Airbag recall 2014 (Takata)

http://www.oregonlive.com/business/i...w_demands.html

U.S. safety regulators are ordering Japanese auto supplier Takata Corp. to provide more information about air bags that can explode and shoot shrapnel toward drivers and passengers.

The order sent Thursday(30/10/2014) makes 36 separate requests for information on production mistakes, lawsuit settlements and reports of deaths or injuries that the Tokyo-based company has received. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also wants to know how many replacement parts Takata can make each day and what it has discussed with automakers and competitors.

Takata has until Dec. 1 to turn in the information or it could face fines of $7,000 per day. A Takata spokesman said the company is cooperating and will work to meet the agency's requests.

Ten automakers have recalled nearly 8 million vehicles in the U.S. — and 12 million worldwide — equipped with potentially faulty Takata air bag inflators. Safety advocates say the problem has caused four deaths in the U.S.

Honda has been hit hardest, with about 5 million cars called back to repair their air bags. Other affected automakers include Nissan, Chrysler, Ford, Mazda, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Toyota, BMW and General Motors. Lawmakers say that 30 million cars with potentially faulty Takata air bags are driving on U.S. roads.

Takata, the world's second-largest air bag maker with 22 percent of the market, has been plagued by problems with its air bags since at least 2001. That year, Japanese automaker Isuzu reported an exploding air bag in the Isuzu Rodeo and Honda Passport, and quietly recalled three affected vehicles, according to a class action lawsuit against Takata and automakers that was filed this week in Florida.

Takata has given various explanations for the issue, including humid conditions at its factory in Mexico; improper welds; trouble with stamping equipment; and an improper amount of generant, which produces the gas that makes air bags inflate.

http://www.wired.com/2014/10/takata-airbag-recall/

It’s not an easy problem to fix on a massive scale—there aren’t 7.8 million airbags lying around to replace the potentially dangerous ones. Some consumers may have to wait months to get replacements, and Toyota has suggested disabling the passenger side airbag and keeping that seat empty as a temporary solution, The New York Times reports.

Audi, Porsche and VW issue recall in select markets

German car brands Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen have issued a recall in select global markets. According to media reports, over 93,500 vehicles are being recalled to fix a suspected fuel leak issue. Volkswagen, which owns all three brands, says vibration during driving, and production issues can cause small leaks in rare cases.

The recall includes the Audi A6 and Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid SUV from 2012, the Audi A7 from 2012 and 2013, along with the Audi Q7, S4 and S5 from 2011 to 2012. All the vehicles included reportedly use 3-liter V-6 engines. Porsche is recalling the Cayenne and Panamera S Hybrids from 2011 to 2012. Audi says, around 80,000 of their vehicles are being recalled globally, with about two-thirds being accounted for by the U.S and China alone. Porsche will recall around 13,500 units globally.

Volkswagen says only a few hundred units will be included, because the recall only pertains to one model. It is unknown if the recall will include India as well.

Renault Dusters sold between January 2013 to August 2014 in the UK market and made in Renault's Chennai plant are being recalled due to the defective paintwork. Around 90 complaints have been received for the defective paintwork. The exports to U.K. market are now from Renault's core plant in Romania.

USA: Nissan, BMW issue recall over faulty fuel pump

Nissan and BMW have issued a recall for a total of 94,296 vehicles. The recall is over an issue with the fuel pump that can cause the vehicles to stall. For Nissan, the recall involves 76,242 units of the Nissan Rogue CUV, while BMW has recalled 18,054 units of models including the 2, 3 and 4 Series.

The vehicles in question share the same Robert Bosch fuel pump. The problem suspected is with the nickel plating that can come loose on the pump. Dislodged flakes of the plating can choke the fuel pump, cutting off the fuel flow and causing the vehicle to stall, possibly leading to an accident though none have been reported so far. In the cases of both brands, model year 2014 units will be affected.

While the recall has been issued in the USA, it is unknown if other markets will be affected. Of all the cars mentioned by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the BMW 328i is one model that is also offered in India. Nissan however, does not offer the Rogue in our sub-continent.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

An article in TOI states that Toyota and Nissan have just announced that they are going to recall 6.5 million cars globally over the infamous Takata Airbag issue. Wonder if they include Indian vehicles too.

Re: Mighty Honda has Quality problems too!

Honda Fit (Jazz) calls, City, Civic and CR-V for failure in the fuel level sensor.

Honda calls for recall Fit models, City, Civic and CR-V for sensor failure responsible for measuring the fuel level in the tank. To solve the problem the brand will replace the sensor proactively. Cars from 2011 - 2015 are affected.

Quote:
In some units, the marker fuel level present on the instrument panel may indicate a volume larger than the real in the tank, leaving the driver susceptible to lack of fuel (dry crash). Also according to the manufacturer the engine involuntary termination can be a factor for a possible collision, in extreme cases, can cause injury or even fatal to the occupants and third parties.
Quote:
Until that is done the Honda repair guides the driver to maintain the level of the upper fuel tank to the environment to avoid the possibility of occurrence of that symptom.

Wow, so certain decade old Hondas in USA which probably might have done up to 5-6 lakh kilometers by now are found to have potential defects to their trannys and Honda themselves are recalling them to get them repaired. Hardly earth shattering "quality defect" news buddy. I bet certain German car owners over there would be in tears right now after reading that news. I mean transmissions that last 10 years, that would surely stump them.

Volvo XC90 recalled in Europe and US

The all new premium SUV from Volvo - XC 90 has been recalled in some international markets due to a potential issue with an electronic wire harness. This wiring harness is present in the front seats and it controls the restraints system in the car.

An improper wiring assembly could result in a damaged wiring harness, which would display a warning message on the instrument cluster of the car. Frontal airbags too may be affected due to this and may not perform appropriately. Volvo claims that no incidents have been reported and neither is there a risk of the side airbags being deployed by mistake.

Approximately 200 units of the XC 90 in Europe and the United States have been affected (majority of them being in Sweden). Customers will be contacted by the company to get their cars inspected at their nearest workshop.

The XC 90 has been recently launched in India with deliveries of the SUV likely to begin only in September 2015. Click here to read our launch report.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

Now, a recall issued for 65,844 Range Rovers, Range Rover Sports & LR4s. Issues are faulty sunroofs and defective door latches.

Quote:
The automaker has issued a recall for 65,844 cars that are said to have defective door latches and faulty sunroofs. This recall was issued after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked the car company to do it.

Due to the faulty door latches, there is a possibility of the vehicles’ doors flying open at high speeds. This is downright dangerous and a major safety hazard. This problem has affected 65,352 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models of MY13 to MY16 make in the States.

The defective sunroof also has a similar problem wherein it can fly open when the vehicle is travelling at a considerable speed. This issue has affected 492 units of the Land Rover LR4. The cause of the sunroof problem can either be traced right to the original supplier or it may have been occurring due to the bonding agent used to glue the sunroof to the body.

The recall will definitely extend to other parts of the world including India as all Range Rovers in the said period were manufactured in the UK.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

3 other major recalls issued.

Honda has issued a recall for 7,42,493 vehicles in China over airbag problems.

Quote:
Starting from September 15, the recall involves 2007-2012 Fit cars, 2007-2008 and 2009-2012 City cars, and 2011 Everus cars, produced between January 4, 2007 and December 30, 2011.

Due to production faults, the airbag of the driver's seat may fail to work in times of need, said Honda.

The company said it will offer a free replacement of the airbags.

Fiat Chrysler has issued three separate recalls for more than 3 million vehicles in the USA, mostly involving it's RAM pickup trucks.

Quote:
The first recall is to repair a steering wheel wiring harness that could rub against a spring in the air bag module. The resulting abrasion from the friction could cause an electrical short, prompting the front air bags to unexpectedly deploy. The recall affects just over 1 million 2012 to 2014 Ram trucks that were manufactured between January, 2011 and October, 2014.

The automaker is also recalling more than half a million trucks to fix faulty impact sensors. The faulty sensors could cause seat belt pre-tensioners to activate and air bags to deploy unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. The sensor issue affects 667,406 in the US and 176,130 vehicles overseas.

The automaker said Friday that it was recalling about 1.4 million cars and trucks in the US after two hackers revealed that they were able to take control of a Jeep Cherokee SUV over the Internet. In that recall, Fiat Chrysler said it would update software to insulate the vehicles from being remotely controlled.

Also, Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for 150 imported vehicles cars in China as well, to fix fuses mounted inside the passenger-side fuse boxes.

Quote:
The affected cars may have fuses that have been incorrectly installed in the passenger-side interior fuse boxes, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today.

In extreme cases, the fuses may malfunction and pose safety hazards.

The recalled vehicles belong to GLA, A and B series, and all of them were manufactured in September, 2014.

Series of massive recalls for Fiat Chrysler - will it hit them hard?

Fiat Chrysler has been in the news over the last couple of weeks for over 3 major recalls, including one that also cost them the largest fine in US automotive history:

First came the hacking recall after their uConnect software was found to be compromised through remote hacking:

Fiat Chrysler Recall - Jeep Hacking

Then came the massive fine and a huge rap on their knuckles, that also includes clauses for buyback (at higher than market value!!!) for more than a million Jeeps. They were fined $105 million, the largest on any US auto manufacturer according to this Reuters report:

http://reut.rs/1LPNdtS

Then comes this news of a Dodge Charger (332,000 of them) recall

Dodge Charger 2011-14 Recall

How will they cope up with all this, I wonder.
