ID:618; 1973 Volkswagen SP2

ID:618, this superbly finished coupe is a 1973 Volkswagen SP2.

Official Guess the car Thread (Please see rules on first page!)-1973volkswagensp2.jpg

These cars were locally designed and made in Brazil from 1972 to 1975 by Volkswagen do Brasil, .

In the early 70s, despite its military regime, Brazil witnessed a time of economic prosperity - the so-called milagre brasileiro (Brazilian miracle). The middle class consumer bought more and auto-sales grew.

The 65 bhp SP (for São Paulo), and its more successful successor, Brazil's Volkswagen SP2, were built on
VW's Type 4 (411) Variant estate car platform.

The VW air cooled flat-four boxer was grown to 1700 cc. With a compression ratio of 7.5:1 -- the highest so far for aircooled VW engines -- fuel recommended was Brazil's high octane "blue" petrol. The SP2 had the same 4-speed gearbox but a taller 3.88:1 final drive ratio.

The engine buzzed out 75 bhp @ 5000 rpm which could coax 160 km/h out of the aerodynamic body.
However 17.4 seconds for 0 to 100 km/h acceleration, was sadly not performance to match the looks!

The little coupe flogged the old rear swing-axle suspension and 14-inch steel wheels shod with 185/80R14s and front disc brakes and rear drums.

The low volume production run: 10,205 units over three years drove the costs too high to sustain.

ID:619 is a Zundapp Janus
My First ID here !

Named Janus after the Roman God with two faces, one which looks forward , and one which looks backward.
Since the front and rear were identical, the same sheetmetal could be used to assemble the front and back
apparently, the rear passengers sat facing the back, and the engine mounted exactly in the centre

ID:1957 Zündapp Janus 750

Yes greenhorn congratulations!

ID:619 is indeed a 1957 Zündapp Janus 750 "coming or going" car.

Official Guess the car Thread (Please see rules on first page!)-1957zndappjanus750.jpg

The mid-mounted engine was a motorcycle type single cylinder two-stroke 250 cc Bella scooter engine like what we had on our Ideal Jawa/Yezdi motorcycles. The engine developed 14 bhp and the car could manage 80 km/h.
The little car had no side doors. Only one door in the front and one door in the back.

In late 1954 the entire motorcycle industry was in recession, as the two-wheeler was no longer perceived a means of transport. Consumers wanted refined weatherproof transportation.

Zündapp got their front/rear-facing prototype from Dornier and named it Janus for the Roman god who faced both ways.

However the rear-facing rear seats proved unsatisfactory. People don't like to travel backwards watching the retreating landscape in the rain.

Production shut down after putting out 6,902 cars in a 17-month production run Jun. 1957 to Oct. 1958.

ID:620; 1959 Vespa 400

No agspins, it is not the Fiat 500 based Autobianchi Bianchina.
On the contrary by 1961, this car was just about discontinued.

ID:620 is a 1959 Vespa 400.
A 375 kg microcar, it was powered by a two-cylinder, two-stroke 393 cc 14 bhp engine mounted in the rear of the car.

Although Vespa was an Italian brand owned by Piaggio, they licensed production of their little microcar out of Italy and to their scooter licensee:Ateliers de Constructions de Motos et Accessoires (ACMA) at Fourchambault on the east bank of the river Loire in France.

This was ostensibly done in deference to Gianni Agnelli, head of Fiat, whose Fiat 500 might have choked on the competition. Can our people wanting to throw a Chinese competitor at the Tata Nano, learn a lesson in patriotic restraint?

The Vespa 400 debuted at the 1957 Paris Salon. Over 12,000 copies were built until end-1960.
