Formula 1 : The German GP 2019

The Circuit

Circuit Characteristics
- The high speed Parabolica followed by the hairpin offers the best overtaking opportunity
- This year the DRS zone at the start/stop line has been removed, leaving the circuit with two DRS zones.
- High change of rain on race day
- Mercedes celebrates 125 years at a track originally started as their test track.
- The fastest ever lap was set by Vettel during qualifying in 2018 - 1:11.212
- Official lap record is still held by Kimi Raikkonen in the 2004 race : 1:13.780

2018 Result
- Vettel crashes out of the race that for all counts seems to be a clincher for him.
- Hamilton leads Bottas in a Mercedes 1-2, notably Mercedes first 1-2 at the venue.
- Mercedes takes over the constructors and drivers championship lead.
- a turning point for the worse for Ferrari's 2018 campaign.

2019 tyre choices
Pirelli has chosen the C2, C3 and C4 soft, medium and hard compounds for the race.

Drive on,

Re: Formula 1 : The German GP 2019

Looking forward, especially after the action in some of the last races .

Future of Hockenheim is in doubt:
Quote:
Formula One Managing Director Chase Carey doesn't make it sound as if the German Grand Prix will be back for 2020 either.

"The talks are complicated," Carey said in an interview with the German weekly Sport Bild.

As in the current season, the F1 circuit will feature 21 races in 2020, but with Hanoi and Zandvoort having already been added to the calendar, two of the current races will have to go. Hockenheim finds itself as one of the prime candidates for the chop, along with Barcelona and Mexico City. This would spell the end of the German Grand Prix for the foreseeable future, as the Nürburgring, which last hosted an F1 race it 2013, is no longer an option.

Liberty Media reportedly charges venues a fee in the neighborhood of $50 million (€44.5 million) for the privilege of having the Formula 1 circus stop in their town. It's a sum that cannot be covered by ticket sales alone. This year, Hockenheim was only able to afford it with the help of major sponsor Mercedes. Not just that, but "Liberty Media moved a bit on the fee," said Seiler, who at the same time bemoaned the lack of outside support.

Re: Formula 1 : The German GP 2019

Mercedes will run a special livery at the Hockenheim GP to mark the 125th anniversary of the company’s involvement in motorsport at virtually all levels including F1.

Back in those days, the colour of the car would symbolise the origin of the team – French cars were typically painted blue, Italian cars red and British cars green. The international racing colour for German cars was white.

The special Hockenheim livery is an homage to the design of classic Mercedes-Benz racing cars. The front wing and the nose of the car are painted white similar in design to Mercedes race cars in the beginning of the 20th century.

Quote:
The white nose and front wing also feature historic logos from Mercedes-Benz, PETRONAS, Tommy Hilfiger and Pirelli as well as Niki Lauda’s signature to pay tribute to the racing legend, chairman and friend of the team who passed away two months ago.

In the barge board area at the front of the chassis the white paint seems to be “scraped off”, exposing the silver livery below. This effect echoes the legendary origins of the Silver Arrows. In 1934, the Mercedes-Benz W 25 competed in the 750 kg formula; however, legend has it that it was slightly too heavy before the race, so the team scraped away the white paint to save weight, exposing the metallic bodywork underneath it.

Towards the rear of the car, the paint scrape effect fades away, showing the original paint job of the 2019 Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 which includes the Mercedes-Benz brand pattern that the team has run all season.

The team’s race garage has also been redesigned for Mercedes’ home race at Hockenheim and features historic race posters from different eras in which the Silver Arrows competed.

The team has one more visual surprise planned for the weekend to celebrate the 1950s – the era when Mercedes originally joined Formula One.

It looks like this will be the last race at Hockenheim, at least for a few years before someone else negotiates a better deal. A real shame losing out such "family jewellery".
Instead of taking F1 to Hanoi, they can do feeder races like F3/F2 first and see the reaction there. Assen in Holland is a nice track as well.

Cooler weather or rain will play into the hands of the Mercedes. I would like to watch Ham Vs Max on the wets . That would be something 😇. Herr Marko is already sounding out alerts that Mercedes have a new cooling package and will not be affected like Austria.

Re: Formula 1 : The German GP 2019

One query:

How many engines are there

1. Mercedes

2. Ferrari

3. Honda

Are Renault still running their own engines.

In any case the thrill of the dedecicilindri screaming at 21,000rpm is gone. I literally blew ones brain. I have heard it a few times live.

Re: Formula 1 : The German GP 2019

Do not get fooled by the Q1 data. The high rating of Ferrari is due to the Mercs using Yellow (Medium) Tyres, while Ferrrari were on Soft (Red) tyres. One can easily attribute about 3-5 sec. to it.

Q2 is in any case a technical session. Here tyre endurance etc are evaluated.

I was wondering whether Ferrari have given up the practice of going 'Soft' on day 1 and only 'going all out' on day 2.

I suppose you mean P1 and P2 rather than Q1 and Q2.

Re: Formula 1 : The German GP 2019

Hockenheim ring is a tremendous circuit, it has a very good layout. It's a shame it won't be there in ! The money crazed F1 will move to where money is. Hope Mercedes will save the German grand prix.
Ferrari and Mercedes looks evenly matched in Practice 1 and 2, with Ferrari having slight edge. Force India or should I say Racing Point, got its much needed update, showed promise. Perez and Stroll both in top 10 in Practice 2.
Most of teams must have worked on race pace, as its going to rain tomorrow and Sunday. Hamilton, Verstappen and Vettel will be favorites for pole in rainy conditions.

We lost Nurburgring (even the small circuit) now this. They want us to give up on F1. They are still sticking with Monte Carlo which has zero safety and poor infrastructure. I will be sad to see the demise of the German GP.

Maybe street racing on Berlin!!

Vettel can't catch a break. Poor guy didn't even get a chance to put down a lap in Q1, will start plumb last.

Re: Formula 1 : The German GP 2019

I read somewhere, Ferrari trying for 1-2 managed 10-20.
Mercedes again manages to salvage a weekend where it wasn't strongest. The only silver lining is Verstappen splitting the duo. Verstappen will be hoping for good start, as he is starting on softs. 8 out of 10 teams were through Q3, thats how closely matched was the pace in mid field. Max has good chance tomorrow, be it any condition ,dry or wet race.

Really hoping for Verstappen on the pole, to add some colour to the otherwise clinical sport F1 has become under Liberty Media and the new regulations.
