Hyundai, BMW and 5 other carmakers recall nearly 550,000 cars in Korea - Link

The South Korean Ministry for Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Friday announced that it would recall 549,931 units of 126 models from automakers including Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, BMW Korea, Mercedes-Benz Korea, FCA Korea and Audi Volkswagen Korea over defects.

As per the ministry, for those who own the cars on the recall list, the ministry will alert them via mail and text message.

"The authorities have said that if a vehicle owner has already paid money to fix the defects found by the ministry, he or she can ask the automaker to compensate them for their costs," the Korea Herald said.

According to The Korea Herald report, the ministry has issued recall orders for 294,622 Hyundai Motor vehicles, including Santa Fes, which were found to have foreign substances like oil and moisture inside their braking modules. The defect poses a fire hazard, the ministry said.

Cracks were found inside 241,921 cars made by BMW, in 79 models including the 520d the report said adding that they were found to have cracks inside their exhaust gas coolers.

"Another 50 BMWs were found to have poor protection for passengers, as the airbags on the side either unfolded too forcefully, or did not completely unfold," it mentioned.

Around 757 vehicles of Kia’s Grand Carnival VQ were also discovered to be fire-prone due to faulty fuel pipes.

Mercedes-Benz Korea found defective sunroof glass panels in 11,480 vehicles recalled, with 36 models affected, including the E280, which can pose a risk to the cars behind the vehicle as the glass panel can become detached, the report added.

Additionally, the report further said, 306 Audi Volkswagen A3 40 TFSIs did not pass the ministry standard for tire deflation warnings, according to the ministry. The automaker will be fined.

Honda recalled close to 1.4 million vehicles globally over a faulty fuel pump. It is believed that the fuel pump could fail resulting in the engine stalling or losing power.



In the USA, 1.36 lakh cars are affected by this issue. The models that come under this recall include the 2018 and 2019 Accord, Civic hatchback, Civic Type-R, HR-V, 2019 Fit as well as the 2019 and 2020 Insight.

A few Acura models are also affected. These include the 2019 RDX, RLX, RLX Sport Hybrid and the 2018 and 2019 NSX.

Honda will notify owners of the affected vehicles in July. The carmaker will be replacing the fuel pumps supplied by Denso free of cost.

This time around, the Korean car makers is also asking owners of vehicles which may have a possible fault in the electrical system to park these vehicles outside and in open spaces just in case there is an incident related to fire.

The seriousness of the possible fault can be ascertained from several US media reports which inform that certain cars may be having an electrical short in the on-board computers which could - in some cases - cause fire. The vehicles part of the latest recall are models of Tucson made between 2016 and 2018, and 2020 to some even made this year. Associated Press reports that Tucson SUVs equipped with Smart Control Cruise feature are not part of the list.

Due to an error in the eCall system that resulted in emergency responders being dispatched to wrong locations according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mercedes Benz USA has recalled more than one million vehicles.

The software design of the communication module may result in a failure to send the correct vehicle location for the emergency call system in the event of a crash and increase the risk of injury following a crash, the NHTSA said.

Models being recalled include CLA-Class, GLA-Class, GLE-Class, GLS-Class, SLC-Class, A-Class, GT-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, CLS-Class, SL-Class, B-Class, GLB-Class, GLC-Class, and G-Class vehicles from the model years 2016 to 2021.

The automaker plans to issue a software update that will be installed by dealers or through an over-the-air update.

Mercedes-Benz in Europe in October 2019 launched an investigation based on a report from the Mercedes-Benz eCall center of a single instance in the European market where the automatic eCall system relayed an inaccurate vehicle position.

After an investigation reviewing various software combinations of the communication module, the company's research showed additional similar events where the vehicle position was incorrectly transmitted.

Kia Recalls 147,000 Seltos and Soul Models For Fire Risk, Could Require Engine Swap.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week, the 2020-2021 model year of both vehicles may feature improperly heat-treated piston rings. Kia has recalled 147,249 unit of the Seltos and Soul combined. Specifically speaking, models fitted with the 2.0-liter Nu MPI four-cylinder engine have been affected by this issue, which could potentially cause a fire or cause the engine to stall while driving.

Tesla is recalling around 6,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles due to loose brake caliper bolts that may cause a loss of tire pressure, increasing the risk of a crash.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) posted the recall on May 25th, 2021. Tesla is recalled Model 3 builds from 2019-2021 and Model Ys from 2020-2021 because of the issue.

Tesla will handle the issue through its in-house Service centers by inspecting the brake caliper bolts and tightening them if they are loose. A replacement of the caliper bolts may be needed, but Tesla will perform the maintenance or replacement free of charge, according to the NHTSA posting.

Feds probe 241,000 Ford EcoSport SUVs for pump failure, some may require engine replacement.

NHTSA says that it has received 95 complaints from consumers alleging that an oil pump issue has led to an engine failure while their vehicle was in motion.

The agency’s Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) says it has received 95 complaints from consumers in the U.S. claiming that their engines have failed due to an issue stemming from their oil pump. Some report seeing a low oil level warning lamp on their dash right before they lose power, in some cases while the vehicle is in motion.

Since the issue is still under investigation, it’s not yet clear precisely how the problem started. In complaints sent to NHTSA, one consumer from San Antonio, Texas, gave a little insight into their experience in June.
