After Toyota, Honda etc.. Now BMW Recalls!

Its indeed a year of recalls. Following Honda, Toyota etc, Now BMW is recalling few models of X6 and X5.

Quote:
The first quarter of 2010 can be termed as the period of automotive records with BMW joining in the drama. BMW USA is recalling X5 and X6 sport activity vehicles manufactured between December 14, 2009 and December 16, 2009, in order to correct a defect that could affect safety in a rollover crash. BMW has not yet explained how it plans to fix the problem, or when owners can expect to receive a recall notice but we really wonder how BMW even figured a problem persists in the first place.
“In the upper right area of the windshield, bonding may be insufficient over a length of approximately 50 cm. In the case of a rollover, the stability of the roof could be affected increasing the risk of injuries,” BMW wrote to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

I am not surprised at all. After seeing Toyota's 'feet held to the fire' experience in this crisis I am sure all auto mfrs will play it safe. Better to come clean, nip it in the bug before it becomes a conflagration and consumes you.

So you see car mfrs doing what I see as the right thing for the customer. If only Toyota had woken up earlier.

Cheers!

No remorse towards the X6. I would be most joyful if it could be permanently recalled and off the streets.

I agree 100%!

However, with regard to the recall, BMW seem to be playing it ultra safe. The problem sounds more like a problem in someone's head! .

However ridiculous it sounds, it's nice to see all the companies on their toes!

Shishir, IMO, this is nothing new in the automobile world, just that due to internet & increased vehicle sales these news are reaching faster. Another reason could be is due to increase in use of technology, sales drives to attain targets & lack of time to focus on simple things. I would become only when Lambo's/Ferrari/Bentley starts recalling.

Currently the trend is to get max customers for their cars and the race to be the first in the world and because of this "Quantity is ganing" rather than "Quality". But everyone are forgetting about the race to be the "BEST"

I think you made a typo, but this recall is for older generation of Sonata. While 2011 is the new Sonata that went on sale around a month ago. Both are different problems for different models.

Though its a nice step up to recall something which has not sold very much there by saving a bigger loss. Though its market share fell 4% in USA . Too bad its happening with manufacturers.

Hyundai recalls 47,000 Sonata; India not affected

NEW DELHI: Korean car giant Hyundai on Wednesday announced the recall of over 47,000 units of its premium sedan 'Sonata' from its home market as well as the US to rectify a door lock problem, but the move will not have any impact in India.

"Since the launch of the Sonata in Korea last September, Hyundai Motor discovered a mechanical problem with its front door latches which, in very rare instances, will not close properly," the company said in a statement.

The company is recalling the vehicles "voluntarily" after "a handful" of customers complained about the defect, it said.

When contacted, a spokesperson from the company's Indian subsidiary Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) said the recall will not have any effect here.

"This will not impact the sales of Sonata in India ...as in India (only) the Sonata Transform is sold," the official said, adding the recall is for the new YF Sonata sold in the US and South Korea.

As part of the recall in select global markets, Hyundai has fitted modified parts to some of its Korean and the US production models in order to avoid a possible occurrence of the problem, the company said.

"The recall will affect YF Sonatas produced in Korea until December 6 (approximately 46,000 units) and those produced at HMS (Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama) and sold to customers until February 16 (approximately 1,300 units)," the statement said.

Hyundai joins global recall club

We have seen several marques recalling their cars for manufacturing defects this year. The latest to join in is HYUNDAI! They are recalling 40,000+ units of their Sonata model. There is a mechanical problem with the front door latches. India has been spared, will affect only South Korea and USA. Complete article can be found at:-
