My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

Car Details
Hyundai Getz crdi 1.5 GVS MT (Midnight Grey colour)

A little History
The two cars we had before Getz, were the M800 and the Santro.

You can find the complete details in the below links:

M800https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/long-...uti-800-a.html (Our First Car - The 1988 Maruti 800)

Santro - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/long-...fore-xing.html (Hyundai Santro – King before the Xing)

Well, things started to get interesting after the year 2008, with me having a good experience of driving and with a zero-accident record(touchwood), my Dad and me were both on top of the world. Dad was happy as he got a free driver, car cleaner, car scratch remover…etc. Basically, he didn’t need to take any tension for any matter relating to the car.

I was happy as I loved to do all these things. Taking 1-2 hrs to clean the car, using home remedies to remove scratches, using coconut oil(it really works), taking the car to service and staying there to observe everything being done to the car. Thinking I am an expert driver, I almost started to drive in a rash manner. Dad, also stopped saying anything to me, seeing that I have a good control on the car and of course, when he is in the car, I used to drive like a gentleman.

How did Getz come to life?
So now, suddenly after 8 years, of upkeeping the car in pristine condition, with a few scratches and dents (Thanks to Dad ), I somehow got bored of the car. We also incurred some heavy service costs, like change of clutch, AC overhaul. Etc. Also, me, my elder brother, my mom and Dad, all were working, so financially we got a little comfortable, therefore the boring angle came to picture.

Well, I wanted to upgrade to the Verna which was recently launched, but my Dad was like, it’s too big and bulky for the limited parking space we had. So, obviously the next best thing for either the Getz or Accent. I was so happy with Hyundai, that I didn’t even look elsewhere. Also, the CRDI technology was making headlines, with Verna’s excellent pickup and good mileage discussions, in most auto magazines. Seeing that the 1.5 CRDI engine was now fitted to a smaller hatchback (Getz), I was very much interested to check out the acceleration. Also, most of the auto journalist had named it the “poor man’s Ferrari” or “Road rocket” with the ability to reach 0-60kmph within 4.5 seconds, it was “FAST”.

Though I didn’t get a chance to test drive it, I was lucky to sit in one of my friend’s Getz CRDI. I was head over heels for the car. It was a little expensive (6lakh for a hatchback? in 2008) and Dad needed some convincing, but lucky me!, we did buy it eventually. We had a lot of issues with the loan approval which caused a 2-month delay.

Had many other plans, for long drives, but I was young and had to take permission for all long drives, so couldn’t do the Delhi-Leh and Delhi-Kerala dream drives.

Likes
• Ride quality, if you have not sat in a Getz, you will never know. Its has a magic carpet feel. Every Getz owner will surely agree
• Performance – 0 to100 in 8.5 secs. Is there anything else to say? The Jet-thrust effect(235NM torque @1900 RPM), which banged your head to the headrest each time I accelerated.
• High speed stability – Phew!!
• I loved the “Getz Prime” look, not the older “Getz”, it had a boxier look.
• Space inside, headroom, legroom, shoulder room, it had easily more space than any other car in its segment or even higher.
• The gears were silk, never drove another car with such a nice shift feel.
• All round visibility, as the dashboard and steering was low and the driver always has a bird eye view.
• 4-star safety rated car in 2008 was a big thing.
• The only Hyundai Jeremy Clarkson liked and also compared it to the VW Golf.

Dislikes
• Brakes. It had the brakes of a scooter, used to overheat in minutes. Off course I was cruel to them as well.
• FE – well can’t complain on that, but other diesel cars, like swift and Punto were getting much higher (18+kmpl)
• It had a blistering pickup in a straight line, but its dynamics were poor, I had a close shave many times, on turns and high-speed lane changes.

I am also attaching a video of my road rocket – Smoothy(Pet Name). In the video, I have shared some funny incidents and how I convinced my family to buy this road-rocket.

And now coming to all the photos

ISSUES
  • No major issues. Once, I think, the power steering fluid leak started from under the steering wheel, but it was fixed by Hyundai A.S.S. on the same day.
  • Brake pads were a regular change for my driving style, so it was basically my fault and not the Smoothy's fault.

We kept the car for 4.5 years, with me being the primary driver. I still miss the car even now (12 years later). It had an X factor which I cannot explain and have not seen in other cars that I have owned. We bought the car for 6lakhs in Delhi and sold it for 3.6 Lakhs after using it for 4.5 years, which sounded a good deal if you ask me.

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

What a coincidence that I was just rummaging through the Team-BHP archives last night looking for any and all stories related to the Getz CRDi, it randomly popped up in my mind and off I was deep into the rabbit hole of surfing the classifieds for a used one. Most cars are in a rather sorry state today though and after going through all reviews here, I think I want to experience it for a drive but would I want to live with that much power and NO ABS?! Hell no! Thank you for sharing your story though it was a great read

Your post reminded me of my Getz which was sold in 2015, it was a petrol one. Quite a spacious car for its size.

AFAIK Getz Diesel does 0-100 in around 11 secs.

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

I have Getz Prime Petrol for nearly 7 years (2008 to 2015). Man, what a car it was. Best space management, I have ever seen any any sub four meter car, whether it is rear legroom, boot space or shoulder room. Jazz was second best. Best suspension and chassis combo, second best to Polo. Best visibility all around, no competition here. Though ride and handling was not that great. After Getz, I have bought I20. Though it has lot of features, it lacks the rear seat comfort of Getz. I always thinks, that why Hyundai has launched I20 in place of Getz. They should have kept upgrading Getz, by keeping it's basics (Space & Visibility) intact.

Your post reminds me of those days and many trips which we have done in Getz. Thanks for sharing.

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

Thanks for sharing this. This was one of the cleanest looking Hyundais' of that time. I especially like the post facelift front. And coupled with that potent drivetrain, I am sure it would have been a hoot to drive.

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

Thanks for bringing back some fond memories of our 2008 Getz Petrol MT, was too young to legally drive it back then but it was the first car that I actually drove (sat in the drivers seat while my brother pushed it into the parking spot , good days)

Cheers

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

Thank you for bringing back the nostalgia!

The Getz definitely had an 'X' factor as the OP rightly said, only a few people with that taste got this car while the Swift ruled the sales charts at that time. It was one spacious car with proper mature European looks. My very first manager had one and it was so good that one of my colleagues bought it from him when he wanted to upgrade.

Incidentally, I got his joke forwarded today.
A photo of a guy wearing goggles and smirking with caption:
"I bought my boss' car on EMI today, now I have a car and job security"

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

I had a Getz in petrol version. Nice car with a little less kmpl average and the old issue I would was that the front cup holders were too shallow and the glasses kept falling regularly.

Otherwise a perfect car, well planted and rock solid stability even at triple digit speeds.

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

An 18 year fuss free ownership, European looks, confidence inspiring ride & handling, spacious, mini tank like build with annual maintenance bills not exceeding Rs 5000

My profile handle reflects nothing but love for my 2005 1.3L Getz GLE petrol manual

The perfect common man's union of Polo + Toyota in hatchback version

I exchanged it for a Creta in 2023 and the new Getz owner continues the drive experience with his family

I still see many Getz traversing around South India, with owners who surely appreciate the Pocket Rocket to this day.

Went through all the responses. A big thank you to all for sharing your experiences.

I hope to see more Getz Petrol and Diesel owners join the conversation.

Also, please do share pictures of your rides as well.

While the Getz didn’t sell as much in India, it was one of Hyundai’s best-selling models in Europe for a long time, thanks to its practicality and reliability.

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

Hi Guys,

I was plesantly surprised to bump into this thread. I was one of the last batch owner or maybe the last Getz CRDI model.

I was looking to replace my Swift petrol in 2009 and after driving my friend's Getz CRDI , I was blown away by the sheer power and straight line acceleration and road manners. Come 2009 and the prices in Bangalore was reduced to INR 5.45 lakhs from INR 6.60 Lakhs. When I went to book one, I was told that the supply was stopped and only some 300 odd units were being manufactured . I was disappointed by this and later forgot about this .

After a month or so, I got a call from Trident Hyundai that one of the vehicle was available as the person who had booked this cancelled it after knowing that it was soon to be discontinued and changed to I20 . Immediately went ahead with the advance booking by swiping my card on the spot and was able to get the CRDI model without any choice of color - which was Modern Grey.

Finally took the delivery during September 2009 and got to know that it was the last Getz CRDI delivered in Bangalore.

I had a superb time with the car and did some additions in due course of time which included Alloy wheels with Yoko S Drives, 4 channel Amp & subwoofer. Later even upgraded with the Racechip and free flow air filter. It was a hoot to drive in traffic. It was so crisp and easy to drive. I had driven the car for nearly 1.45 Lakh Kms which included most parts of South India.

I had maintained it till 2022 before parting with it as I was finding it difficult to maintain due to rusting issues ( I was getting it washed every day ).

My son was using it for his college post covid days and there was'nt a single dent or any major scratch till 2022 !!

It's very nostalgic for me every time I see a Getz CRDI and miss it so much. I still get to see its images from the Karnataka Traffic Police website as its present owner keeps it busy violating signals

The second image was taken while it was given off and the last image was of the replacement Nexon diesel with the same Registration number !!

Well, your Getz surely looks fab. The colour looks similar to mine, but a lighter shade of grey. I never knew Getz came in two grey shades, (Modern grey and Midnight grey).

Mine was (Midnight grey), which used to be like a chameleon.
  • In day time it used to look dark Grey,
  • In the evening, it used to look dark blue
  • and at night, it used to look black.

You are one of the luckiest petrol heads alive, getting your hands on the last Getz CRDI.

I don't see any other hot hatch with the straight-line performance similar to Getz CRDI, possibly due to the weight factor(not sure).

Punto Abarth
Polo GT or GT TSI
Baleno RSy
Tiago JTP

I think Polo GTI will be surely faster, but its 5 times the cost.

Re: My Pocket Rocket | Hyundai Getz CRDI

Nicely summed characteristics of the pocket rocket by the OP. Any Getz CRDI owner will relate to various pointers in the thread.

After 5+ years of ownership and multiple long hauls, I had to let it go. Had Hyundai plonked in good braking system, would have made it a lot safer and enabled me to keep it for much longer.

Here is my adrenaline rigged account of ownership.

So, when I saw billboards in early 2008 this car being launched in India – I booked it immediately and was handed over one of the first few Getz CRDi gems Hyundai churned out. Earlier cars were allegedly CKDs, and it took a couple of months for Hyundai to have major localization in place.

After breaking in the car for about a couple of months, I could wait no longer and had my first long drive Noida – Mussoorie. Then it all began, and I did multiple legs like Noida – Manali – Rohtang, Shimla, Mussoorie, Nainital - Ranikhet, Binsar, Jaipur etc.

Getz space and road mannerism were great. Engine with a meaty torque and power band was always rearing to explode. A step on the pedal will push the car menacingly and as a driver, one is suddenly aware of the need to keep car in line. Things start moving so fast!

That brings me to a very big miss from Hyundai on that car – No ESC, EBD, ABS or passenger airbag, nothing, nada. Needless to say, I switched to wider tyres, soft rubber to do what I can do about it. The car used to make short of steep inclines on the mountains and we suddenly started saving an hour (or two) for short 6 hours drives without much effort.

3M Ceramic Coating: I had also got 3M ceramic coating and nice alloys done which added to visual appeal of the car. Engine was mostly silent and when driven with a light right foot, bliss for munching early start miles / late night drives when family is partially having some Zzzzs.

Totally agree with you. I think the biggest flaw of the Getz CRDI was its brakes. They used to fade away in minutes. It couldn't stand even 10-15 minutes of rough city driving. They would just overheat and stop working. Very unsafe.

Now, that I think, it just needed "brakes upgrade" with "ABS" and it would have been a killer hot hatch till date to take on the likes of Polo GT or even Punto Abarth.
