General Motors has officially registered to be an F1 power unit supplier from 2028

General Motors recently announced that they have officially registered with the FIA to become a Formula1 power unit supplier, starting from the 2028 season. The company also expressed its commitment to supply its engine to the Andretti F1 team.

Andretti recently passed the first phase of becoming an official F1 team - receiving approval from FIA. However, the team must now reach an agreement with the F1 Management & commercial rights holder, Liberty Media, before officially becoming the 11th team on the grid. The American team though, is also having to navigate itself from the varying degree of opposition from some of the current teams on the grid.

The engine itself will be under GM's 'Cadillac' brand, with the company already having begun development of a prototype of its F1 power unit. General Motors also feels that the development of the F1 engine will lead to improvements in its road cars, especially in the areas of electrification, hybrid tech, sustainable fuels and many more.

Mark Reuss, President, GM, stated, "We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit." He further added, "With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world."
