great to know you. judging by your signature, I can assume that you are a collector and a lover. And 2 Palio S10's! What are their nos.?

Anyways, I am going to check out a 2002 Palio S10 which has done 48000 kms. Any advice on things that I should pay special attention to before finalizing the deal?

hi Jay, I went and saw the Palio S10 today. The car suffers from some scratches all around itself. But you can expect that from a 10 year old. It has done 48000kms.

The points that I noticed:-
  • The acceleration was seamless and good
  • the gearshift was smooth
  • the clutch felt good
  • the exterior paint was wearing off at some places
  • there was one dent on the left back door of the car
  • the mirrors in the side view mirrors did not seem original
  • Most of the electricals seemed to work, could not check the working of the rear defogger though
  • the left wiper was not working
  • the tyres are in an almost worn out condition
  • the silencer is original but was "phata hua" (almost sounded like a rally car)
  • The car probably still produces atleast 85 of its original 100hp
  • The AC seemed to work fine, but the owner asked me not to put the thermostat on max cold as it then freezes the condenser
  • There is a screeching sound from the right rear shocker, the owner says it just needs oiling
  • The seat angle adjuster of the driver side had come off

From the above points I need to ask:-
  1. Is it possible to source an original silencer of the S10?
  2. I could not make out why the AC condersor freezes on max cold! Any ideas?
  3. The right rear suspension, will it need replacement or just oiling would work?
  4. Any other specifics I should pay attention to?
  5. What is the right price for this car and is it worth going for?

I will also probably have a mechanic check that car out next weekend.

1. Available - all 1.6s have the same silencer / endcan - OEM part may cost 12k INR

2. Though it shouldn't happen, you can set it at a position lower than Max Cold

Read more here: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...oblems-11.html

3. Replace, if required - change both sides' at the same time.

4. All Belts replacement - was it done? atleast Timing Belt should have been replaced (irrespective of the kms covered)

5. for a 48k kms car (1.6 & S10) i think 1.75~2.10L INR is good.

1.I guess S10 is having a chrome tipped silencer.I don't think you can get the OEM S10 silencer again.
1.6 silencer is available.
2.Yes..it may be true. Freezing problem is there on most palio's as far as i know. so it might actually help.
3.I am not sure about the sound but even replacing it for a new set will not cost you much. Its better to replace it as its already 10yr old and 48k done.
4.Use your contacts to find a good palio mechanic in advance. If you have a good palio mechanic then nothing like it.
you can get help from PUG members also.
Make sure there are no major problems in the car.
5.Nobody can provide you the right price for this car.Its for you and the S10 owner to decide. Main thing is on what purpose you are buying the S10? Is it for driving pleasure or just a car for day to day driving??
S10 and GTX has their own set of followers/admirers for guess what????

Its a 10 year old car and you need to spend a little bit of money to restore it to a good condition.
If the car is good just go get it.
btw:Car seems to be good from whatever points you have mentioned.

I thought S10s had a slightly different end can, with the exhaust tip angled a bit to the left?

The endcan is same just that L-shaped shiny tip is an add-on
