Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

The Toyota recall is big. Affects nine models, including the Toyota Corolla and the second-generation Prius. Apparently the steering shaft is not strong enough.

But, there have been no accidents and the recalls are precautionary. But I wonder whether the T badge is taking a beating due to these frequent recalls and the sheer number of vehicles involved.

Joichi Tachikawa, a spokesman for Toyota, spoke to the BBC.
Quote:
He explained that due to the weak shaft, the splines which connect the extension shaft to the gearbox may deform if the steering wheel is "frequently and forcefully turned to the full lock position while driving at a very slow speed".

"This may create an increased backlash and the splines may eventually wear out over time, which could result in loss of steering ability," he added.

VW recalls 2731 Beetle cars in NA.

Volkswagen AG is recalling 2,791 Beetle cars in North America because the airbag may deploy even if a child is secured in the front seat.

The recall affects 2,471 Beetle cars in the United States and another 320 in Canada from model years 2012 and 2013, VW said. There were no reports of accidents or injuries.

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

I am not sure if recall of Electric scooter can be added to this list.

Quote:
A separate move to boost the Renault brand ran into problems on Tuesday as Tavares confirmed a report by daily Le Parisien that a risk of leakage had been discovered in the braking system of its four-wheeled Twizy electric scooter.
A spokeswoman for the company said the group was recalling 6,200 Twizy vehicles in Europe, produced between January and May this year, out of 8,000 produced in Europe so far.
The Twizy, made in Spain, is one of Renault's four electric models alongside the Kangoo ZE, Fluence ZE and Zoe, which should start being delivered before the end of the year, Tavares said. Production should then ramp up in early 2013.

The central recall issue is a faulty sensor in the airbag control module that may result in the inadvertent deployment of front or side curtain airbags while vehicle is in motion. This obviously has the potential to be quite dangerous.

Another 150,000 Toyotas (2001-2004 Tacoma pickups) have been recalled in US for frame rust due to which spare tires could fall out. Link:

However, Toyota's reputation is seemingly undisputed with Numero-Uno ranking in CarMD's reliability ratings (interestingly Hyundai is # 2 in the ranking).

More details of the 2013 Escape, Fusion recall because of possible engine fires.

Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 89,000 2013 Ford Escape crossovers and Fusion sedans with 1.6-liter engines that may overheat and cause fires.

Ford estimates that the voluntary recall covers about 73,320 Escapes and 15,833 Fusions in the United States and Canada.

Ford advised customers to contact a dealer as soon as possible to arrange for alternative transportation at no charge. The company said it is working on a repair for the problem.

Honda recalls 2012 Civic models (small numbers)

Honda has issued a recall of just 157 examples of the 2012 Civicdue to a steering column issue. The sedans in question were built between October 26 and October 30 this year, and were fitted with the wrong steering column assembly. Because these particular columns "may not have proper energy absorbing characteristics," in the event of an accident the risk of injury is increased.

Ford blames software glitch for Fusion, Escape recall.

A defect that raised the risk of an engine fire in Ford Motor Co.'s newly launched Escape and Fusion models was caused by a glitch in the software that monitors the vehicles' cooling systems

Ford has recalled its 2013 Escape crossover four times since July, twice for problems with its 1.6-liter turbocharged engine.

The Escape and Fusion are considered Ford's two most critical launches this year

5,800 Mercedes Benz cars (consisting of C, E, S, CL & GLK-Class models from 2011 & 2012) are recalled for potential fuel leaks.
MSN Report:

http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs...5-a869e49694ec

Quote:
The fuel filter flange, a connection joint between the fuel tank and the outside filter, may have been improperly molded so that certain areas are thin and weak. This can cause the flange to crack from the fuel line's high pressure and temperature and leak gasoline onto a hot component, such as an exhaust pipe.

Honda recalls again!!!

18th time? That is some huge number, Honda as we know is known for its bullet proof reliability.
I understand that Toyota lost the plot in order to expand and maintain the top spot but what's wrong with Honda?

Re: The Global *Recalls* Thread

Not a recall but an alert!

Toyota Motor Corp. next month is expected to alert about 700,000 U.S. owners of three Lexus nameplates about a problem with the emergency trunk release.

Affected models are the 2007-13 ES mid-sized sedans, 2006-12 IS compact cars and 2013 GS mid-sized sedans. Consumer Reports said it found that the emergency trunk release in the 2013 ES and GS can easily break off, potentially trapping occupants inside. The IS was later identified as having the same defect. The lever works properly when pulled straight or toward the passenger side of the vehicle, but the plastic on the handle snaps when pulled toward the driver’s side.

Toyota will alert owners by mail to have the releases replaced when parts and procedures are available to dealerships.
