By the late 80's, BMW/Acura/Lexus and the boys had caught up with Mercedes' then flagship - the W126 S Class. Mercedes knew it had to put in everything it had....to come out with a product so superior that it would dwarf everything that came aside it.

And so after 6 years of development, Mercedes launched the W140 S Class in 1991. The biggest, baddest and more importantly the Last true Mercedes Benz ever made. The current S Class looks like a hapless dog standing with its tail between the legs...when compared to the might of the W140. This Mercedes was an extremist in build quality, comfort and safety...so much so that Mercedes couldnt match up with its own self in 1998 when they launched the current gen S Class - Arguably a more Japanese and absolutely problematic sedan.

Connoiseurs regard the W140 as the last of the old school Benz's. Mercs that were overengineered atleast 10 times for the "just in case" events. Included in this extreme nature was a class leading 600 with a V12 under the hood churning out close to 400 horses at the time!!

This Mercedes is all about style, panache and class. It is Mercedes Benz at its absolute best...

This was truely one of the best benz created in terms of stance and build quality but somehow I still prefer the new S looks, only looks..to this..but if they build the current S with as much quality as they did this one..man..

but since they didnt, this surely rocks..and I surely hope they are going back to the german style rather than the japanese style of making cars when the next gen 2006 S comes out..

Wheeeeeeee GTO, I knew i could count on ya matey !! These old-school Mercs will blow the socks off the new plasticky MBs. That's classy, aggressive and a brute all the way through.

Remember - terms such as "built like a tank", "carved out of a single block of granite" and all those terms which we associate with Mercs today, came into being 'coz of these beautiful beasts. Built to last, they represent the golden age of MB's engineering excess and commitment to bulletproof reliability.......those days are long gone now.

How true! Old school Mercs rock! It feels great to see a W140 S600 eveyday. Truly majestic.

Now, if only Diana wore a seat belt ! it did well considering the bodyguard wearing a belt survived a 140km/h impact into a pillar

An irony that Mercedes actually took a step backward (and mostly in quality). But then I guess its great news for us connoiseurs so that we can pick up a W126 or a W140 for a fraction of the $$$ that ninnies pay for a decidedly inferior new S Class.

Ahh thats what Mercedes Benz cars are all about. The current S class simply has no character and it looks like a mouse in front of the mighty W140

So true..... the new S class doesn't have the finesse of the old school W140.

Hahaha, now you and I know where that statement was made first and has been suitably modified to suit the situation.

I agree with you. Its the last of the old school mercs that really gave you that tank, built to last feel. The current gen mercs with their plastic shiny bits falling all over the place no longer spell quality anymore. The Merc-M class for instance has such a horrid dashboard that your neighbour's VW Golf seems to be better fitted out. The engine and electronic problems are so bad, that the 7 series debacle looks miniscule in front of Merc's recalcitrant problems

And to let you into a secret. Its the last Merc i ever loved. The new gen twin eyed, softish look mercs turned me away from the brand for good. Which is why I am such a hardcore fanatic of BMW, but just about holding on to it. Mercedes should do a limited run production of W140s and W126s once again just to highlight to the world that they can build quality cars. A perfect advertisement for their current state of affairs.

Thread revived. The most fitting example of an extremist car maker flirting with the limits of flamboyance, style and dominance.

I beg to disagree - the biggest, baddest (Idi Amin had a few), grandest and most outrageous Benz has to be the the dictator's choice, the oil sheikh's choice, the Pope's choice, the Queen (of England)'s choice - the one and only...

Mercedes Benz Pullman 600 !!!!!
