Hello Shashi,

Hope you're doing well. Many congratulations on your latest acquisition!

It's been a while since I have frequented the forum and almost missed this jewel of thread. I have gone through your initial ownership report and was simply amazed at the pains that you've gone through to make sure that the delivery goes as per your stringent requirement.

I would say that it reads like a bible of what to do and what not to do to ensure that the dealer's delivery/sales/service personnel don't bugger up the car while preparing the car for delivery.

I'm also doing some initial research for a vehicle for my parents and somehow was not keen on Maruti products owing to their less than stellar record on safety and average build quality however I must say I'm somewhat impressed by this particular car and on my next trip back home would definitely have a closer look at the car.

I wish you many thousands of miles of safe driving and look forward to your updates on this thread.

Drive safe & congratulations once again!

Thanks guys. The car isn't mine, but is within my family. But since I'm not it's primary user, I don't think I'll ever do justice with the thread, even if I make one. I get to drive it once a month at max.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

@leoshashi, thank you for all the in depth information.

My XL6 has finally (apparently) arrived. It's been a little over 4 weeks since I booked it, the dealers told me they didn't have it in stock. Last week they called and informed that we had been allocated a car, but were unable to share VIN/engine number - on my insistence, they emailed a half number - thanks to all the knowledge I gathered from this community, I pointed out that the VIN number they'd provided was incomplete, and requested for a complete one. They informed me that they would only have access to it once it arrives in their stockyard.

Today the RM sent me the VIN number - I decoded it (again using resources from this fantastic community) and found out that it was manufactured in September!!!!! That's a month (and possibly half) before I even booked the car - Should I perceive this as a red flag? I did read that 2-3 months old manufactured car should be ok, but my concern is the wait - do manufactures ship vehicles later? Another possibility that occurred to my mind was that the dealers probably had multiple deliveries lined for Dusshera - diwali festive period and probably pushed ours to later since we weren't in a hurry necessarily. But my question still remains, is the lapse in time a red flag? Should I be concerned.

I had told them ( again, as per everything I read here), that I'm neither paying anything more than the booking nor handing in my old car till I physically inspect the vehicle prior to registeration (I'm going for this inspection to their yard tomorrow) , my finance is ready for disbursal - only awaiting my consent, my down payment is ready and so is the old car. My RM called me today and informed me that complete payment will have to be made prior to the registration - without which they can't register - is this correct or is this a pressure tactic?

I'm a little concerned about what happens if I pay them entirely tomorrow (if the car passes inspection) and then some damage occurs prior to delivery .

I have already read most things on inspection that this rich forum has - but if there's anything I need to keep my eyes peeled, please do suggest.

I hope I'm posting in the right thread, if not, moderators please feel free to move to appropriate thread.

Thank you all once again for this rich plethora information , makes me feel more empowered while making a decision.

Many congratulations. I believe you have taken delivery already. Do post pics of your car.

This looks like a more probable explanation. Shouldn't be a cause of concern if rest of the car is fine. Do check it closely.

My dealer has a 75% policy before registration. Dealers do it for their safety.

This is where pics help and you can always refuse delivery.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Fatigue and Negligence caused this:

After driving whole day, when I finally reached my house, I ended up brushing the XL6 against a pillar. Thankfully, the Ugly cladding did its job and saved the metal entirely. After some TLC, it's not visible from far, but the deep remains. Will get it changed sometime later if I feel like, have procured the parts. Approximate cost is around Rs. 600 for 2 trims.

After application of Meguiar's natural shine protectant:

This is how it looks today under flash:

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

First Engine oil change, DIY: Necessary, absolutely not! Overkill, may be. But I am someone who prefers clean oil in my engines always, and this being the oil which saw the running in plus some spirited red lining, I was all the more eager to drain it.

I had procured a can of MGO Shell 0W16 almost when I got the car. I had other items like Oil Filter, drain bolt gasket in my stock since they are common across most Maruti Petrols, including my 800.

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20201129_060531.jpg

Notice the 68K00 Filter. This is what comes from the factory:

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20201129_060541.jpg

Draining was an easy affair due to placement of drain bolt and filter. Since I have Engine cover below, I had to unscrew 5 screws so that access cover could be removed. It has a fixed end over which the cover swivels.

Engine cover is a hit, all access holes lined up as if it's designed for my car. Not a drop of oil touched anywhere while draining:

I then left the car overnight for all oil to drip.

Today morning, installed new oil filter, crush gasket, plugged the drain hole and torqued it to 35Nm and the car was ready to accept fresh oil:

I was in Bokaro recently and I always get my car washed there because of the quality job they do. It's within the premises of BHPian BlowHornOk's plot, so it's an added advantage of having a nice chat while your car is being attended to.

Thick suds by Meguiar's HyperWash:

With BHPian BlowHornOk's immaculately maintained 2017 Ford Aspire:

Very frugal: I'm easily averaging 18-19 kmpl, measured by Tankful to Tankful method.

Hope to get 2nd Service done soon, just for the records.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

It was a pleasure to meet the XL this time. First thing I noticed was the length of the car. It was not fitting in my parking completely .

The comfort at middle captain seats is a thing to experience. While it was smooth and silent at normal revs, it was sounding sporty and a bit raspy when the throttle was smashed. Was able to experience the "pinned to the seats" feeling. The low end torque is almost diesel like and there is no need to feather the throttle everytime.

The best thing that is added is the engine cover. The engine bay looks very complete and full. The engine is quite far from the grill and I can't imagine a XL 6 without this cover now.

At the end of the day we washed it and it was a pleasure to see the water repelling effect and zero swirl glistening paint as if it just rolled out of the factory.

Boot rattle fixed: In many cars like City, Ciaz or my own XL6, where number plate is located on the boot door, it often makes a racket when shutting the door. Many BHPians like Saket77 and BlowHornOk pointed it out and recommended using double sided tapes.

I wasn't sure about using double sided tapes since I may need to remove the frame someday(say for cleaning) and it will be a hassle. I was looking for a cleaner solution. A cushion which lifts the frame a bit so that it sits tight. Well I found exactly the thing needed for the job.

It's a conical cushion which has adhesive at one end. Its used as a door cushion in Maruti 800. I had few of them lying around so decided to try it out. Cleaned the area where it needs to be applied and pasted it on the boot door, such that it lifts the number plate frame a bit. It has restricted the movement of frame, and has successfully controlled the annoying rattle.

Shashi

2nd Free Service Done: Was an eventless affair. Since I have construction going on at my place, decided to visit dealer this time. No complains, no job was needed. However the chaps checked everything diligently. Cleaned the Air Filter and Cabin filter. I opted not to get the car washed since I was running on a tight schedule. Service and all formalities were done within 30 minutes.

They did propose sanitization charges, which I politely refused. However they sanitized all touchpoints before entering and leaving my car.

Re: My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review

Very happy with the mileage I got on an on going trip: Since I actively wanted to avoid any congestion in Bihar, I left quite early around 2AM. Roads were largely empty and it was a smooth cruise where I covered 300 km in 4.5 hours- Epic if we consider the road conditions we have here. However as dawn broke, congestion appeared and the last 90km was covered in 3 hours.

Still got stupendous fuel economy. As it can be seen, have covered 387 km in ~40% fuel. All this when I wasn't actively looking for fuel efficiency and was driving normally.

Congratulations on your ride. Hope this helps:

My first car: 2020 Maruti Suzuki XL6 Alpha MT Review-20200822_160312.jpg

Also you may experiment with your pressure, a 1-2 PSI increase won't hurt. I'm maintaining 30-31 PSI with my slightly upsize wheels.

************************************************** ***

Meanwhile, I was determined to see how much the XL6 can run on a full tank with my normal driving style. Managed to complete 800 km easily with still ~10% fuel left. Range(DTE) on MID is 103km. There were two people and a boot full of luggage on board all the time. The car could have performed better, if not for the three insane traffic jams I experienced.
