremely good quality wax to wax and forget for at-least a month. Its Black colour remember ?
Reclaiming..

re: Tata Safari 2.2 - Life beyond 65k kms

Hi Rahul, I must say that was one amazing ownership report of the Safari.

I came across your thread as I am doing my research on the Xylo Vs Safari (Xylo - VFM and Safari - All time favorite SUV).

Wish you many more kms of happy experience with the behemoth...

Cheers,
Rahul
