Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

Hyundai, Kia recall 1.7M vehicles for faulty brake switch.

Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. are recalling about 1.7 million vehicles in the United States to replace a faulty switch that can prevent brake lights from illuminating and trigger other problems.

It is the second major recall involving the stop lamp switch, following the callback of more than 500,000 Hyundai vehicles in 2009.

When a driver presses the brake, the switch is supposed to turn on the brake lights and turn off the cruise control. Also, the driver must have the brake depressed to use push-button start or shift a car out of park.

A defective stop lamp switch could cause the brake lights not to illuminate, the cruise control not to deactivate or the push-button start to work erratically,

Thanx @volkman10, hoeever, as per MSN-US total 1.9 million cars are involved, though the remaining could be the cars cold in Puerto Rico. Refer link below:

http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs...7-0846e69a1c70

Also, Mitsubishi is recalling 4,539 2013 Outlander Sports (including AWD models) for correcting a fault in the brake light switches, which may cause the vehicle to flash its brake lights intermittently or continuously keep them on for six minutes or more.

Quote:
An excessive gap in the brake-light switch plunger, which is attached to the brake pedal and mechanically activates the lights, could cause the lights to come on inadvertently and also let the shifter move out of the Park position without applying the brake pedal, Mitsubishi said.

Now GM recalls the 2013 Buick Encore due to an issue that could result in the steering wheel falling off on certain models. GM says that 144 Encores equipped with heated steering wheels could have been incorrectly retrofitted due to a parts shortage.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

Nissan is recalling 2013 Altima, Sentra, Pathfinder, Leaf & Infiniti JX for faulty passenger-airbag sensors

Quote:
Manufacturing errors caused the occupant-detection sensor in the front passenger seat to malfunction. The sensor measures weight and switches off the airbag in case the seat is empty or a child is up front. In the affected cars, the sensor could permanently disable the passenger airbag. The driver would then receive an airbag warning on the instrument cluster, and the passenger airbag indicator would display an "off" position, Nissan said.

General Motors is recalling 26,582 2013 Buick LaCrosse & Cadillac SRX to fix transmission software that could place the car in the wrong gear

Quote:
The automatic transmissions on these vehicles could switch out of manual mode unexpectedly, which would reduce the effect of engine braking. GM said it first noticed the problem in January on a 2014 SRX belonging to its engineering team and found that the transmission was shifting into sport mode rather than holding the desired gear in manual mode.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

This is not exactly a recall, but, GM have informed 779,000 owners they may need more oil changes than the onboard oil monitoring systems are telling them, due to worn chains in four-cylinder engines. The change only affects 2010-2012 Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, Buick LaCrosse & Buick Regal models with 2.4-liter LAF and LEA four-cylinder engines.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

Chrysler is recalling 263,852 vehicles, which includes a range of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep & Ram models, for six separate problems ranging from warning lights to engine stalling.

MSN-US Report here:

http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs...9-b19c024925e2

Details list of vehicles recalled include:

1. 139,000 2011-2012 Dodge Charger & Challenger & Chrysler 300 models for an airbag warning light can illuminate intermittently on. A wiring harness plug for the side airbag mounted in the seat "did not meet specification" will be replaced.

2. Driveshafts can break on 78,500 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro & Jeep Liberty models due to loose heat shields that can contact the shaft & cause it to fail. Chrysler said it received about 40 owner complaints of broken driveshafts on 2-wheel-drive models (4-wheel-drive models are unaffected by the recall).

3. Another 30,000 2012 & 2013 Jeep Compasses & Patriots are being recalled for fuel-tank transfer tubes that can deform over time (especially in high altitudes & high temperatures) & can starve the engine of gas, causing the engine to stall.

Japan carmakers to recall 3.4m cars over airbag defect

Quote:
Japan's top four carmakers are recalling 3.4 million cars globally over a defect in passenger airbags.

Toyota, which is recalling 1.73 million cars, said the vehicles had a defective part which "could cause the airbag inflator to rupture and deploy the airbag abnormally in a crash".

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

The recall bandwagon got a repeat offender, Honda, with another big recall (204196 vehicles).

The Jap automaker is recalling 204,196 2012-2013 CR-V & Odyssey, & the 2013 Acura RDX to fix brake-shift interlocks that could fail (a chronic problem for Honda), & cause the shifter to be moved without depressing the brake. These have interlock system parts that can contract in subfreezing temperatures & become slow to return to its proper position.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

Honda is recalling around 44K 2012-13 Fit (Jazz) to update the the stability control software, which allows allows the car to skid at a greater angle than allowed by federal requirements. The problem is due to the Sport model's larger tires, which may allow the vehicle to drive more quickly around turns, a situation the stability control may not recognize in time to prevent the car from skidding.

MSN-US comment:

Quote:
In reality, this isn't a defect so much as an added safety measure for those used to computer control. We say if you can't manage cornering a front-wheel-drive Honda hatchback by yourself, then you shouldn't be out on the road, period.

In another recall, Subaru is recalling more than 10K 2014 Forester to fix floor mats that can curl "when exposed to heat" & block the driver's pedals.

MSN-US report on the recall:

I wish we have such powerful agency in India, which has the power to force the errant automakers to submission. Almost all manufacturers will be forced to take the QA seriously, & consumers will be a happy lot.

Nissan recalls 123,308 Altimas for spare tire issue

Quote:
The Altimas are from model year 2013, according to documents filed the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Due to a production issue that has since been corrected, the spare tires in some of the recalled cars may have too much or not enough air in them, NHTSA said. In some cases, the over inflation may have been significant enough to hurt the tires' structural integrity, causing them to fail and increasing the risk of a crash, NHTSA said.

Honda recalls 2012-2013 Fit Sports model over stability control issues.

Honda is recalling 43,782 examples of the 2012 and 2013 Fit Sport in the US and close to 2,000 more in Canada. During federal compliance testing it was discovered that the software for the Vehicle Stability Assist allows an excessive tilt angle before applying the brakes to prevent a crash. The issue only affects Fit Sports equipped with a certain kind of tire.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

Not exactly a recall, but NHTSA is investigating few vehicles, which could lead to recall. The details are as under:

1. 2001-2007 Porsche 911 Turbo cars dumped large amounts of engine coolant while driving, as the coolant hose connection to the engine, which is glued instead of welded, failed & wet the rear tires, in some cases causing a sudden loss of traction.

2. 2005 & 2006 Dodge Viper owners (2) have complained that their cars' rear suspension knuckles had failed & caused one of the wheels to separate from the car, leading to crash & lower back injury to one of them.

3. The Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is being investigated for steering loss. In total, Ford and NHTSA received 15 complaints & warranty claims related to steering loss due to separation of the upper and lower steering shafts. An additional 42 reports from police fleets regarding loose steering-shaft bearings has also been received by the agency.

Toyota is recalling 11,489 2007-2003 FJ Cruiser SUVs for change of (auxiliary accessory headlamps mounted on the front grille) bulbs that are too bright. Link to MSN-US report:

If this was the case in India, the number of vehicles recalled, (especially in rural & semi-urban areas) would be phenomenal almost leading to catastrophe.

BMW adds 42k 3 Series model to massive air bag recall.

Quote:
On the heels of the massive airbag recall just last month, German automaker BMW has announced that it will recall 42,000 of its 2002-03 3 Series models (E46 platform) for the same problem. The recall is blamed on a single defective part, all from the same supplier, which may cause the airbag to catch fire or send metal fragments towards passengers in the front seats.
