| ID:696; 1966-1973 Motor Holdings Trekka ID:696 is a 1966-1973 Motor Holdings Trekka. It was made in New-Zealand powered by Škoda mechanicals.  The MH Trekka was manufactured between 1966 and 1973 -- the only vehicle designed and manufactured in New Zealand to ever enter commercial production albeit for a short span. It was made in van and truck form. The bodies were made of steel and were fitted with canvas or fibreglass canopies, not unlike our old Mahindra Jeeps. It is not a 4x4. Just a fancy two-wheel-drive station wagon like our Qualis. The power train of the Trekka came from Škoda Octavias.  The Octavia engine and gearbox, originally intended for a rear-engine, rear wheel drive Octavia were placed at the front. The engine drove the rear wheels, independently suspended with swinging half-axles, like a Standard Herald. This curious arrangement had the additional complication of an inverted gear linkage. 4th gear was where 1st should be and vice versa. New Zealand government policy emphasised employment. Back when NZ made Trekkas, unemployment was 0%. Once the New Zealand government lifted the high import duties on foreign automobiles, even NZ rural and construction sectors could afford better! The local Trekka industry buckled and collapsed under the onslaught of competition from cheap imports. Ram |

| ID:697 is a Shanghai58 manufactured between 1958 and 1963 in China. It was the country's first cross country vehicle. Any more Chinese surprises, agspins? |

| Another mediocre Trekker Winnebago is a Forest City, Iowa, USA based manufacturer of motorhome RVs. Among other things, they made a fiberglass cap for the pickup bed of the 1981 Toyota Hilux 4x4 pickup truck. This combination was sold by Winnebago as the 1981 Winnebago Trekker and by Toyota as the 1981 Toyota Trekker.  Another lacklustre mediocre crate that was plagued by recalls. Eventually Toyota made one all by themselves and called it the Toyota 4Runner. OK so it has High-lifted suspension and chrome wheels. It used to be, that the quintessential American was a nomad -- a traveller, right from the days when the first European settlers traveled across the continental United States in 1848 in search of gold and better prospects, westwards to California, Oregon and Washington, some stopping and settling for a while on the way. Small wonder then, they invented the motor home. That curiosity that some of our friends back home saw for the first time in movies like Swades(2004). Winnebago Industries is fifty-one years old. They have made some great products and had their fair share of lackluster ones like the recall plagued Trekker pickup cap. Here is a 1967 Winnebago Brave in Independence Day 4 (1996).  The latest Winnebago Tour has a Volvo B7R sized 39' 8" body. It is powered by a 400 bhp 8.9 litre Cummins diesel, through an Allison 6-speed electronic transmission. Among its creature comforts are a 37-inch LCD TV with home theater, satellite dish antenna, 8kW diesel genset and a 2kW inverter and 380 litre water tank.  Closer to home, this is not a Winnebago, but still representative of the travel-with-all-my-things freedom portrayed by the type.  In the movie Swades(2004), the NRI techie Mohan, (played by Shahrukh Khan) chooses to drive to his rural childhood home in a rented motorhome, so he can have his own AC power for powering his laptop, mobile phone and creature comforts like airconditioning and stereo, throughout his stay. | |
