F1 cars looking at rearview cameras & in-car screens; Still a work in progress

Formula One recently announced that the 2023 F1 cars would be mandated to increase the size of their rearview mirrors by 50 mm from 150 mm to 200 mm. The larger mirrors are said to improve rear visibility from the driver's cockpit.

According to reports, apart from the larger mirrors next year, the sport is also said to be working on a way to introduce rearview cameras on F1 cars with an in-car screen in the cockpit for the future.

Currently, rearview cameras are being used in multiple motorsport categories. F1 itself is said to have had multiple discussions over the years about the possibility of introducing the technology in modern race cars. However, as per FIA's single-seater technical director, Nikolas Tombazis, there are three big hurdles to overcome before screens can even be considered for F1.

According to Tombazis, firstly, there is not much space in an F1 cockpit to add a screen. Second, the tech is used in cars with closed cockpits which offer a dark condition inside, offering better visibility & third is the time taken to shift the driver's focus from the track ahead to a small screen. The technical director stated that these factors need to be evaluated carefully. The sport is also said to be looking at other ways, but all of it is still a "work in progress".

As much as I am for technological progress, certain parts like the rearview mirror should be left as it is. Not only is it extremely simple; the reflected image is also instantaneous, which I don't think any camera can come close to replicating. And in a sport as quick as F1, even a millisecond's lag from the camera to the screen could prove to be hazardous.
