Re: The 2022 Formula 1 (Silly) Season Thread!

Russian GP has been cancelled in solidarity with Ukraine.

Per the calendar as of now, the Russian GP will be held on 25-Sept; a long while away. I imagine this crisis will be resolved by then and things will go ahead as planned; and if not, we'd have way bigger problems than the GP being cancelled.

I think once cancelled, it will remain cancelled. Seb & Max made their stand very clear on this and I'm pretty sure all other GPDA members would agree as well. As of now, Russia has been removed from the calendar (website) and rumours are that F1 has started selling tickets to another race at Turkey.

I think if they wanted to cancel they could have explicitly mentioned that. " Impossible to hold in current circumstances"? What does that even mean? Are they giving space that if current circumstances change then it will go ahead?

Russia is not going to get isolated from world forever because of this. War crimes happen on a daily basis somewhere or other over the world. All this anger/condemnation will die down 1 day (not advocating it should happen but that is what happens) and Russia will be accepted by masses once again. F1 would not want to lose out when that happens.

Correct decision else it would be worse than the 2005 Grand Prix but this time only Mazepin would. be the only participant!

Who's to say he even gets to drive anymore?

Mazepin's father, is the majority shareholder and director of Uralkali, whose branding was recently dropped by Haas from their cars. This makes the chances of the sponsorship deal going through, that was supposed to take place next week, seem bleak.

Also it's no secret that his father owns about 20% of the team and the sponsorship deals are well over $20m per season. And now, thanks to Russia's declaration of war, I'd say both the funding and the seat that it buys are likely in danger.

If this does indeed happen, I'm not sure how I'd feel. I mean, sure I'd feel bad for the chap and he is a great driver, for sure but not talented enough to be in F1 on merit. The general consensus and the stats, all point toward Mick S. being the superior driver. Let's see what happens..

My two cents.

Honestly, I am not surprised one bit. An equitable yet inevitable decision.

All of us knew Mazepin’s career in F1 would be short, I just didn’t imagine it to be shorter than one single season.

I don’t suppose any other team would want Urakali’s name associated with them until at least a few couple years and without Urakali’s money there is no point in hiring Nikita either, I do feel sorry for him though.
