Leak is there always, but due to expansion it becomes minuscule when engine heats up. On cold engine, the leak is more.
They put a compression guage. I don't have the exact numbers now, but will get them..
Its happening for one cylinder only

However if there is any issue, the white elephant gets a complete new engine block(head and bottom).

So fingers crossed. Looks like this may take a weeks time in case the engine warrants a replacement.
Tanveer I was about to update you , The service Advisor at Concord Bangalore had similar diagnosis ( Leak due to faulty injector washer) for this problem when I discussed with him.

Even the diagnosis here was same. Faulty injector washer. When washer was changed, problem went away for 500kms, then came back.
The pressure shows 20 bar for one cylinder on cold engine, and as engine heats up it keeps rising(due to seating and expansion)
Other healthy cars show 24-25 on the guage(though the exact pressure should be 26+-1 measurable by a precision uber expensive guage)

So they are fitting the head, and they will check the pressure. If everything is normal I will be given the car on a "watch basis".
However if this ghost of compression comes back, then a new engine will be needed.

Inspection of the bore has revealed no issues at all, since the leak was very minor, and it happened only on cold engine.
Should have the complete picture by today evening.

TSK - hope this resolves the issue eitherways. I know what a pain it is to be constantly haunted by a nagging problem with your beloved vehicle for months!! Keep us posted.

This seems to be an engine replacement season for the Safari. I suggest you take the bait and push for a new engine for the white elephant (literal & figurative).

Glad TML was able to find the leaky valve and thanks to the compression test this came out.

Tanveer, here's wishing you Good Luck.

Well the engine block seems fine, so its more like half engine replacement only.
Rest I will get to know by evening!

Looks like your beast will be a great candidate for case study on Safari troubleshooting . I am surprised why compression test wasn't done before. Isn't this one of the usual suspects in case of erratic idle (combustion problem)?

Wish you all the best. Hope you get your truck back all hale and hearty soon.

The work was done at Automobile sterling. Will get her back by around 4ish today.
They are changing injectors also along with the head, just to be sure.

They should make changes one at a time, if they want to isolate the issue but the again its India, no point in breaking our head over it. As long as they fix it, its fine.

well sir if you know history if this thread there are too many one at a time changes to isolate problem , I do not think now either TSK or TML has patience to do one at a time change any more

+1.

In a modern car, I read somewhere, engine alone has about 500 components. Add fuel system, intake, egr, ecus, battery, instruments... the list of variables will easily be in 1000s. Now, replacing one part at a time will take 1000 changes. One change a day makes it almost 3 years to cycle all variables. That is only a layman formula. If you add all possible permutations the days would be boundless. TASS is being smart, at least they are changing bunch of things together- saves time, you see.

Even god took millions of years to realize that humans would do better with only two legs earthed. Still we are not bug free, e.g. armpit hair. TASS is just a human after all. Sorry, it was completely off topic. Being a Friday evening couldn't resist the temptation of some banter

@Tsk
How is your beast responding after the skull surgery? Eagerly awaiting some update.

Cheers,

She is fine now. but I am wondering. If after 500kms the problem resurfaces, and the second cylinder shows compression loss.... Will they get the bottom part of the engine from Tata or get a whole new engine?
