Rumour: Hyundai keen to enter Formula 1 by buying one of the teams

According to reports, Hyundai could be looking to enter Formula 1. Rumours state that the South Korean car giant is considering buying its way into the sport.

Hyundai currently competes in the World Rally Championship, having even won the manufacturer's trophy in 2019 and 2020. The Hyundai WRC team is managed by Cyril Abiteboul - former Renault F1 team principal.

While details of Hyundai's plans are yet unknown, its intent to buy its way into F1 could play to the likes of Formula One Management (FOM). In addition, the change in engine regulations from the 2026 season could also be an interesting prospect for Hyundai. Also, South Korea expressing interest in hosting an F1 Grand Prix in Incheon could prove helpful.

Hyundai is currently the fourth-largest car manufacturer in the world. It will be interesting to see the South Korean car giant on the F1 grid alongside brands like Honda (signed with Aston Martin), Ford (with Red Bull) and General Motors (with Andretti).

Would love to see Hyundai on the F1 circuit. As a budget brand, the 135 Mn budget cap could well transform into 2 or 3 times that.
Jokes apart, where will they buy in?

They wouldn't have trouble hiring drivers for the team, the typical Creta bloke on our streets has all the bravery and the skills to push their vehicle ahead of any other!

if there was an option to buy an existing team, Andretti would already have done that. Doesnt look like any team is on sale as such.

They are already doing well in WRC and should perhaps look at the WEC in terms of road relevance. Though even F1 is headed on that path, the WEC is much better to homologate parts in road cars.

Similar to VW group, Hyundai might stretch themselves thin by getting into all forms of motorsports riding on their current cash rich wave and regret later. F1 is not everyone's cup of tea.

Oh No!
They will be the first company to introduce projector lamps and dual tone horns in F1 cars. Without that how will their drivers drive and overtake??

If true will be a bi step up for Hyundai. And this can help to grow the esteem value of their cars as the first choice option.

With all the Andretti fiasco, I have doubts that it hasn't painted a good picture for potential entrants to F1. Even with the budget and the prestigious names of Andretti and GM couldn't find acceptance with the FOM. And even if Hyundai's entry is granted as an engine manufacture, which team on the current grid will partner with them? Aston Martin was fortunate to partner with Honda.

For Hyundai, the WEC is a better option. Start with the LMP3 and get the experience. Then they can move to the Hypercar category and the prestige it brings.
