Formula One will stop awarding a point for the fastest lap from the 2025 season Formula 1 has announced that from the 2025 season, drivers will not receive an extra point for the fastest lap time in the race.
The fastest lap point was introduced five years ago. Under this rule, any driver who sets the fastest lap time and finishes the race in the top 10 gets an additional point. However, during the latest FIA's World Motor Sport Council meeting, the decision to eliminate the rule was made.
The fastest lap point will continue to be in place till the end of the current season. From the 2025 F1 season onwards, points can only be scored based on the finishing position in either a sprint race or the main race.
The introduction of the fastest lap point in 2019 did see teams changing strategies to either earn that single point or take it away from their contenders. Link to Team-BHP news
