Re: Got BHP...at last! Thanks for the compliment.
Honestly speaking none of us is a Mechanical Engineer. My father could not complete his graduation due to lack of funds and guidance. But he is the one who can overhaul anything including his scooter engine, Old VCRs (of course they are extinct now), TV, Inverter, Watches (yes he learnt watchmaking too), Electrical appliances, fittings and so on. I have never seen any mechanic/technician entering my home. My father has never been on a ship though.
I pursued B. E. Marine from Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata which is 70% Mechanical technically. Our communication is mostly centered on IC engines and vessel route/operations nowadays. He was amazed when I first showed him pictures taken during Engine decarbanonisation. Lowering a 2 Tonne piston in a 700mm bore using crane.. is a sight to behold indeed.
My current ship has two Main Engines that are used for propulsion and 4 Aux Engines coupled with alternators that generate electric power at 6.6 kVolts.
Main Engine specs are: 2 stroke, 5 units, inline, Turbocharged, Tri Fuel (Heavy Oil, Marine Diesel oil and CNG), 700 mm bore. Make: MAN B&W.
Aux Engjne: 4 stroke, 9/6 units (2 engines for each), inline, 2.7/4.2 MegaWatts capacity, Turbocharged, Trifuel, 200 mm bore. Make: Wartsila
