F1 wants to bring back engine noise, even considering abandoning hybrids from 2030

Formula 1 is all set to implement a new set of regulations from 2026. However, the sport is reportedly looking into the future & considering its options post-2030 as well.

Speaking to select media, Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, hinted at drastic changes for the sport from 2030, even considering abandoning hybrid powertrains - first introduced in 2014. Domenicali stated that he wants to address the complaints from F1 fans about the lack of engine noise from the new turbo-hybrid powertrains compared to the old V8s.

The F1 CEO stated, "As soon as the 2026 regulations are defined, we will start to think about what the next steps will be, such as the 2030 engine." He went on to mention, "It is a personal consideration of mine, not yet shared with the teams, even if we have spoken about it with the FIA, that if sustainable fuels work, we will need to carefully evaluate whether to continue with hybrid (technology) or whether better solutions will be available."

While Domenicali hasn't revealed any details on the alternate options, reports do state that with the introduction of sustainable fuels, the sport could possibly bring back the popular V8s.

Talking about the upcoming 2026 regulations, Domenicalli confirmed that they will be ready well ahead of its June 30, 2024, deadline.

V8 with Sustainable Fuels. All I ask for.
Also, this isn't the first time Domenicali has voiced his inclination towards bringing back louder engines.

Currently, the Porsche Cup Cars that often accompany F1 races offer a more enthralling experience in terms of sound and drama. The current V6s are no slouch but the raw sense of speed and power of the older, higher-revving engines was something else.

I also think claiming road relevance is a farce. Half of all road-relevant tech is banned, and if I wanted to watch FE I would, so I'm also not very excited by the engine downgrade (and battery upgrade) for 2026.

Make the cars lighter and smaller, and open up the regulations a little to allow for more distinction between the cars. The budget cap should stay.

Also, I think the immense speed and sound of F1 can be captured better than is currently done. Just look at this video which captures how fast (and loud) the cars actually are.

Off-topic: You can see a track Tata Safari at 5:30 in the video if I'm not mistaken. I did not know Tatas were sold in Italy.

Reduce regulations and increase the excitement.

They should rollback all the changes to how it was in the 70s! I was not around but I have seen them videos. They should make it easy and more affordable for teams \ manufacturers to enter the race in the first place.

V8, V12 - bring it on.

Unfortunately they're trending in the opposite direction, making F1 into even more of a closed grid than it already is. The recent and very public spat between Andretti and FOM has brought that out into the open.

As much as I'd love to have a full-blown Wacky races type series where everything is legal and the design+engineering teams are unleashed to explore their full potential, it's not the 1970s and emphasis on safety is what drives a lot of the regulations.

Finally, F1 will head in the right direction ever since straying on a 'sanitized' path since 2014.

The FIA can take a leaf out of road cars like the LaFerrari and McLaren P1 which used hybrid to enhance their already mental capabilities yet retaining the screaming twin-turbo V8 & NA V12 engines. Best of both worlds in a carbon friendly yet atmospheric package!

I thought he would want to address the complaint about lack of real racing first!

I am liking the new direction world is taking. Merc is back in to ICE vehicles and has started producing their V8s and now F1 looking at bringing back V8s, will surely push Audis and BMWs in the right direction. Car manufacturers are disoriented nowadays.

Hope they bring back refueling too. Adds another element of drama to the racing.

More noise means more excitement and it would be a better experience for the crowd attending the race.
