F1 engine sound could get louder with 2026 regulations, says Domenicali

During a recent interview, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stated that engine noise could improve with the upcoming 2026 regulations.

F1 cars currently use a 1.6-litre turbocharged hybrid V6 engine, which is regarded as the quietest powertrain in the history of the sport. With the upcoming 2026 regulation changes, the powertrain will rely more heavily on hybrid assistance while retaining the 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engine, which "on paper" looks less promising in terms of engine noise.

However, the F1 CEO believes that despite the additional hybrid assistance, the sound generated by the powertrain will improve. He stated, "Of course, we need to be hybrid, we're [going to be] hybrid for the future but the intention is to make sure in the new regulation, the engine sound will be higher." He further added, "It's part of our emotion, it's really what our fans want to hear and that's our duty for us to commit to that."

Domenicali also shut down the idea of full electrification quickly, stating "Formula 1 is not electric." The sport is working towards the use of sustainable fuels with its hybrid powertrains for the future.

Re: F1 engine sound could get louder with 2026 regulations, says Domenicali

I have been following F1 since 1997. I have watched F1 races at Sepang, Singapore, Nürburgring, Hockenheimring, Abu Dhabi and Buddh Circuit. I have witnessed V10s, V8s, and the current V6s in actual racing. I have heard V12s only in demo / exhibition runs at Nürburgring.

Current V6s are shitty sound wise compared to the shrieking V12s of the past. How much ever F1 tries to make current engines louder they will never be able to replicate the ROAR of naturally aspirated V12s.

V12s just give you GOOSEBUMPS

There are some things in life one must not be politically correct with. Extreme sports like F1, but an example. What F1 needs is this:

And refuelling:

Bring back the noise, the fuel pitstops and the tyre battles

Totally - been following F1 since the mid-80s. First via radio and magazines, then 14' sat-dish in 90s, cable and DTH through the 2000s and finally online. Always thought tyre variety and fuel stops made the race a driver's game more than a strategist's.

Koi lauta de mere bite huye din! And I want to lose my excess tummy too !

Oh yes, still remember the 2000s Bridgestone Vs Michelin era along with split strategies with respect to fuel. Good ol' MSC always used to out qualify his Bridgestone clad Ferrari while McLaren & Renault mostly used to benefit from their Michelins.

This time around, it will be amazing to have a Pirelli vs Michelin rivalry and its effects on the grid. Will be interesting to see which team opts for either brands. Also, removal of tyre warming blankets will throw in another unknown area for the teams!

When it comes to noise, I remember the great Ulrich Baretzky from Audi when he mentioned regarding the noiseless Diesel powered R10 TDi LMP1 machines "Noise does not translate into more power, but loss of power." Though the WEC has different philosophy, I'd prefer more efficient F1 engines as well as it will attract more manufacturers to the grid, hopefully.
