F1 legend Michael Schumacher makes first public appearance since his 2013 skiing accident

According to reports, Michael Schumacher has made his first public appearance in over a decade.

Reports state that the Formula One legend attended his daughter Gina's wedding last week at the family villa on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

This is reportedly the first time Michael Schumacher has been out in public since his life-threatening skiing accident back in 2013. Since then, Schumacher has been looked after by his family at their home in Switzerland. The family has been extremely secretive about his condition ever since the accident, with no updates on his health to even their extended family members.

As per reports, the marriage was a heavily guarded occasion, with a focus on privacy. Guests attending the wedding were even asked to leave their phones at the entrance.

What an incredibly happy moment for the champion , and the Schumacher family. Keep fighting, Michael.

Respect to how they have guarded their privacy. If they don't wish for the same, I hope there are no picture leaks from anywhere.

It's good to hear that he is doing well. A decade passed and his legacy still awaits him but fate doesn't go as planned.

The sole reason, why I started to watch F1 races and eventually stopped including being addicted in between.

This man was a legend. Strikingly handsome,he could drive or what!! Sad he had that accident. The way his family has guarded him is phenomenal. Hope he recovers well and gets his due recognition in the limelight.

Cheers

This has to be one the best days in a long time for me as an MS fan. As much as we dont get to see even a picture of him, it feels good to know that he is well and fighting on.

Congratulations to Gina and the family. Nice to see the Schumachers have something to celebrate about. Saw a picture of the happy couple on Instagram.

Re: F1 legend Michael Schumacher makes first public appearance since his 2013 skiing accident

I have a contrarian viewpoint.

Everyone keeps saying “Michael keep fighting”, what fighting, the man’s a shadow of himself and most likely will never be what he was. It’s doctors, modern medical science and tons of money which is keeping him in the land of the living or merely breathing if I may say so. If I remember correctly Jean Todt also said in an interview that he will never be what he once was.

After the life he lived, is this life? What quality? Close to a vegetable, in fact being a vegetable is better because he couldn’t possibly know what’s happening, only the family will suffer. This way if his mind is somewhat there but his body cannot support it does anyone think he is happy with what’s happening and what his family is having to going through because of him.

The family/his wife must be mostly miserable and helpless that with all the money in the world they are unable to do anything to help him. Michael Schumacher might as well have died in that accident, everyone would have mourned for a period of time and things would move on as they invariably do.

I understand most will think of this as harsh or cold but instead think of/for the human being who’s going through this, death is freedom into oblivion from the prison of his body.

I am not a Michael Schumacher hater, I am one of his countless fans who has watched him in Formula 1 from the time he started out. I am merely thinking of him as a human being not the mega star as most of us would know him as and one who is living in misery and saddened by it.

In a way, everyone just wants closure. For most of us on the forum, F1 = Michael Schumacher. So, there's just that interest / need to know how he's doing, and either a) confirm everyone's worst fear that he'll never be what he was, b) be surprised with news that he's made a full recovery. (Between Todt's statement on how he'll never be the same again, Mick's remark that he can't talk F1 with him, and how his wife spoke about him in the Netflix documentary, I think they've told us enough without actually spelling it out).

It's just human nature.

Yes, it is grossly unfair to him and his family, and selfish on everyone's part to have to know how he's doing. Ultimately, we can only wish for the best for him.

Fans do deserve to know what exactly his state of health is ? He is someone who had a huge following and fans loved him, which is what made him a legend.

I feel really sad but also know how the family should be feeling being helpless. Still hope modern scientific miracles can improve his condition.

Philosophically, I agree with you. Sometimes it's better to not be that wealthy and to be able to prolong your life, at any cost, I guess.

I'd disagree. And I'm saying that as someone who watched almost every single race of his Ferrari years. When movie stars complain about invasion of privacy, I have no sympathy, since they do everything to seek fan attention and don't know where to draw the line themselves. But for sports persons, they are doing their job, they have a complete right to privacy off the field/grid, and after they retire. Especially someone like Schumi who didn't go out of his way to pander to the press or fans. In fact at one point of time he was probably the most hated man on the grid.

Just the fact that the press has had so little to work with over the past decade, spinning stories out of a couple of lines each time, indicates the stellar job his family has done protecting him. Personally, I don't want to know any more.

I still remember Ayrton Senna losing his life during this race

If he's walking, smiling and even holding his daughters hands, believe the entire credit should go to his wife & I'm so happy for him. I've read articles of her struggle even to the extent of selling their assets to keep her husband, our legend alive!

I wish Schumi is doing well and I'm glad he was able to attend his daughters wedding! Hope to get a solid update from her family when they're up for it. Respect their privacy too.

I think you should watch the Christopher Reeve documentary "Superman: The Christopher Reeve story" that was just recently released in the US. Or read up on his post-accident life. Here's a snippet of his viewpoint from his wiki page

Quote:
Who knows why an accident happens? The key is what do you do afterwards. There is a period of shock, and then grieving, with confusion and loss. After that, you have two choices. One is to stare out the window and gradually disintegrate. And the other is to mobilize and use all your resources, whatever they may be, to do something positive. That is the road I have taken. It comes naturally to me. I am a competitive person and right now I am competing against decay. I don't want osteoporosis or muscle atrophy or depression to beat me
Within a few hours after the accident in the hospital ICU, the man was 100% sure he didn't want to live on. Thankfully his wife prevailed and with some support from his close friend Robin Williams who got him to learn to laugh again, and hundreds of thousands of fans (letters), he changed his decision and decided to make the best of his situation.

--------------------

I admire the Schumacher family in their drive to keep their lives out of the public; and yet go through their family milestones with Michael as much as it is possible. None of us know what Michael wants. But the fact that he's still alive should count for something.

Re: F1 legend Michael Schumacher makes first public appearance since his 2013 skiing accident

Folks from Kerala will know this well. There is very famous Malayalam actor-Jagathy Sreekumar. He was widely considered one of the best actors ever-even compared to all the other superstars in the industry. He also met with an accident in 2012 and pretty much went into potentially the same state Schumacher is/was. Long period in coma, gradual recovery to some extent.

Unfortunately unlike Schumacher, his whole situation became news for the media. His progress was relentlessly tracked, pictures, videos everywhere. He has recovered just to the level that he can sit in a wheelchair, has some movement and basic awareness-nothing else. Needless to say, he hardly recognizes people and of course no where close to coming back to act.

In spite of this, he is made to do public appearances, taken to events occasionally where he sits on the stage, people fawn over him. They even made him act in a movie which was a sequel to one of his earlier films.

The intention of all this may be good, to try to get him back to normal, but for his fans, it is painful to see him in such a state.

From that perspective, what the Schumacher family is doing is perfectly the right thing. Fortunately for them, they are in the right place to do all this also.
