Formula 1- McLaren eyeing Mercedes engines?

McLaren is believed to be disappointed with the results of the Formula 1 2017 pre-season testing. The engines that are used to power its cars are supplied by Honda. These power plants have been plagued with low power, especially on the straights and with frequent stalling issues. Now, media reports suggest that the company could be looking at its previous engine supplier - Mercedes as an alternate engine supplier for its campaign.

The McLaren - Honda combination had a phenomenal run between the 1988 and 1992 seasons with four constructors' and drivers' championships to their credit. However, since 2015, when the two companies collaborated together once again, they have not had a good run and this year's chances seem dismal. This could mean that McLaren may consider other engine suppliers for its cars. At the moment, there are no official statements from either McLaren or Mercedes regarding their interests in working together this season.

While McLaren's confidence in the Japanese manufacturer may be growing weaker, Honda itself is confident that it can overcome the issues related to engine performance and reliability.

The risk of McLaren running into the possibility of not finishing races or being the slowest on the grid, could mean a huge blow to its income from the constructors' championship in this season. Additionally, it may also limit its chances at attracting a title sponsor. For McLaren, the exit from the McLaren-Honda partnership won’t be easy, considering it receives US$ 100 million from the Japanese manufacturer along with free engine. Honda also supports McLaren heavily in terms of sponsorship and pays a significant part of the drivers' salaries.

I just feel bad for Fernando Alonso. The guy is exceptionally talented. Given a competitive car, he can get podium again.

Now Eric Boullier is unsure if McHonda will be able to finish the first race in Melbourne!

An interesting take by Martin Brundle as to why F Alonso will not quit McHonda this season.

In between all this, Honda has said that they are committed to F1 and McLaren.

It appears that the only way that McLaren can go now is either up or out. Given what they are, "out" may not be an option at this time. Alonso and Button did drive their hearts out last year. If they get a few points through the year, at the current state of their car, they could celebrate as if they are the constructors champion!

I think they stick with Honda. remember at one time Honda were the 'crowned' kings of Turbo-charged engines. So expect good days to be back. Yes, it will be later than we hoped.

It looks like there will not be a divorce, but being 2.5 seconds off the pace over a race distance is very embarrassing. How long will they accept being lapped race after race. This soft of deficit will take atleast another 2 years to fix.

What a shame.
