F1: Ferrari tests tyre spray guard concepts for wet conditions at Fiorano

According to reports, Ferrari has completed testing two tyre spray guard concepts for Formula 1 cars in wet conditions. As per reports, the test was conducted at Ferrari's Fiorano circuit, with Ferrari's reserve drivers Oliver Bearman and Arthur Leclerc - brother of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, at the wheel.

The tests included two concepts, the first was a solid cover over the tyres with holes at the front and rear. The second concept, however, had a spoke-like design. The two concepts are part of FIA's push to find a way to improve F1 cars running in wet conditions. Reports mention how F1 cars throw out huge amounts of water spray in the wet due to their aerodynamic design. This results in safety concerns due to the lack of visibility for the car behind.

Before Ferrari, both Mercedes and McLaren had tested a different concept of the spray guards last year at Silverstone. The concept tested by Ferrari though, covered more of the wheel than that tested by the two UK-based F1 teams.

Reminds me very strongly of Bullet mudflaps (you know, the ones with a tiger's face on them)

Spray from the tyres can be covered, but these ground effect focused cars generate so much downforce from their floor and diffuser, the spray during wet conditions from that is far more severe and impedes following/passing. Only the blinking light at the back helps the chasing driver in wet conditions.
