re: Maruti S-Cross 1.6L | Addictiveness Personified | EDIT: 110,000 km up!

Hey there fellas!

So the car has been chugging along without any issues and there came the 40k KMs on odometer.

Maruti S-Cross 1.6L | Addictiveness Personified | EDIT: 110,000 km up!-img0331.jpg

Got the 40k paid service done at Bimal yesterday and service experience was pleasant as always. Apart from recommended fluids & filters replacement, front brake pads (MGP make) were replaced as they have lived their lives. Rear brake pads (SGP make) are looking solid for another 20k kms.

Since Bimal does not have the line tester for suspension test, we quickly decided to do a test drive by taking 4 medium built guys working in the service area

The 15 minute suspension test drive was on non-existent roads, with unscientific humps & speed breakers and involved some hard braking too. After this test drive we were convinced that suspension is in excellent condition and the new brake pad is working like a charm. If this wasn't enough, also got a 10% discount on parts and 15% discount on labor for being their valued customer

Attaching the bill for reference. In the end, I remain thoroughly satisfied both with Car and Maruti's service experience through Bimal.

re: Maruti S-Cross 1.6L | Addictiveness Personified | EDIT: 110,000 km up!

Its been quite sometime since the thread was updated but hey no news is good news isn't it?

Blame it on my professional commitments, driving has reduced a lot in the past 7 months and is pretty much used just to commute to office during weekdays and on weekends only if its absolutely unavoidable.

Sometime back in May'19 while in hometown, I was told the line tester was available at Nexa service. So went ahead and did the suspension and brake test as the same was not available at Bimal back in December'18 during the 40K KMs periodic service. Report details are shared below for reference where the odometer reading is at 45953 KMs. While I may not be able to fully explain the technicalities of the same, I was told both the suspension and brake test came out with flying colors and there is no need to worry about replacing them as they are perfectly fine. I do have some videos of these tests, let me know if anyone is interested in seeing them here. Will upload when time permits.

During this time, I also decided to get the below essential upgrades done at 3M. The cabin feels much nicer now even under extreme hot weather conditions.
3M-CR70-Five windows - Rs.16195/-
3M-CR70-Front Windscreen - Rs.7388/-
3M Nomad Mats - Black - 4692/-

If these expenses were not enough, there came the insurance renewal at the end of 3rd year ownership, which costed Rs.24003/-. This was a zero depreciation comprehensive policy for 8.44L IDV.

Just when you think of some unavoidable expenses, maintenance of the car etc. an hour of highway drive in the 1.6 makes you forget everything and you will start looking forward for many such drives again. And during one of those highway drives there came the magical 50K KMs in 3 years and 1 month to be precise which made it even more memorable. Its been a trouble-free smooth ride so far to the extent that my friends often make fun of me stating its a manufacturing defect that nothing wrong has happened to the car until now.

Having been lucky so far, i wish this stride continues for many more years to come as its very very hard to find a replacement for this gem of vehicle.

50K KMs service update (50045 KMs)

Just when we thought everything was going so well, there came the first shock-errrr the rear shock absorbers.

The technician at BIMAL while doing service found seepage in rear shocks and suspected they might need to change it. After all the essential fluids, filters and rear wiper blade were changed, we went for an extensive test drive and could hear noise from the rear shocks while going through the humps. Thanks to the extended warranty, rear shocks were replaced at no cost based on technician's recommendation and the car is back once again in top-notch condition.

ICE Upgrade :

They say "Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good and just and beautiful".

So on that note for the Moral law we decided to get the Morel . Yeah the new series of Morel which is called Morel Maximo Ultra

Moreover Morel's are among the best choice of components as they are most compatible with stock head unit and the output is really pleasant. They sound neither too bright nor too low and are just as perfect as one wants it to be.

A little bit of history & Credits - I had no budget and wasn't very keen on ICE upgrade at all, so it was sort of an impulsive decision. Credits to a small gang of super crazy friends who literally pushed me to do this upgrade but it turned out to be a nice one in the end.

The initial idea was to :
  • just do the damping,
  • then okay lets do the front components without adding an amplifier
  • and then one fine day one among those friends who upgraded to a 5 channel amplifier with sub-woofer was generous enough to donate his 4 channel JBL GTX series amp and also gave already run-in sweetest sounding Alpine coaxials (previous generation ones). Mind you both the amp and coaxials were in mint condition. So one really needs a big heart to giveaway them at no cost.
  • so finally we ended up with STP damping sheets, Morel components and tweeters at front, 4 channel JBL GTX series amplifier and Alpine coaxial at rear.
So from literally Zero budget I ended up with overall expense of 35K which included 7k for STP damping sheets, 16k for the Morel components at the front and 12k for a very professional install at TopGear. Of-course the ICEing on cake was freebies in the form of free JBL amplifier and Alpine coaxials. Now you will have some idea as to why I call them super crazy friends!

Okay enough talking i guess, so lets get some pictures for your viewing pleasure. But before that some reality to show how things looked in the stock form. No offence meant to anyone but i feel so embarrassed to post the pics of stock speakers (more like Ahuja speakers) with the magnet size of Re.1 coin. Heck i don't even have the courage to post these in the free giveaway thread. (pun intended)

But just for comparison and awareness, here goes out the infamous stock speakers and yeah those 2 little things that you see are unquestionably the stock tweeters.

re: Maruti S-Cross 1.6L | Addictiveness Personified | EDIT: 110,000 km up!

Happy Wednesday fellow bhpians.

Its been a long time since this ownership thread was updated but better late than never right.

I do apologise for missing in action for almost 5 yrs since my last post, but ever since pandemic struck globally, other priorities took precedence so didn't get a chance to keep this thread updated.

Anyways ever since my previous update on 50K KMs in July 2019 and ICE upgrade during September 2019, i would like to give a brief on what has happened so far and how the car and I are holding up in case you're interested to read further.

At 60K KMs - Got Amaron FLO battery and a better sounding horns, 3D mats for the boot along with periodic service.

At 72K KMs - First set of Michellin P3STs were replaced with new set of Michellin P4STs tyres and they are excellent in comfort and durability. These are good for another 35k kms easliy. Along periodic service, boot balancers and one of the rear parking sensors were replaced.

At 80K KMs - Added Leather steering wheel cover with Red stitching from Karlsson as stock ones had worn out.

Maruti S-Cross 1.6L | Addictiveness Personified | EDIT: 110,000 km up!-steering-wheel.jpeg

Maruti S-Cross 1.6L | Addictiveness Personified | EDIT: 110,000 km up!-karlsson-2.jpeg

To summarize, its been an amazing journey with the car so far except for one occasion where the clutch bearing gave up on a trip to hometown. However this was quickly sorted due to Maruti's excellent service network while we were on the road. Not sure if any other manufacturer will be able to match the same level of service with such simplicity and efficiency. So a BIG kudos Maruti's service network.

Just to give a background, a week into having done 80K Kms service, I noticed few symptoms of gear shift being difficult from 1 to 2 in the morning / every cold start on the first move. A couple of shifts later and driving a few kilometer distance the gear shifts would become smooth as if there were no issues at all.Further, the downshift to second gear would also require effort beyond what was usually needed. The first up shift was difficult and got progressively difficult in a few weeks. The up shift from second to third was just okay, but was not smooth as it used to be.The down shift from third to second was would not slot smoothly and required some effort. I should not have ignored these symptoms and should have fixed it before starting our trip. Anyways good lessons learnt and having shared this experience in a timely manner with few fellow bhpians and friends (@sudeepg) who own S-Cross 1.6 was of immense help and an eye opener to all.

Although I was happy with the clutch bearing being replaced while on trip, I proactively decided to get the following changed during the subsequent periodic services at BIMAL and they were promptly done to keep the
car in top shape mechanically.

At 90K KMs - Flywheel, Clutch assembly, Clutch operating cylinder, front and rear break pads. Spare parts were available immediately at BIMAL with just ONE day of advance notice.I never faced any delays with availability of spares.

At 100K KMs -Timing Belt and entire kit including the water pump. Front shocks were also replaced now that it had served for us for 1 lakh KMs usage since car purchase.

At 110K Kms - Rear shocks and front lower arms. The rear shocks were replaced last time under warranty during the 50K KMs service.

Ohh btw, the car still returns an impressive mileage when driven in legal speed limits. The current odo reading is ~109500 KMs

Maruti S-Cross 1.6L | Addictiveness Personified | EDIT: 110,000 km up!-current-odo.jpeg

At the same time the car also lives upto the famous quote of GTO's - If it is S-Cross, it has to be a 1.6 engine. Each time you take out the 1.6 engine and floor it, you will have this wide GRIN on your face That's what makes the car special...that's what makes the S-Cross enjoyable. So in a nutshell its like the best of both worlds - an European car fun backed by Maruti's dependable network for maintenance.

Maruti S-Cross 1.6L | Addictiveness Personified | EDIT: 110,000 km up!-oback-right-34.jpeg

While keeping S-cross 1.6 in excellent condition and thoroughly enjoying its power on tap it offers, I've also secretly booked a new car and eagerly waiting for it to arrive. Did i just whisper I'll let the 1.6 go, as I've just only one covered car parking and a second car is not needed. Well then you heard it right!

All I can say is, the lucky buyer (fastest finger first) can have a peaceful ownership as he / she need not have to worry about changing any critical parts in the near future.

I shall be updating the classifieds section and BHPian-owned cars for Sale thread shortly. All the exterior pics of the car in this post are taken this morning for your viewing pleasure.

What was the issue with the gear box / shift?
What and how did you go about resolving the above?

No issues with the gear box, it was the clutch bearing which was replaced during the trip itself at one of the Maruti's authorised service centers. As I mentioned earlier, after this I did proactive replacement of all the important clutch, flywheel, timing belt parts due to the vast information about the 1.6 on many threads on T-BHP where it is clearly documented and information exchange from many 1.6 owners.

@keynote, if I may ask, which car are you getting next?
I own an S-Cross 1.3. It’s currently in its 9th year of fuss-free ownership. I have been looking for my next car but not able to find a worthy successor. There’s not a single thing in the car I dislike, apart from may be the engine noise.
I have looked at cars upto 50L. I can’t find a car that offers everything- comfort, reliability, safety, ease of maintenance & practicality. Tucson has come the closest but I want to avoid CKD/CBU cars (have read some stories on Team-bhp itself where service/repair took a lot of time due to unavailability of parts).
Being a proud owner of S-Cross yourself, it’ll be informative to know which car did you choose. Thanks in advance.

Sir, I'm one of the contestants of the "fastest finger first" competition

I work as a Third Party Inspector and Certifying Engineer at a leading classification and survey company in Mumbai. Most of my time is spent offshore on various Oil Platforms and installations. With what little time I have on-shore, I was looking for a tough, no-nonsense Diesel rocket just like the 1.6 S-cross. One of the few cars from Maruti's stable that I absolutely adore. Eagerly looking forward to your ad in classifieds and exercising my trigger finger so that I can click on it before some else does

I can’t find a car that offers everything- comfort, reliability, safety, ease of maintenance & practicality.
Being a proud owner of S-Cross yourself, it’ll be informative to know which car did you choose. Thanks in advance.
Congrats on your Scross fuss-free ownership Yes it is indeed difficult to find a worthy upgrade from Scross once you're used to the drive quality, the fun that it offers in terms of 1.6 engine, and the dependable service network from Maruti. It wasn' that easy for me either test driving various cars for the last 6-7 months across multiple segments before making a decision.

Fellow bhpian friends abhinav.s, kpzen, sudeepg, lovetorque, VigKey, VCM and few other friends helped me greatly in arriving at this decision. Most of these gentlemen mentioned here own Scross 1.6 currently and want to retain it as long as possible even if they buy another car in the near future. Isn't this just awesome to hear?

Wrt my new car, we are just a few days away from taking delivery, so stay tuned to this thread. Hopefully it will be worth the wait. Hint : I booked the car on 24th June (24/06/24) and just like the Scross the new one too is one heck of a car that punches above its weight

Sharp eyes there but it was purely a coincidence and not planned. I concur with your thought process though as it would have been great to see this 1.6 gem of an engine in other cars too.

Aveoman19 - That's not just an intersting handle but you've an interesting profession too. To be honest, you're the 5th individual who has reached out expressing interest in buying my car. As mentioned in the classified section, I'll be happy to give it to someone who knows the potentional of this car and as long as it is to the direct buyer. Please connect with me over WhatsApp chat 9980045569. I will be happy to answer any queries you may have.
