Got BHP...at last!

Hello BHPians

I am Ankush, 33, based in Indore. Being a Marine Engineer by profession and choice, I am writing this intro while sailing on a LNG tanker riding on two engines rated 16,200 BHP each, in the midst of somewhere in Atlantic Ocean

Born and brought up in the city of Tajmahal, I inherited a technical bent of mind from my father who is one of the best engineers I have ever seen. My fascination towards Physics in school transcended into passion for IC engines in college which further culminated to my transformation into a BHPian.

As a child I belonged to a family with modest resources which owned a Maruti 800 and incidently it happened to be my first love. After turning into an independent sailor, I have owned a Spark, Santro and Swift Dzire.

My latest gizmo is a Nottingham labeled Rayleigh bycycle which I bought during my previous leave and is truly helping me in reinventing my childhood days now.

I am also planning to buy a compact SUV soon. I have shortlisted few condenders and their appraisal is under process currently. I will post a detailed feedback after purchasing the car and the factors that prompted me to go with it.

After following the forum for about a decade, it dawned on me recently that I have been extracting information out of this minefield all these years without contributing to it in any way. That's not sustainable for sure..

Mods, I will try my best to be a resourceful BHPian and contribute towards taking this forum to scale new heights.

Thank you.

Welcome, Ankush !

The the title of your intro thread is very TBHP-ish ! And the line about riding on two big engines throws up another interesting picture in the mind.

So what are the chances that both you and your dad are mechanical engineers ? And how are your discussions with him about the ships ? The closest I have come to ships is a walk-around inside from end to end, in one of our mid-size war-ships. Do share your experiences - would love to hear about these beautiful machines.

Hope you enjoy your journey !

Re: Got BHP...at last!

Thanks for the compliment.

Honestly speaking none of us is a Mechanical Engineer. My father could not complete his graduation due to lack of funds and guidance. But he is the one who can overhaul anything including his scooter engine, Old VCRs (of course they are extinct now), TV, Inverter, Watches (yes he learnt watchmaking too), Electrical appliances, fittings and so on. I have never seen any mechanic/technician entering my home. My father has never been on a ship though.

I pursued B. E. Marine from Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata which is 70% Mechanical technically. Our communication is mostly centered on IC engines and vessel route/operations nowadays. He was amazed when I first showed him pictures taken during Engine decarbanonisation. Lowering a 2 Tonne piston in a 700mm bore using crane.. is a sight to behold indeed.

My current ship has two Main Engines that are used for propulsion and 4 Aux Engines coupled with alternators that generate electric power at 6.6 kVolts.

Main Engine specs are: 2 stroke, 5 units, inline, Turbocharged, Tri Fuel (Heavy Oil, Marine Diesel oil and CNG), 700 mm bore. Make: MAN B&W.

Aux Engjne: 4 stroke, 9/6 units (2 engines for each), inline, 2.7/4.2 MegaWatts capacity, Turbocharged, Trifuel, 200 mm bore. Make: Wartsila

Please do comment if you need more information on it.
