| Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2019 The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an annual hill climb event featuring all kinds of motor racing vehicles held in the grounds of Goodwood House, West Sussex, England. The 2019 Festival Of Speed was held from the 4th to the 7th of July. The cars are divided into batches and an event day consists of hill climbs attempted by a particular batch. These were the batches this year -
Other events -
Special events that were included this year -
Highlights of the 2019 FOS -
The Aston Martin DBR1 race car finished in classic British racing green.
1. De Tomaso P72 (Read More) Built to celebrate De Tomaso's 60th anniversary, the P72 has been designed to pay homage to De Tomaso's 1960s P70 prototype racer that was built in partnership with Carroll Shelby. The new team wanted this to be a "modern day time machine" capable of transporting the driver back in time to a more analogue age (check the interiors). Surely, one of the most unashamedly curvaceous designs we've seen in many years, a deliberate return to the flowing forms that permeated the 50s, 60s and 70s before things got all wedgy, sharp and digital in the 80s. 2. The reborn Porsche 935 aka Moby Dick (Read More) The modern-day 935 was born as a track-only beast based on the hardcore version of the 991.2 and conceived to celebrate the brand’s 70th anniversary in September 2018, but it’s only now that we get the chance to take a good look at the race car in action while it climbs the Goodwood hill. 3. Ferrari P80/C (Read More) A Ferrari one-off based on the 488 GT3 racecar - this is its first public debut after four years in the making. It is most likely to have the same engine found in the 488 GT3, a 3.9-liter twin turbo V8 that reaches 660 hp. 4. Ford GT Mk II (Read More) The most powerful version of the Ford GT is here. It's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 bumps a total output to somewhere north of 700 horsepower (522 kilowatts). At 150 mph, the car generates 1,800 to 1,900 pounds of downforce, which is more than what the car weighs. The $1.2-million dollar car isn't street legal and also isn't easily enterable into any particular racing series. Just 45 of these GT Mk II models will be produced. 5. Ferrari Monza SP 2 (Tbhp thread) FOS 2019 saw the debut of the Monza SP 2, although both the SP2 as well as the SP1 were unveiled in late 2018. A 810 cv V12, it can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.9 seconds. 6. The new Porsche 911 RSR is the ultimate racing version of the 991.2 GT3 RS. (Read More) Porsche says that the new 911 RSR is 95% new and is powered by a bigger 4.2 L flat six-cylinder engine that churns out 508 bhp. It will make its race debut at the season-opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Silverstone on 1 September. 7. The Electric Harley Davidson bike - LiveWire (Tbhp thread) The LiveWire has an ‘urban’ range of about 177 km. It claims to deliver 359 km in the city. The LiveWire can do a 0-100 kmph spring in 3.5 seconds, making it one of the fastest Harley Davidson motorcycles ever. What about the sound? Definitely not loud and also, it's kind of weird for a Harley. 8. Roborace's Devbot 2.0 (EV) [More] The electric car that performed an autonomous hill climb. The company put YouTuber Seb Delanny in the cockpit to drive part of the way up the hill to an area where most of the action is. Once there, he got out of the car and waved goodbye as the DevBot 2.0 carried on its merry way continuing up the hill with nobody onboard. 9. Audi R8 LMS GT2 (Read More) This new Audi R8 will have more horsepower (640) than the GT4 version (495) and the GT3 version (up to 552). The GT2 series will be added to SRO’s European and North American race series. 10. 2020 Porsche Taycan (EV) [Tbhp thread] 670 hp, a travel range of 500 km on a single charge & 0 - 100 kmph in under 3.5 seconds - Taycan is in it for the long haul. 11. Extreme-E Electric Off-Road SUV aka The Odyssey 21 (Read More) The ODYSSEY 21 has a stated peak power output of 400kW (550bhp), 1650kg of weight and will accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. The EV is to be featured in "Extreme E", an upcoming racing series that will see all-electric SUVs competing in extreme environments around the world. 12. The new Radical Rapture (Read more on the soon-to-be road legal Rapture) A flagship road-legal sports car designed and built especially with track weekends in mind. It's engine is a 2.3-liter turbocharged I4 from Ford. With an output of 350 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque, it might not seem like all that much. But since it's designed for both regular road and track use, it should be accessible to both experienced drivers and rookies. 13. Aston Martin Rapid E (EV) [Tbhp thread] Powered by an 800-volt battery system with 65kWh capacity, the Rapid E will offer an output of 610PS, 950Nm of torque and a top speed of 155 mph, with a sub-4-second 0–60 mph time and a 50–70 mph time of just 1.5 seconds. | re: Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2019 14. Honda E Prototype (EV) [Read More] The electric motor provides 148 horsepower and an instant 300Nm of torque which enables this adorable runabout to reach 100 kmph in around eight seconds. With a turning circle radius of only 4.3 meters, it was born for the city. It gives a range of 200 km (from its 35.5-kWh battery). 15. 2020 Mclaren GT (Read More) The first true Grand Tourer in its lineup, the Mclaren GT is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that can crank out 620 ps of power, 630 Nm of torque and can take the GT from naught to sixty-two in 3.2 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 326 kph (203 mph). 16. 2020 Land Rover Defender (All available information at this Tbhp thread (Scoop! Next-gen Land Rover Defender spotted testing in India)) 17. Aston Martin DBX Prototype (Read More) Expected to be launched with the AMG’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 (heard in the video below), the DBX will be one of the most expensive SUVs on the market and will inherit many bits and pieces from Mercedes, including some of the switchgear and the electric architecture. 18. 2020 Mini John Cooper Works GP (Read More) Under the new JCW hood is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine which produces 295 horsepower. As with its predecessors, the 2020 Mini JCW GP will also run in limited production numbers. According to Mini, only 3,000 units will be sold in total. The production version of the hot hatch will be sold in 2020. Meanwhile, while still in the testing phase, the new JCW GP will continue to make rounds in the Nürburgring. 19. 2020 Lexus LC Convertible (Read More) Previously shown as a concept, the topless version of the striking LC coupe is now on its way to production. The new convertible is expected to have the LC500 coupe's 471 hp V-8. 20. Mercedes-AMG A45 S - 422PS of power and 500Nm of torque - these figures make the A45 and CLA45 the most powerful four-cylinder production vehicles in the world. (Tbhp thread) 21. The new Bentley Flying Spur (Read More) The third-generation Bentley Flying Spur gets a new chassis, suspension, a reworked W12 engine and eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Much of the new Flying Spur’s set-up and componentry is shared with the Continental GT, which was launched last year. The 6.0-litre unit produces 626bhp and 664lb ft of torque, accelerating the car from 0-60 mph in 3.7s (0.7s faster than its predecessor). The top speed is 207mph. 22. The new Bac Mono R - With 26kW more, 25kg less, and a more advanced construction, the new BAC Mono R is powered by a Mountune-developed 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, which produces 254kW and redlines at 8,800rpm. It is the first production car in the world fully incorporating the use of graphene-enhanced carbon fibre in every body panel. When the rubber meets the road, the car is able to accelerate from 0 - 96 km/h in 2.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 274 km/h. 23. Samsung's Remote-controlled 5G car - Samsung's remotely controlled 5G car has been developed in association with Vodafone and Designated Driver. Based on a Lincoln MKZ, the car was being controlled from a different location by drift champion Vaughn Grittin Jr via a Samsung Galaxy S10 and a Samsung VR headset. 24. 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 (Read More) The all-new 718 is capable of 420 Horsepower, which is about 35 more than the third generation Porsche 981 Boxster/Cayman, its predecessor. It’s 4.0 Liter engine, the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and various other components were pulled right from the Porsche 911 GT3 race car. 25. Morgan Plus Six The Plus Six is the first all-new Morgan since the Aero 8, revealed 19 years ago. It is powered by BMW’s latest B58 in-line petrol turbo six, producing 335bhp and driving through an eight-speed ZF paddle-shift automatic. SHOOTOUTS (Complete results of the Timed Shootout and that of the Rally Stage have been attached as PDF files) It took 20 years to break the Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb record. And it happened twice in the same weekend. The new record holder is the Volkswagen’s ID R electric race car. The vehicle, driven by driver Romain Dumas, broke the record by completing the 1.86-kilometer track (1.15 miles) at Goodwood in 41.18 seconds. Dumas then broke his own record the following day by completing the track in 39.90 seconds. This race car is a testbed and a flagship for Volkswagen’s ID electric vehicle platform. The previous record at the famous hill climb was set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld, who was driving a 780-horsepower McLaren-Mercedes MP4/13 with a combustion engine. Heidfeld completed the run in 41.6 seconds.
For those of you who are interested and have the time, here is the entire 1 hour long "Timed Shootout" video - The Drift Competition that was held across 2 days - (time to turn the volume up) The shorter Supercar Shootout (Winner - Ford GT Mk2) - Does anyone like donuts ? Bikes, bikes and some more bikes ! The 2019 Festival of Speed also celebrated the career of Michael Schumacher, with his famous cars, family, friends, team-mates and former rivals coming together in a tribute to Formula 1’s greatest record-breaker. A vast array of cars - from Jordan, Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes - were driven up Goodwood's hill, but it was naturally the machines from the House of Maranello that were at the forefront of the colorful homage. This year marks not only Schumacher’s 50th birthday, but also the 25th anniversary of the first of his seven Formula 1 World Championships. The event also celebrated Sir Jackie Stewart's remarkable motor racing career, during a year that marks half a century since the Scot won his first Formula 1 World Championship and when he will celebrate his 80th birthday. Goodwood had a number of Stewart's most famous cars on the event's famed hill climb course including, naturally, the Tyrrells in which he became a household name. He, himself was seated in his 1969 Matra, while his sons, Mark and Paul were in his 1971 and 1973 Tyrrell cars, as they performed the hill climb. 50th Anniversary of the Porsche 917 - One of the most impressive themed displays of them all was a celebration of the Porsche 917, no fewer than twelve examples were present including the 1970-71 Le Mans 24 Hours winner and the 1970 Daytona 24 Hours winner. Videos of some of the craziest things that happened during the FOS 1. The Kamaz Dakar truck - This 10-ton truck has a 12.5 L diesel engine that produces 980 horses. A 16-speed automatic ZF transmission provides power to all four wheels, allowing it to reach speeds of over 100 mph. Watch this incredible beast climb the Goodwood hill and burn rubber at the Drift Competition like a boss. All that torque could actually make the earth spin backwards. 2. One of the most aggressive hill climbs this year was performed by 17 year-old Oliver Solberg (son of the former World Rally champion, Petter Solberg) in his Citroen DS 3 WRX. Now this how you do a hillclimb !! 3. 108 year-old flamethrowing Fiat S76 aka 'Beast of Turin'. It was built in 1910 with a colossal 28.3-liter engine to go chasing the land-speed record. It never managed to break the record on a two-way pass, but still won an unofficial stint as the world's fastest car and plenty of hearts at Goodwood. 4. The Ferrari-engined Toyota GT4586 - What a show-off ! An American driver with a Japanese chassis and an Italian Engine on an English road. 5. Mad Mike's 800hp Lamborghini Huracan drift car - just outright insane ! A fun video made by RedBull which features the Mad Mike Huracan & the above-mentioned Kamaz Dakar truck competing for a parking spot at Goodwood. Look at that 10-ton truck jump over the Lamborghini ! 6. A V8 Lexus RC F drift car swapped with the Toyota Tundra's 5.7 L. Purely eargasmic. 7. Terry Grant's two-wheeled F-Type hill climb was one of the key show-stopping moments this year. Performing a different kind of "sideways" up the hill, this is how you never imagined an F-type to be driven. A Compilation of pictures taken from the event Siemens brought out its electric EcoBike chopper, designed and built by the Orange County Choppers team. The classic Citroen 2CV A 1930s Silver Arrow Ken Block's latest in his line of mad Hoonigan inspired vehicles is the Hoonitruck, an old Ford F-150 that's been completely stripped out. Steve Biagioni takes a 1,200hp 2017 Nissan GT-R for a drift up the hill Damon Hill driving former rival Michael Schumacher’s 1994 Benetton up the hill The new racetrack-bound Toyota Supra GT4 The All-electric Polestar 2 unveiled The Lotus Evora GT4 concept Many Pagani Zondas like this one showed up this year The 1970 7.6-liter McLaren M8D Can-Am (670hp) A timeless Gullwing The Goodwood Festival of Speed began its relentless climb 26 years ago towards today’s status as possibly the world’s greatest Motoring and Motorsport festival. The dominance of EV is very apparent this year. It probably won't be long before an All-Electric Goodwood FOS is in the cards. But, whatever happens in the future, festivals like these will continue to prove that cars are forever loveable, amazing and awe-inspiring in every form imaginable. Due to time constraints, I've only posted some of the photos and videos from the festival which I thought were interesting. And trust me, just the photos alone do NO justice to most of these cars. In order to truly appreciate them, we must watch & hear them rumble and roar up the hill in all their glory. Watching them live, undoubtedly, would make for an incredible experience. But since most of us can't afford tickets to England every year, we'll have to quench our motorhead appetites through mediums like these. I hope this little report has been able to quench yours. But of course the P72 had a totally different skin which, being all Carbon Fiber, should not attribute to too much of development work. Then again, I know you have your ears to the ground in the Hypercar world. I'll trust your sources. | |
