I've had the service light come on several times on account of bad fuel. In most cases revving the engine and then topping up with clean fuel solved the issue, if not it meant removing the particle filter/sedimenter and cleaning it out. In my truck (one of the earliest 3.0s) this was a problem because you had to lock the front wheels to one side, reach under the plastic wheel-well cover and feel for the filter, but in later 3.0s and 2.2s they relocated this filter to the back, just under the fuel tank - much easier to locate, remove and clean + you dont run the risk of burning your hand.

I've also had the service light come on initially when we went into higher altitudes really fast, when the ECU did adjust for the pressure difference and the vehicle needed a smoke break (for the driver) - switching it off for a minute and switching it on again caused the ECU to take fresh readings, I guess. This issue however was sorted out in one of the later ECU updates and didnt appear again regardless of altitude.

Then of course the last time my service lights came on I got into a lot of trouble. Still have to update my LTR with the details

In my case in the hills I descended from 2000-800 meters pretty rapidly, and the service light gave a couple of blinks.
One more tankful later, this is all gone.
Heck, she returned 17kmpl. I am shocked. And during the entire run I hardly used 5th gear, just 4th gear 60 or 3rd gear 40!
On my next trip I will try to drive at 5th gear 80 and see if I get 20kmpl.

LOL, also try 5th gear, 65 kmph and see if she starts returning diesel!

Tried that, the rpm is a tad too close to 1200, so no go. I guess at around 70kmph+ at 1400-1500rpm should give the best mileage

This is a 2 tonne truck, not an Indicab.

if a safari starts giving around 22, everybody will stop buying indigo, logan or fiesta and stretch their budgets to buy the safari. even the civic hybrid will face tough competition.


i am not challenging you buddy nor intending to offend the safari club here, but the safari giving more than 17 kmpl seems highly unlikely to me. the 2+ ton weight, brick like aerodynamics could be the reason. cmon, the figures can be gained by a fiesta or logan which is half the weight or slips through air more easily, again if driven with a very light foot.
the second reason for saying this is my safari consistently gives 13 kmpl on highways with AC, without AC, it improves to 15. it always driven sedately by my brother. when i drive it (not-so-sedately!) with AC on highways, i get around 11 kmpl.
if i am wrong, then my safari's tank is leaking or i dont know how to calculate FE figures!

With extreme light foot the verna/fiesta etc., can give 40kmpl, and this happens usually in mileage runs. With foggy driving at night at 1500rpm in 4th gear I got 17kmpl. Of course in regular driving, I get around 12-13kmpl in highway because I do not drive with a light foot.
with mountain driving I get 10+kmpl. and ditto for offroading excursions.
For both my vehicles I enter every tankful/other expenditures into a spreadsheet, so that I know the actual long term FE.
Even harjeev once got 16kmpl when he was doing mostly 80-90kmph in 5th gear.
So 17 is not a very difficult figure to achieve

Anyways here is my spreadsheet, with details of every expense. The 17kmpl was on the last tankful.

Just check posts by others.Many have said they have got 15plus.

i even got 15 with my 3.0 beast while i did the Delhi-Mcleodganj trip,so what the heck.

so i trust a new vehicle and that too 2.2 will surely return very good mileage on long runs.

You better check your method of calculating or your driving.

Depends on how one drives, I guess.

I for one have never got more than 12-13 on my truck, while others who have driven my truck have claimed 15+.

Now I have a person driving it who claims 8 kmpl, which I thought was ridiculous because the truck has never returned sub-10s consistently.

So it really depends on the way you drive. If you drive like I do, which is maintaining consistently high speeds throughout (not pedal to metal acceleration runs), then it will consume more fuel because I keep shifting gears to maintain the speed/momentum.

If this person is a hired driver who is also incharge of getting the vehicle fuelled, you might be getting cheated.

When ever i get my car washed, the cleaner guy asks me "mileage kitna deta saaab?".

I guess we are making too much fuss about mileage of SUVs (safari's and scorpios included). When we own such huge vehicles should we really care about mileage. It makes more sense if there is discussion on maintenance issues/costs of such vehicles.

Totally agree. I have even managed to achieve more than 17 on more than 1 trip and my long term fuel economy is 12.54 to a liter.
The best and worst that Ive achieved is 18.04 and 8.49 on highway and city.
